All you need to do is look at the players KC drafted when Farmer and Kuharic were part of that front office. They know how to scout and draft. In a few years we will be calling this the best Browns draft since they returned.

Everyone loves to just oversimplify. Draft a QB everyone says. Well, if you draft a talented QB without a solid team around him he is going to fail (ex: Tim Couch). There was no QB in this draft that we could get that without mortgaging the future that wouldn't have been a project. Would I have liked to see a WR and TE added third round or better? Sure, but only if the value makes sense.

Jacksonville nailed it for me, quality starters in all positions.

While Kiper is a homer about Baltimore's draft....and his love for Maxx Williams, I will say that both Balt and Pitt did have good drafts. Here are the teams that scored the best in my opinion, no order:

    Cleveland

    Jacksonville

    Oakland

    Baltimore

    Pittsburgh

    Tampa Bay

You don't think NYJ did good?

    I wanted Darren Waller.

Coates is going to be our 5th receiver. He's an athletic freak of nature and his catching will improve. Its also not going to be Coates giving teams fits but instead martavis Bryant who Coates is pretty much a clone.

You call every person that is on the Steelers roster "an athletic freak of nature". Quit being so cliche. I mean, Andre the Giant was an athletic freak of nature. Manute Bol was an athletic freak of nature. This guy is not. He is no more of an athletic freak of nature than any of the WRs taken before him. Just say what he is: a good athlete with potential.

CBS thinks the Browns did even better:

    Cleveland Browns
For a team with a lot of needs, the Browns added a lot of pieces to their roster with 12 draft picks over the last three days. After temptation to possibly package picks for Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota, Cleveland hoarded picks and ended up with 12 selections, including two “safe” players in the first round with nose tackle Danny Shelton and offensive lineman Cameron Erving. The Browns were very active with Pac-12 players (58-percent of their draft class) with Shelton, Utah pass rusher Nate Orchard, Washington State defensive tackle Xavier Cooper, Washington State wide receiver Vince Mayle, USC tight end Randall Telfer, USC linebacker Hayes Pullard and Oregon cornerback Ifo Ekpre-Olomu. That final pick is tremendous value for a first round player who is coming off a knee injury and likely needs a redshirt season as a NFL rookie. The Browns wound up with eight players who were on my final top-100 draft board.

Its not my label alone. The media has given both players that label. Dupree is 270 pounds and has a 42 inch vertical and runs a 4.5.

By certain measures the Browns may have made a slam dunk in this year's draft. Per SBNation the Browns picked up 7 of the top 100 available players to be drafted. Here is who they got and where they ranked as prospects:

    #14 Danny Shelton

    #51 Cameron Erving

    #68 Nate Orchard

    #69 Hayes Pullard

    #74 Duke Johnson

    #79 Xavier Cooper

    #87 Ifo Ekpr-Olamu

So...in about 20 years this years Browns draft may match that of the 1974 Steelers, no? 4 Hall of Famers?

Shelton can be our Mean Joe Greene. Pullard our Jack Lambert, Olamu our Mel Blount, Erving our Mike Webster, Orchard our Jack Ham, Johnson our Franco Harris.

Some guys like Mel Kiper underrated the Browns draft because "they didn't get the top notch WR or QB" that they think we need. Well, maybe we do need those.....but that is NOT the way to grade a draft. You grade a draft by figuring out who got the most best players....not by assessing whether or not a team did or did not get one player at a need position. If we have 5-6 Pro Bowl type players come out of this draft does it matter that one of them is not a WR or QB? No.

And of course Kiper....who I never thought was such a Baltimore homer.....really is. He said the Ravens had the best draft in the league. Well, no. I think the Ravens had a good draft....but not the best.

I disagree. You don't rank a team's draft by how many of the top 100 they got, you rank it by whether or not they improved their team.

It's fantastic that we got (seemingly) quality players, but it's all for naught if none of them actually contribute whatsoever. Then our draft would have been an F.

It's fair that we got the grade we did. Yes, we may have gotten a few steals, but our pre-draft areas of need (according to pundits) were QB and WR, which we did not address. Regardless of what we did at other positions, we did not improve in those positions - therefore our B grade.

The draft is about making your team better - not about drafting more highly ranked guys than anyone else.

Our biggest need...outside of a quality QB. No QB to be had, so go with the other two.

I'm with you on the qb. Sure, we could have taken Petty- high character guy- but very much a project. Mariota would have cost us 3 first round picks. I'll take Shelton, Erving, and whoever we draft in the first round next year instead- easy. Apparently teams learned not to repeat the RG III fiasco.

They thought our biggest needs were QB and WR, we didn't address them early enough (according to them) - hence the B grade.

My point: drafting a Petty or Hundley would NOT under any circumstances have increased that "grade". They are bigger projects, bigger question marks than any of the players we may have taken in their stead. They are bigger projects, bigger question marks than Johnny Manziel.

The way to improve is to get better players, better depth of players. This I believe the Browns have done. Gotten better....not gotten just more questionable.

If they had gone and got a Winston or Mariota, then maybe it could be said things were different....but those guys were not "gettable", not at a price that I.....or the Browns were willing to pay.

And as for WR....the Browns addressed with two proven Veterans. (This is where Kiper was off on his comments.....He gave the Seahawks a high draft evaluation because they traded for Jimmy Graham. While I understand that....I think you also have to apply that to the FA market.) Plus, the Browns did draft a highly regarded WR.

  • Tour2maT Tour2ma wrote on last edited by Tour2ma

And pretty sure TCPO's point was that even drafting Petty would have raised our grades in the estimation of some draft analysts...

And since some specifically mention Petty, e.g., Kiper, that point is undeniable.

Whether it matters or not... different debate.

i hear you all about QB and WR.

BUT if you have studied farmer and pettine at all in these first 2 years then you have to believe and know that the QB and WR will come when the whole team is built.

who cares what grades the draft gets. anyone that knows what the browns needed to do priority-wise know that they hit on every mark.

mccown will be the starter and hopefully bridge the gap until manziel or whoever else comes in next year to become a competitor at that spot. WR.....they signed bowe and have a decent corp that didn't hurt us last year.

if 50% of the picks work out this year and the FO feels they have filled the holes and added depth who's to think they don't draft offensive weapons next year?

I am willing to bet almost anything McCown will NOT be the starter.

They are going all in on Manziel this year. They burnt a 1st and a 3rd on him so they will play him

All of this Pettine talk is to make sure Manziel knows he has to earn it and bust his ass this offseason.

This team may not go anywhere with Manziel, but isn't going ANYWHERE with McCown

That is the way many teams were built.....including the Patriots. When Tom Brady came in to relieve an injured Drew Bledsoe...do you think that team went on to win the SB solely on the strength of the new QB behind center? Well, it helped....but it would not have mattered if the rest of the team were shite. The same with the Steelers in the mid 2000s. Do you think that the Steelers went 15-1 in BRs rookie year and won the SB on the strength of just the below average at the time Ben Roethlisberger? Fuck no. It was the strength of each of those teams O Lines, D Lines, running game etc. that allowed them to highly succeed once they got the right pilot in control. This, I believe, is what the Browns are doing.

who cares what grades the draft gets. anyone that knows what the browns needed to do priority-wise know that they hit on every mark.

Sure, giving grades to drafts is fun for fans....but yes, meaningless. I remember that the Bengals were given this top notch grade because they picked Akili Smith. How did that work out?

With the above also must come a word of caution: the last time the Browns used this many draft picks in a single year, here is the result: 2000:

    #1 Courtney Brown

    #32 Dennis Northcutt

    #63 Travis Prentice

    #79 JaJuan Dawson

    #95 Lewis Sanders

    #110 Aaron Shea

    #130 Anthony Malbrough

    #146 Lamar Chapman

    #183 Spergon Wynn

    #206 Brad Bedell

    #207 Manuia Savea

    #209 Eric Chandler

    #225 Rashidi Barnes

Honestly except for decent contributions by Northcutt and Shea....a draft for shit.

  • Here is where CBS Sports listed our draftees on their prospect rankings:

    #10 Shelton

    #24 Erving

    #56 Johnson

    #69 Orchard

    # 79 Cooper

    #109 Olamu

    #127 Campbell

    #150 Mayle

    #162 Gaines

    #288 Pullard

    #366 Telfer

    #488 Johnson

The biggest variance of opinion is on Pullard. Injuries may have been a factor in his lower ranking here.

Now I know why I fell off the couch with the 2 back 2 back picks of TE in the 6th. We have 3 TE's add 2 more in the draft and I stated you don't draft practice squad in 6th round.. I know Telfer dropped always hurt and Johnson a TE got him rated in that positions but great minds have him Converting to a FB. If you wanted a FB Draft one that plays FB, not high on Converting..
