Donovan McNabb went to 5 NFC championship games and a Super Bowl, 6 time Pro Bowler. If a Browns QB put that type of resume up before I die I'd name my first born son after him.

Donovan McNabb is overrated.. puhleeze... He choked when it really counted.. He held on to the ball so hard when he threw it in the superbowl, all his passes fell to the ground. No thanks.

The interesting perspective has always been the question: What if the Browns had taken McNabb instead of Couch?

The answer may be: while McNabb may have gotten beaten up just as much as Couch, he may not have gotten injured the way Couch did, but he would never have had those Conf. title game and SB appearances..

Right now, McNabb is a borderline HOF candidate. My impression would be that he does NOT make it. He and Steve McNair seem similar.....and not just because they are both black and their names begin with McNa... Though, those do help in the comparison.

Both had good solid careers, played on good teams that were regular playoff participants. Both had one SB losing appearance.

In fact here are their career statistics....very similar:

Record as starter: McNabb 98-62-1, McNair 91-62

    Comp/Atts: McNabb 3170/5374 for 59.0%, McNair 2733/4544 60.1%

    Yards: McNabb 37,276 McNair 31,304

TDs: McNabb 234 (4.4% TD rate), McNair 174 (3.8% TD rate)

    Ints: McNabb 117 (2.2%), McNair 119 (2.6%)

    Rating: McNabb 85.6, McNair 82.8

    CA: McNabb 138, McNair 126

Playoff record: McNabb 9-7, McNair 5-5

So, yes a lot of similarities. and yes, alphabetically they are right next to each other of all QBs who have ever played in the NFL.

  • Way to early to make judgements yet. Lets see what happens in July and August. I hope they both light it up.

Agree... my point was that whatever you thought/ think of JM his joy of playing the game was undeniable. If he loses that, it is a cause for concern.

I agree....gotta love what you're doin to be great at it....though some do lose the love once it becomes a job and there is big pressure to perform......

It sounds like Browns have no use for unimproved Manziel
    By Justin TerranovaMay 29, 2015 | 1:32pm:
Teammates have raved about a more determined Johnny Manziel off the field, but it appears not much has changed on the field.
ESPN Cleveland reports that Manziel resembled the same quarterback who struggled mightily in two starts last season for the Browns. This is no great surprise being that it’s May and Manziel spent over 10 weeks of his offseason in rehab for an undisclosed substance. But here’s the description from ESPN’s Tony Grossi on how Manziel played this week:
‘The only day media were allowed in to view one of the three OTA practices, Manziel looked unchanged from his rookie year. He was not assertive with knowing where to go with the ball and ran too much for an OTA practice. A person who witnessed a practice after the open media session said that Manziel was worse the second day.’
More damning than Manziel’s performance on the field is the description of how the Browns are viewing his competition with Josh McCown. The veteran quarterback — with 13 years of mediocrity on his resume — provides the steadiness the Browns desire.
Cleveland and coach Mike Pettine plan to win games by running the football and depending on their defense.
“My focus is just how good can I be at decision-making,” McCown said before OTAs began. “Just holding myself to a high standard, where it never puts us in a bad situation and the defense is always playing with favorable fields. That’s what I hope people see as we move into the season.”
McCown has 61 touchdowns to 59 interceptions in his career to go along with 6.63 yards per attempt average.
Manziel doesn’t sound like the answer right now, but the solution doesn’t sound too appetizing, either.
  • What's encouraging about that?

  • It's called sarcasm

  • Well if Johnny Rehab doesn't have the tools to play QB in the NFL, he will get a pink slip before the next draft.

  • I think Johnny been banging a lot of the Browns Board members wives and girlfriends. Thats why so much hate and hope that he fails. Can't understand why a fan would want there first round pick to fail.

No one on this board wants Johnny to fail. I wish he was lighting it up right now and showing improvement. However, I am also a realist. If he is looking awful even after getting clean then he is not going to be around for long.

The coaching staff won't bet their jobs on a guy who can't learn a playbook or run an NFL offense.

I don't see constant negative articles on anyone else except Manziel. If he fails, he fails, but its still May for petes sake.

Well yeah people are going to be more negative about the guy. The team invested a first into a guy who chose to get smashed instead of learning the playbook. People are going to scrutinize the hell out of him. Deservedly so.

Plus, he's a quarterback. We will bitch and bitch about the QBs until we get the right one. Then we still bitch a little bit about him.

    They are lightning rods.

If McClown goes out and stinks it up, we will be unforgiving to him and the Farmer who rode him into town.

Yep. This article talks of the same things I was pointing to in yesterdays post.....

And, since we only carried 2 QB's last year....Im starting to wonder what happens if he doesn't earn the Back up spot. Dont see Pettine going through a whole season with a QB he doesnt have trust in,,,,and NO WAY we can hide him or Lewis on the practice squad.....which maybe means he could be gone this year if he doesnt step up and play well......

I dont see constant negative articles or anyone hoping he fails......I just see people reporting the truth and what they're observing at camp......maybe Johnny just gets all the negative attention because he does stuff to deserve it?????....and isn't playing well?......while the others show up, do their jobs and generally just play better.....

    See: Jay Cutler.

  • Way too early to write off Manziel yet. I have no doubt this year he will know the playbook very well with the work ethic he has been showing. I think he can be a good NFL quarterback with the right mental attitude. I agree with what Roger Staubach said about him being capable of being a Russell Wilson type quarterback. "'If he really truly gets his life back on track, his talent is Russell Wilson-type talent,' Staubach told USA TODAY Sports.

i didn't read any reports last year of manziel showing up to camp drunk, so how is it that he didn't learn the playbook last year? too complicated?

if someone is soooooooooooo talented a hangover or 4 beers into a binge won't make that person any less talented, hell sometimes it actually loosens people up.

i just don't see this kid as an NFL QB. sorry, not trying to rain on anyone's parade but either i'm blind or a lot of people on here are.

if this kid 'all of a sudden' flips a switch and becomes russell wilson i'll go shit in a hat. from what I saw of him on the field last to what i see of russell wilson, manziel would need a brain transplant, not just some 6 week rehab.
