How many teams passed on Aaron Rodgers again. . .

And how many Aaron Rodgers are there in the league? QBs that fell and are elite - Rodgers, Wilson, Brady. Three from the last 15 years? Compare and contrast with QBs taken high that have busted.

I know but just because teams pass doesn't mean we should

the QB play IS the biggest difference between the browns and our rivals in the division. i just wouldn't give away anything to pick one in the draft this year. after winston and mariota there still are a couple of gems that could be had in the second and early third who would come in and prob knock our 2nd and 3rd down a notch.

My stance too, no trading up but if Mariota falls to 12, you take him.

Im still counting on the Browns to have the inside track(scoop) on Mariota simply because our QB coach is the one who just trained him for the combine....

If they take him or if they pass.....Im guessing he knows Mariota better than anyone on the other teams......

I think that's only partly correct - it's the wr's that are the biggest difference.

Look at the ratbirds, bungles and squealers - wr's. te's. Gordon, when on the field,

got open and rumbled. Hawkins can get open. Without them, the Browns can't work on offense.

My guess is, if Mariotta falls to the Browns. you take him. He has the character,

outstanding physical skills, love for the game, very smart, work ethic, tough...

maybe a bit quiet right now....

Having to choose between Shelton and Mariotta would give me a headache.

It's so much easier to sit back at the Browns' draft party and watch it all take place. That is fun!

    Agree... that's a tough decision. A 50/50(?) franchise QB vs. a 90/10 NT.

But we can't stand pat. Have to bring in fresh, QB blood. If that prospect is Mariota, so be it, go get him... otherwise try Hundley or Petty, but I cannot see standing pat as an option.

Consider either putting Johnny on the non-football injury list or try to get Shaw back on the PS, but somehow make room for a new prospect.

  • If we are going to trade for Mariota, then JF needs to be traded right now. If not, the dude needs full support of the coaching staff for OTA's. I am not saying that JF is the answer, but he needs a fair shot. I still think we should draft Petty, but thats just me.

If i never see Johnny again, it will be too soon!!! Seen enough of him to realize he will never be a QB in this league. And btw, he might indeed have a problem, but he was there the entire time that Hoyer was throwing the ball. So no excuse for him not learning anything.

believe me i have the same train of thought BUT maybe the kid just thought shit would be handed to him, partying or not?

he has athletic ability and he won games in the toughest NCAA conf so if he wants to give it a run saying that he's there now and ready to compete then i say let him. whether he breaks the plane of NFL starting caliber QB or not is up to him and his body.

If they were both there at 12, I'd draft Mariota then trade 19 & our 2nd to the Saints to move up to 13 and take Shelton...

Getting both of them would be worth those 3 picks... IMHO

I wouldn't constitute Wilson or Brady as a "fall". Neither of them were projected to be top picks to begin with, they were drafted right around where they were projected.

Recent quarterbacks in the Aaron Rodgers-level fall class:

    • Brady Quinn
    • Johnny Manziel
    • Teddy Twatwater
    • Geno Smith
    • Tim Tebow (kind of, but not really. Gruden, Dungy, et al loved him in the top ten, but Kiper had him as a mid round guy.)
    • Jay Cutler
    • Ben Roethlisberger (kind of)
    • Kyle Boller
    • Drew Brees

None of these guys experienced the dramatic fall that Rodgers did, as none were really considered to be top prospects. However, most of the aforementioned guys were tossed around as being at the top of their class and were drafted below their projected position based on different criteria.

For Brees and Manziel, it was due to their physical limitations. For Roethlisberger, it was due to the level of competition. Smith and Quinn were vanilla prospects, in my eyes. Cutler and Boller were physical freaks that fell based on scheme transition doubts.

I think Boller is the prime example of what Aaron Rodgers could have been, and vice versa. They are two sides of the same coin. Rodgers is the prime example of taking a supremely athletic, slightly raw talent and letting him sit while Boller is the prime example of taking a supremely athletic, raw talent and forcing him to be your franchise savior. Boller put up some decently solid stats and put together more than a few good games, but ultimately he fizzled out because the pressure was too great.

Mariota is at a crossroads, and his fate may not be entirely in his hands. Try as he might, there is only so much that pure athletic talent can do to overcome a poor overall offense. If he falls to us at 12 and we throw him into the fire, we're likely going to get a Kyle Boller-esque performance. If we take him at 12 and let him sit, I think we could have ourselves a top-level franchise quarterback.

    But then...there's Manziel...

Mariota is not the answer. He was not accurate enough to start day1 this fall, let alone be worth multiple draft picks, when put under actual pressure from OSU in the title game. Cardale Jones was the best QB on the field that day.

Could he make the leap and become a viable starter? Sure.. if anyone could, he could. But it's not guaranteed. Just look at the Dolphins right now.. Tannehill is in the conversation of the t12 QB's after 3 years.. and they aren't certain he's worth resigning.

Here's where the author got his info for this article.....took me about 2 seconds to find the source(and disprove) this one.....

If anything Mariota is not ready to start day 1. We saw first hand what Johnny Football did- even after sitting for the better part of a year.

& if we're going to "Play like Clowns" with McCown- May as well "Fail for Cardale".

Gosh taking Mariota would be so unbelievably stupid. It's like all these Ohio State fans didn't even watch the NC game.

  • if mariota falls to 12 you take him. period.

no, he's not a sure-fire no question solid #1 like luck but he could grow to be better than luck.

besides if he's there at 12 that means you can still get great players at 19 and 43.

mariota is a better pick this year than manziel was last.

    sorry AG.

I've heard it all now. This is absurd.

You guys do realize Chip Kelly wanted Johnny over Mariota at Oregon right? The guy is taller and has his head on straighter, whoop-de-frickin-do. Still a spread quarterback with a million question marks.

We got McCown for a reason. Let's stick to the plan.

So Mariota's not the guy, but if anyone in this draft can become the guy, then he's the guy? But we should not go after him. That about it?

Guaranteed guys are extremely rare and virtually no picks for them become available. Even Elway was taken by the team he would not play for and then was traded...

Miami gambled big time reaching for a QB with only two years of college QB-ing experience... and right now their gamble is looking pretty damn good. Tannehill's season-to-season improvement has been steady for three years. If he can maintain or improve on his 2014 performance, then the Fins are going to clear cap space and back up the truck to be sure he's there for the remainder of the decade... at minimum.

  • W wargograw wrote on last edited by

Tannehill was always a QB. This is one of the biggest misconceptions in the NFL. He played QB art through grade school, he was recruited as a quarterback, he played quarterback exclusively throughout his redshirt year and even when he did play receiver, he was still cross-training at QB and had the sole right to the backup job.

Miami would also be plain fools not to resign him.

You got it. Been saying it for a while. Box in pick 12 with pick 11 or pick 13. The Talent will be There may not be Shelton Nor Mariota. Screw the value to move up charts. Just don't see the price to be right to get there IMO..
