We would have had to keep troops there until the end of time. There was no proper way to exit. Saddam kept the country on lock for so many years by gassing people and using tactics we wouldn't do. That is the only way you could keep all of those factions under control. We would have to be there forever and put U.S. personnel at risk to try and referee fights that have gone on thousands of years.

After we had invested so much in securing that country we needed to protect our investment. We have had troops in South Korea since the end of that war and we still have troops in Germany. Keeping a residual force would have been a good investment in my opinion.

So do you realize how utterly Retarded it is to keep troops permanently stationed in places? Is North Korea not still major asshole? So maybe our interference there as well did no favors to the Koreans. Germany? We're not there to keep tabs on the germans, you know that right? And being stationed in Germany is A FAR FAR FAR cry from being in the middle east. As someone already pointed out, TILL THE END OF FUCKING TIME we would have had to be there. You have to wash your hands of it at some point. It didn't work out, all there is to it.

I hope all the young kids thinking about going into the military see this shit. You're being asked to go around the world and defend so called American interests when infact you're just making shit worse. A few people make "astounding" amounts of money off the engagement and you and your buddies are left with personal lives in utter tatters. And nobody in Washington gives a fuck about you on any day of the week as well as Sunday. They talk like they do, but they don't. Military service in this country has become a farce. You're not fighting anymore for your country you're fighting for the special interests that dominate the current regime in power. This is not what the founders had in mind.

Merkel has complained about US electronic spying on Germany....

but keeping troops in Iraq or Afghanistan is pointless and a waste of lives.

both parties are too comfortable with bombing brown people as the chief foreign policy statement.

Did the South Koreans and Germans have a millennial long confrontation involving several internal factions motivated by a religion that condones murder?

wow at least one of you understands what exactly the dynamic is we're dealing with in the middle east. The Nazi's and the NKZ are comparatively speaking little French school girls compared with 1800 years of a civil fucking war where the people believe they get 75 virgins in heaven from Allah if they blow up a Mosque of the opposing sect who are also fucking muslims.

I get upset thinking about the cockstarters in this country who decided it was a good idea to hop into that regions business a century or so ago.

    1) well we spy on everyone technically. We still have bases there though for the Rooskies.

    2) Yes bombing brown people is a fav past time of ours.

  • What is wrong is to have gone to war, lost hundred of lives and thousands wounded soldiers, spent billions of dollars to secure Iraq and then just abandon everything and leave. Military commanders told Obama to leave a residual force but of course he knows more than his generals. What is happening right now is exactly what Bush said would happen if we pulled all the troops out too soon.

Bob Woodward was right about this:

"As for President Barack Obama's decision to leave no residual force behind when American troops left Iraq in December 2011, Woodward indicated it would have been better to have left 10,000-15,000 troops behind as "an insurance policy" as military commanders suggested.

"We have 30,000 troops or more in South Korea still, 65 years or so after the war," Woodward said. "When you’re a superpower, you have to buy these insurance policies, and he didn’t in this case. I don’t think you can say everything is because of that decision — but clearly a factor."

  • unaffordable to keep troops there ad infinitum. Actually quite outrageous to listen to republicans gripe that we're not spending enough money on some foreign policy sinkhole. Unreal. Everyone in business knows at some point you cut your losses. It's a sunk cost. Can't get it back no matter what you do.

No they didn't need bombed. Unless of course you by the theory that everything that happens on the planet is the business of the U.S. Which it isn't. And that thinking is why we're almost broke country now.

  • Most of them aren't as smart as Quaddafi was. At least he understood "cool your jets, asshole bombing.".

Other than that, U.S. 'Leadership" doesn't want to project a will to win. I don't want the U.S. to be the worlds police, and I have difficulty with a lot of our actions being just. It would be easier to take if we would fight to win, instead to me it seems like long wars to keep military contractors in business who then donate to politicians who then award contracts to military contractors.

I'd rather put those troops in the U.S. - Mexican border and sort that shit out then have people die piecemeal in Afghanistan - shot on purpose by our "allies" in the region.

  • You can make the argument we should have not gone to war in Iraq but after we made that decision then we should see it through. We owe that much to those who fought and secured Iraq before Obama pulled all the troops out. Iraq veterans see all these Iraqi cities fall to ISIS which they had fought already and won. If keeping a residual force there would have prevented what we see today it would have been worth it.

Biden was calling Iraq one of Obama's greatest achievements not that long ago. Once Obama pulled the troops out and the country fell apart it was back to blaming Bush and it was all Bush's fault again.

because they're idiots, we get it. You knew that was comig though. In any case, we can't have multiple administrations beholden to a previous admins mistake. It's a religious civil war that's been going on since before we were a country...almost 10 times longer than we've been a country, you get that right? You intrinsically understand this right? So the argument you're making is to throw more lives and more money at a mistake? That's the definition of stupidity.

You can talk all you want about previous lives, but what about the future lives we'd be throwing away there? Do you see the circuitous perpetuity of your standpoint? So we keep soldiers there for another 10 years and a thousand more die. In 10 years people are calling for withdrawal...well hold on a second what about the lives lost the last 10 years? It would literally never end.

Assuming you are referring to Iraq had Saddam Hussein gone ahead and started trading the world's second-largest oil reserve in Euros it would have fucked us royally. You could make a better case for allowing him to invade Kuwait.
