Terrelle Pryor Claimed By Browns
-
That slipped my mind. Thanks for cluing me in. Forgot entirely about P.S. requirements. Strike 1 for Alzheimers.

What are the rules here?

Reminiscent of Josh Cribbs, converted QB. Bloody 'ell.....maybe Pryor can return kicks as well. (no worse than anyone else we have doing that job)
I was thinking the same.....different body types and styles.....but definitely both are guys who are extremely dangerous with the ball in their hand.....
The other similarity is we now have to create ways to do that.....because neither are/were natural receivers or RB's....
WildDawg anyone???
A lil Pryor highlight tape......he's a bad ass runner if we can get him the ball.....thats for sure...

Watching those highlights, I'm actually more excited for Pryor to win a backup QB spot than anything else.
Tell me again what attributes Manziel has that Pryor doesn't?

The Browns were clear in their press release that he has been signed as a WR, and Pryor has acknowledged his QB career is over as well.
I'm excited to see what he can do as a WR, it is no lose proposition.

I think that was the intention, absolutely.
But you're crazy to think that, if Manziel shows that he just absolutely can't grasp it, Pryor won't be taking some snaps at practice by like Week 4 or 5.
You think they'd say " Oh hey, we're gonna bring on Pryor as a possible QB, but probably a WR, and maybe a TE too." in their official press release? Press releases don't dictate depth chart, nor does a WR designation preclude him from taking practice snaps at QB. WR's and QB's have to learn the same playbook with the same reads, for the most part.
-
Man, Pryor is just one of those dudes who doesn't even look like he's running fast but just blows by people. I don't think he's going to put it all together but it would be quite interesting if he did.

While I believe he is definitely here to be a WR, I also gotta think if he makes the team he make take a few practice snaps and act as an extra emergency backup guy.....but for now, I gotta believe they will focus 100% on getting him going as a wr.....throw too much at him and he has no chance....
Last year we carried 2 QB.s and had shaw on the PS.....I suspect they're gonna carry 3 this year, but maybe having Pryor might lessen the need to do that.....??....dunno....

We do have other QBs as well besides Manziel.

Tell that to anyone in the media.
It's a battle between Thad and Shaw...and Shaw is still eligible for the PS. I think we'll try and stash Shaw and if he gets gobbled up, we'll go with Thad. If Shaw makes it through, we could cut Thad and let it ride with McCown and Manziel knowing that we have Shaw in our back pocket and Pryor as well.
The conspiracy theories are in full effect in my mind now.
How about we trade Manziel, roll with a QB corps of McCown at QB1, Pryor at WR5/QB2, Shaw at QB3, then package picks next season for Cardale (or whoever the top rated QB is).
McCown and Pryor have experience with Flip, plus the size supposedly needed to take a beating in the AFCN. Shaw has the same physical traits as Manziel.
-
Could he make the roster as a receiver and the Browns only keep two QBs thus saving us a roster spot with pryor as emergency QB? Absolutely.
If we had sugned him as a QB would he beat out Thad Lewis in a straight competition for third QB? Probably not.
I think the Browns are anxious to see what he can bring to the table as a receiver the thought of saving a roster spot as a major bonus.

Agree...but that does not mean, as I have said here and elsewhere that he could not be a specialist of sorts.
He could be an old style wingback.

If track speed was all that mattered- Reynaldo Nehemiah would be in the HOF. (for those that don't remember, he won an Olympic Gold in hurdles before he gave football a shot) I think he ran a 4.1 or something like that. Can you catch the ball, and run an accurate route? We'll see. No risk as others have said, picking him up at vet minimum.
-
Id think if his head is screwed on straight and he gives an honest effort and earns that WR spot.....they'd find as many ways to use him as possible....including a few special packages just for him, Im sure....
Im think only about 5 Wr's make the 53, so he's got a LOT of people to beat out.......Bowe, Hartline, Gabe, Hawkins &......?
Mayle HAS to be a good bet.........then Benji and the rest........

Possible....perhaps even most likely scenario: McCown starts, JMZ backs up, Shaw on PS. Pryor is WR/emergency only QB.....or as I advocate: Extra point specialist.
They probably won't do that with him....but they should.

For sure-I'm just always amazed at those guys who don't even look like they are trying but just run by everyone, almost like he's gliding out there.

Practice squad eligibility (From SB Nation)
"What makes a player eligible?Generally, teams like to keep young players on the practice squad so they can develop without taking up spots on the active roster. Undrafted rookie free-agents are popular along with late-round draft picks. A player can be eligible if he does not have an accrued season in the NFL, although the NFL has now approved a maximum of two spots on the PS for players with no more than two accrued seasons. To have an accrued season, you have to be active for at least six regular-season games. A player can also go to the practice squad with an accrued season provided they were on the 45-man active roster for less than nine-regular season games.
In addition, a player is allowed on the practice squad for two years. If a player is on the practice squad for six weeks, up from three weeks per the previous agreement, in a season, it is considered a year of PS sevice. Players are only allowed to be on a practice squad for a third year if their team keeps 53 players on the active-inactive list at all times."Clear as mud now?

Bengals aren't happy with him right now
Someone asked what Johnny brings to the table that Pryor doesn't ... well, I would start with smarts. I think JM is potentially a better NFL passer as well.

Just don't see it. Game active 5-6 WR's= Bowe, Hawk, Hartline and Gabe locks with non-injuries. Push Mayle to PS??(our rookies protected?), Leaves Benji, M. Moore, Wynn (PS?), Smith and Lenz and 2 hopes Jennings and Cone and than Pryor who has never ran a NFL Route if WR is it? I like Bowe, Hawk, Hart, Gabe, Mayle or Benji 5th Active.

Didn't basically everyone just run Manziel through the wringer for being "stupid"? It's certainly different to see someone here say the words "Manziel" and "smarts" in the same sentence...even if it isn't true.
I wouldn't consider posting short video clips of OTA drills to be stupid, I'd consider it to be a lapse in judgment and an overreaction by whatever "team source" was quoted in the article (read: an equipment manager).
I don't think there is evidence of either of those that you claim. Pryor's NFL stats are bad, but Manziel's are worse. Pryor's off-field choice to tweet those videos was stupid, but Manziel has made monumentally worse decisions in his one year in the NFL (and then a much, much smarter decision to enter rehab). Manziel hasn't exhibited anything that makes me think he's any better of an NFL QB prospect than Pryor.
Regardless of who's better, Pryor has proven that he isn't a good NFL QB and he'll be getting a shot at WR - which could be a good fit for his athleticism. Manziel, on the other hand, has no other position to fall back on.
