JaMarcus Winston

I had this discussion with my friends during the draft. I thought it would have been one of the greatest uses of an ESPN film crew if Jameis had his draft party in the frozen food section of a Publix.
I'm glad to see he had a similar thought. I think he'll be just fine.

Well, TC... you are 2 for 2 picking top QBs (Bortles and Winston)... 3 for 3 counting Luck, but that was too easy.
So who's next?

I may willingly withdraw from predicting the top QB this year due to my intense homerism for Cardale Jones.
However, Connor Cook is very, very, very intriguing as well. As is Trevone Boykin.

i'm just wondering who paid for winston's red carpet event since he hasn't received any money yet (wink, wink).

I like the leadership qualities, determination and grit that Petty has, I like the intelligence, poise and athletic ability that Hundley has, and I like the measurements and pro-style experience of Grayson. Put together, they are the perfect NFL QB. Apart...I'd take Petty first, then Hundley, then Grayson.
Connor Cook might be that perfect package of all three of those guys, though.
Pros
-6'5"
-220 lbs.
-4.6 40 yard dash
-5th year redshirt senior
-Runs a pro-style offense
-Smart
-NFL caliber arm.
-NFL caliber decision making
-Short memory
-Competitive
-Driven to complete what he's started
-Often makes crazy accurate throws through tight windows
-Seems to exemplify the "Play Like A Brown" mantra
Cons
- needs to shore up his footwork
- wiry body frame, could stand to gain 10-15 pounds
What I like about Cook is that he has glowing reviews from nearly everyone he's worked with. Add to that the fact that he has spent offseasons training with QB guru George Whitfield and with Prolific Athletes in California (where Luck, Newton, Winston, Manziel, Petty and Mariota trained). He has the measurements of a #1 overall pick, he has the experience of a #1 overall pick, he has the record of a #1 overall pick, and he seems to train like a #1 overall pick. My bet is on him as it stands right now.
Quick hits -
From George Whitfield:
"He’s as competitive a guy as some of the ones we’ve seen down here with Newton and Manziel, some small things you get a chance to see in term of temperament. Every minute he’s been here he’s had on green and white, like he’s down to the book bag to the socks, he’s so proud to be a Spartan and even some of the other guys smile when he comes up because he has all this Michigan State stuff on; I think it’s great when guys love their place that much."
From Mark Dantonio:
"Connor is in his fifth year as quarterback, so he's a guy that has a lot of reps. He knows our system inside and out, and he could really coach it. Everyone senses a calm in the huddle, and he can push people forward, as well.''
From Cook:
"Coach D [Mark Dantonio] talks about completing your circles. On our Rose Bowl rings it reads, 'Complete your circles.' I want to finish what I started and play my senior year. There's some unfinished business I want to accomplish -- beat Michigan again, play for another Big Ten championship hopefully and obviously make the College Football Playoff. I couldn't do any of that stuff if I left."

I hated Jameis originally but once he became the public's whipping boy for irrational reasons, I started to like him a lot. He cracks me up.

Watched a couple of Cook's games last year... Oregon, tOSU and Baylor. First look of the year vs. Oregon he absolutely wowed me... for about a Qtr-and-a-half. Then even as a disinterested party, it felt like I was on a roller coaster. Even vs. tOSU where he did not throw a pick his game was erratic.
Really has to tighten up...

Yeah, that's what I'm hoping this year is for. He gives off the vibe of a guy who is trying too hard to play perfectly. Sometimes you have to go out and sling it - and when he slings it, he looks great.
His lower body mechanics are a work in progress. I think the weakest part of his game are those 3-step and flip and fire plays, he's almost like a young Great Dane that doesn't quite know what to do with his legs. However, literally every other part of his game is essentially right where you'd want a prospect.
I look at his game against tOSU as a preview of what his rookie season in the NFL would be if he came out this year. He would have cobbled together a mildly strong, yet wholly boring performance. He wouldn't have given off the vibe that he was overwhelmed, but he also wouldn't have taken hold of the game and put together some truly jaw-dropping performances right off the bat.
Cook, right now, is what I'd call Diet Andrew Luck. He's a shade thinner than Luck, a shade slower, a shade less polished, and a shade less strong....but only a shade. You can tell he's not the same as the real thing, but just barely.

Surprised Goodell didn't call him Jamarcus Winston when he announced the Bucs pick

Pretty typical.
i don't think i can remember seeing anything like what he 'threw' last night (and that's not a knock on him). usually if they're not at the draft they're either in their living room with friends and family or out fishing like j. thomas.
a red carpet, everyone dressed to the t....i'm sure even deion sanders would be proud.
