Sean Jones in Philly Green?

He got a 1 year deal from Philly, who needs to replace Dawkins. Doesn't that tell you anything?
Yes, it does.
It tells me, unlike us, Philly is willing to take a 1-year gamble on a good (when healthy) safety who will be, at worst, a stopgap until they draft someone better than we'll draft to replace him b/c they are way smarter than we are.
We know what we get with Jones. When healthy, he's a good safety, and it isn't like we have any viable solutions at that position to let him walk. We blew it, big time, with this one IMO. End of story.

End of story.1) he wasn't getting multi-year deals for a reason (i.e he is average at best) and 2) he FOR DAMN SURE wasn't taking a 1 year deal from us, so not sure what we "blew."
Relax, we didn't blow anything. He is a very mediocre safety, not an elite pass rusher. Having him back there the last two seasons, I am not sure just what you think we're going to be missing. If he is your favorite Brown I am sorry we traded away your buddy. He is far from being some irreplacable cog in the machine, that's for damn sure. And not a leader like a safety should be. Average, at best.

XXXXX ranks third among safeties behind Baltimore's Ed Reed and St. Louis' Oshiomogho Atogwe with 14 interceptions since 2006. He had four picks in XXXXX's final six games last season. XXXXX missed four games after having surgery on his right knee, but played the last 11.
The 27-year-old XXXXX has recorded 286 tackles and three forced fumbles in 60 games, including 44 starts. XXXXX, listed at 6-foot-1 and 225 pounds, had his best season in '06 when he finished with 107 1/2 tackles and five interceptions.

Leave the man-love to the mouth-breathers. I just want to field the best team possible.

Vegas, are you saying that you are content with Adams taking his place? I know Im not...I saw enough of Adams when he had to start to know he isnt going to cut it. I still think that Jones was a good safety and is still young enough to help this club out. I really did think we would bring him back. I hope Mangini knows what he is doing...RAC thought he did too a few years back. Mangini is on the clock, hope he finds all the pieces he's looking for before the alarm goes off.

Says something when he has to go shop himself for only a one year contract. Most believe he is damaged goods. Could be why Philly would only give him a 1 year contract.

What don't you understand about him being damaged goods. He couldn't get a multi year contract as a UFA. He got a 1 year tryout with Philly.
Adams isn't taking his place, he is a backup. There's a reason you get draft picks and that's to draft players you need to fill vacancies.
Man, lighten up...............we didn't lose shit.

That, or it could be that Jones believes he's an elite safety whose contract year was wrecked by a knee injury. A one year "prove it" deal with a good defensive team looks to be the best way for him to earn that elite money.

Clayton believe he's thinking one big year in Philly will give him a big pay day the following year

I also read an article that said his knee isn't good will become a cronic problem. He may never regain the speed and agility he had when he returned from his original surgery.

This furthers my suspicions that we are drafting Moore with one of our second rounders
HOPEFULLY we ca scheme a way into getting another late/mid first rounder
I can see our draft going something like this (if we can scheme a late 1st)
1. Orakpo
2.Maualuga
3.Rashad Jennings
4. William Moore

And why do you think he is signing a 1 yr "prove it deal?" What does he have to prove? You don't think he has much to prove, but I am of the opinion that while he may be the best we have, that isn't saying much - at all!
Jones was a favorite of mine, but he never made much happen in Cleveland on this defense. There is not one player - besides MAYBE Rogers - that I would be heartbroken we lost, and Jones is at the top.
1 yr deal for a Safety his age? Dude, come on back down to earth. Just because he is better than Adams and Pool does not mean we handcuff ourselves to a huge contract.

A one year "prove it" deal with a good defensive team looks to be the best way for him to earn that elite money.Jones has been an enigma for me. I was so pissed when he got hurt in rookie camp and blew out his knee. There were also rumblings that before he got hurt he didn't look very good, so my immediate reaction was that Butchie blew our second rounder on another guy he was in love with.
Once he got his knee underneath him he really showed he could play, much like Edwards. In his breakout season I was convinced he was going to be an elite safety for years, but I really don't think he has ever completely been healthy and his knee continues to dog him.
The Browns knew this last year and his play was the worst since he came into the league. It was obvious he wasn't 100% and it killed him knowing it was a contract year. Jones is an elite athlete, as I've had the pleasure of watching him up close and comfy at camp. He is of the Winslow/Edwards type of being phenomenally skilled with the requisite instincts, and by most accounts a good guy.
I had counted on him to be a core star/superstar type player for us and a major contributor to Pool's growth, but I firmly believe his knee has held him back from ever reaching his true potential.
This was a good move by the Browns to move on IMO. I think Jones may believe his knee will be fine, but in truth he's in worse shape than he thinks. I wish him no ill will, and he's not in our conference anymore. It's possible he does have a big season this year and gets his multi year deal, but the Browns are much better off building the future back there than possibly overpaying for a guy like Jones who can go down at any time.
Face it folks, this team is moving on. I'm hoping Edwards and DA are next. BTW, what is the one thing Winslow, Edwards and Jones all have in common?
Knee reconstructions

I remember hearing that Georgia's coaching staff told Savage to be patient with Jones. They told him that it took Jones a full two years to adjust to playing safety (he was a QB in high school). And when Grantham was fired, we were told that Jones didn't respond well to Grantham barking at him whenever he made a mistake.
That leads me to believe that coachability may be a factor, along with the durability/knee issues. I still would have liked to see us re-sign him, but I understand why the new regime wouldn't be willing to give him the type of money he was asking for.
As mz the pussy & JD have pointed out, this year's safety class kinda sucks, whereas next year's looks to be phenomenal. With that in mind, I'm beginning to wonder whether we should have transition or franchise tagged Jones. Sure, we would have overpaid him, but we'd be put in a position where we'd either have Jones return to borderline-elite form or we'd have him off the books when we take one of the elite safeties in next year's draft.

WTF has this guy been doing to make you think he is worth a tag? The guy was okay, but his playmaking has been fleeting. The guy HAD promise, but not anymore. You want to give this kid $6M on a "chance" he'll be borderline elite, when he never has been elite before?
I don't get what you guys think of him. What plays stand out? What games did he put together that changed the scheme of things? He is a mediocre safety - at BEST. And not fully recovered from a knee injury.
Mah, no loss. We need pressure up front. Jones hung plenty a CB out to dry in his years here.

Jones throws a beautiful ball in practice, Alo, so I figured he probably played some QB at some point. Winslow does too, but he never played QB.
I get your point, but I think when you're cleaning house, it's best to move on as much as possible so you know what's in front of you. I just don't see how you can spend that much cash on a guy who has major knee issues.

Ed Reed had 22 INT's in the same time span. He is not worth what he was asking from the Browns, and then when he went to the open market he got ONLY a 1 year deal!!!!!. Seems the rest of the league - and ME - know better than you.
Our problems are not at safety, so why in the world you want to shell out bank to a mediocre Safety with no game changing ability I will never know.
You seem to be one to hold onto losing propositions a lot on this board. Lets just say you and I have beat this to its death and move on. You bore me.
