Building through the draft
-
There's a lot of high priced free agents out there. When a player reaches his prime it's all about the big pay day. Revis just signed a huge contract. His third in as many years. The Browns should fill their needs through the draft. Last year the Raiders signed a ton of free agents and so did the Bucaneers.
They gotta stop trading away their picks and learn how to draft!
-
Building through the draft is a fine concept......but when you draft those players who then leave right when they are hitting their prime it sort of undermines the whole concept, no?
I mean, we are losing the likes of Cameron, Sheard, Skrine, maybe some others. Guys we drafted what? No more than 5 years ago?
So....build through the draft and just when these players are starting to get good let them go elsewhere?
It is possible that it is not a function of this team wanting to build through the draft....but a function of wanting to build through THEIR drafts.....and the drafts that were conducted before they got here be damned. I guess that happens a lot. A lot of these pro personell guys and coaches are loyal to the people they have chosen, and are not loyal to people already on their team.
And so far the building through the draft....under Ray Farmer has garnered us Justin Gilbert and Johnny Manziel in the first round....those have sucked so far, and it has gotten us some decent later rounders: Bitonio/West/Desir...maybe/Kirksey.
OK, you have 10 picks.....I expect 3-4 Pro Bowlers to come from these 10 picks.
-
As I see it, the Browns are on the RIGHT TRACK. Building through the draft requires
drafting players who love the game, and fit your locker room.
Otherwise, they are in it for only the money, and they'll bail at the first chance to go
and make more.
Some players want to stay where they are, pay them fairly, and you build a team.
Players who love the game want to win. I'm pretty sure that there has never been a mock draft
that was accurate around here, ever. It isn't all that easy. But at least I finally have a ton of respect
for the Browns coaches and FO to start heading for the playoffs, and I won't be surprised if those
playoffs happen for the Browns this next season. It's great to add a few FA's here and there along the way, sure.
-
There's no other option to the draft to building a team. The cap sees to that.
The draft is the only place you can accumulate enough affordable, quality players to be competitive year after year. As holes become apparent you temporarily plug them with quality FAs.
This is especially true once you have your franchise QB, who you must pay and retain for his useful life.

I'm not sure I have a clue what you are talking about.
I think the point I am making is that building through the draft is fine......but we keep "rebuilding" through the draft. We often do not allow the concrete to settle before tearing down and starting over.

it's not to say that at all, but if all you've got is to come on here and bitch then what good are you? is there anything positive about this org that you'd like to talk about? cuz if there is i haven't seen it in as long as you've been here.
you want to be a fan, fine. i don't care what kind of fan. but please can you whiners just stop whining or drink some wine or something because you're unbearable.
sammy watkins, twatwatter, farmer texting, haslam corrupt, blah blah blah blah blah.
you want to yap your negativity so much do us all a favor and take it somewhere else.........pleez. or better yet save up your money from your paper route so one day you can buy a team and do what you want with it. then my grandchildren's kids can go to your team's forum and bitch about how bad you suck.
buster.

Humor, baby ! Kick ass humor!
We're Browns fans, we need that more around here.
That, and a great draft.
I believe Canton Mike and I will be going to the draft party again...
Anybody else planning to go?
-
If that is the Browns' plan, then I like the fact that we actually have a plan. Past regimes seemed to be just shooting in the dark, signing people just to sign them and taking too many risks in the draft (not that we didn't last year with Manziel). Having a plan is important.
Not sure I'd agree with that completely. We've drafted and signed UDFAs recently who have turned out pretty good. Examples are:
Crowell, West, Gabriel, Bitonio, and K.Williams, and we'll see about Kirksey, and Desir who have shown flashes. Not to mention, we are still developing Manziel and Gilbert which may still turn out ok. We've also continued to develop young players from the past regimes like Gipson, A.Bryant, Hughes & Winn, Mingo, and Schwartz.
That's 15 young players that seem like they will have prominent roles in 2015. Couple them with vets like Thomas, Haden, and Mack and I'd say our offseason moves via the draft, re-signing our own players, and UDFA have been pretty good recently.
I think you're referring to past regimes, which is unfair to our current group. Farmer and Pettine have only had 1 season, while Haslam has only had 2. Our "draft history" and "lack of development" are irrelevant right now until this group has a chance to prove their worth. So far, in one offseason I'd say they've shown they can build a good team... they just need to find a QB to steer the ship, which is not an easy task by any means...
Right. I just don't understand the failure of some to recognize how much this regime has accomplished in such a short time. They have worked with a passion that had been missing in Cleveland for FAR too many years.
I'm having a great time watching their plan unfold.
Mike

obviously you don't stalk very well as you have plainly made it seem. as far as Sammy walk and goes I was happy either way draft him I'm happy the trade I was happy with so there you're wrong. truly easy to make your point when you're putting words in people's mouths isn't it? we have an owner that I'm happy to see here more than the old one but his president general manager and coaches rolodex is growing too fast for my liking. bottom line is everybody has an opinion and some people's opinions change but just because someone doesn't see eye to eye on what you think does it mean everybody's a troll or a bitch. I am happy with the Brian Hartline move. what you expect everybody to blindly cheer the Browns when we sign a garbage quarterback and call it an upgrade and dangle all of our young talent that we found out for the possibility of getting snatched up. good teams take care of their own draft well and sprinkle in a few free agents every year. my biggest gripe is this team is putting themselves in the position to dangerously hit the reset button again and after the first half of last year nobody should be thinking that way but you're a fool if you don't. so I'm telling you quit being a bitch and act like you're dissecting everybodies posts and topics. I bet you're the type of guy that has blindly cheered on every Regime until the day they left the Browns organization. I'll stop right there and let you continue beating your chest it's what you're good at
-
obviously you're new here considering i was the biggest whiner and bitch when it came to holmgren...and no i don't dissect everyone's posts.
do what you want. be the biggest guy one way or the other. i'm just telling you from experience it does get old. i've battled toe to toe with half the people here and learned that in the end what does it really matter?
when the browns mean more to anyone here than supporting your family, paying your bills, fixing your roof etc. etc. then there's a problem.
my point is unless you have all the money in the world and happy as a pig in shit why compound everyday probs by coming here to complain (whine)? and that might be taking it too far but wouldn't it be nice to see the positives? sure there are things that i don't like about this new regime, players that i find mediocre but i'm not going to constantly post in some smarmy 'they suck' attitude with every given subject like some people like to do.
my schtick might be old but i keep it current.
to each his own. i just thought you were a different person when commenting on the game in the tavern. a big 180 i see.
-
well the loss of an all-pro center and half the DL through those games might lead you to think that way but just because we're not jumping at every FA doesn't mean this team sucks.
i think we should all give these guys a chance to do their jobs.
if farmer produces like he did last year in the draft i'll be happy, if he throws up bricks and because of it the team goes 4 and 12 i'll be right here complaining along side of you. (highly doubt it tho).
-
I don't want the Browns to send money just to spend money but I would have liked to hear them mentioned with Jerry Hughes, Terrance Knighton or a Julius Thomas.
Seeing names like Hartline is disheartening.

Ahh building through the draft! We have been so good at doing that right? No.
2001- Passed on LaDainian Tomlinson for Gerard Warren
2002- Passed on Ed Reed for William Green
2004- Passed on Ben Rapistburger for Kellen WinSLOW
2005- Passed on Aaron Rodgers, DeMarcus Ware, Shawne Merriman for Braylon "Mr.Drops" Edwards
2007- Passed Adrian Peterson for Joe Thomas ( If we take Peterson first, then a very good Joe Staley is availible instead of Quinn )
These ones were the worst that I found, I know the last one won't be popular but Joe Staley is still a 4x Pro bowler so he is still a better then average OT.
-
Its not just the drafting of good players...its developing them. We dont develop players well.

I don't know if I can even agree with that, we are constantly changing front offices, and schemes. Hard to develop guys when they are constantly learning, and having coaches who didn't draft or sign them coming in making changes. Consistency is a good thing in most cases.
-
Andre Johnson taking less money to go to the Colts. He must of plain blocked Brown's number on his phone. Or I can see after he refused SD money and was laughing about him and his agert just plunked um. Mean while the Brown's call and both of em get into that laughing situation and neither one can even breathe.
-
Why would Andre Johnson want to come here? He's coming to the end of a great career that he wants to end with a ring. We need to accept we aren't there yet. Draft and build well and one day we might. Until then, expensive free agents are pointless in cleveland especially veteran ones.
