And if they demote him to 3rd string after all the steps he has taken then they lose him forever. He'll ask for a trade or release.

Why would any other team be bothered to trade for him if he can't crack the top 2 QB spots on a team starved for QB talent? That isn't even considering the off the field nonsense from last season.

From Weedone to Hoyer to McCown what a task to show your QB talents. Trade not a chance.

  • Well I see I caught a few fish with my statement. I just think it is amazing how people here think he is already headed for 3rd string by day 4 and completely ignore his one excellent day. How did that happen anyway? Not the ignoring part, the part where he failed on only 1 pass all day. What does it mean? Did he "get it" and then lose it overnight? Should it be treated as an aberration?

Put your Manziel A&M and his preseason for 2014 tapes away. Watch the games JM played regular season with the same banged up OL as Shaw had at Baltimore and you tell me what game to watch of JM that matches who's ready??

That's the beauty of the Rapala Manziel Special. Fish bite for hours even after I've spent all day on the Goldfish machines in Isle of Capri in Blackhawk. 😆

  • Bunch of reports about how Johnny looked great out of the shotgun today. Shocker. Went with the 1s some too.

You know (and this isn't some endorsement for JM here) but I'm curious to see if the shotgun takes a much stronger hold in the NFL in 5-7 years. I think the way things are going more and more teams with younger QB's will work a much larger % out of it or a pistol.

Peyton seems to do ok with it. Should be interesting to see how they incorporate more running game out of it as Kubiak plans this year. Lots of reports about how they want to take more pressure off their aging QB with a change in style and get back to the formula that allowed an aging Elway to win back to back Superbowls. I don't think that is lost on our staff that is aware they have two second year players who worked well out of a similar system. Even Sumlin is adapting it more for the run out of his game-long hurry-up offense with a new run game coordinator to go with his pro-style soph QB out of the shotgun.

Nah let's play to the exact opposite of his skill set again!

The opposite of his skill set is what every other QB in the NFL can do. You know, play under center, memorize plays, etc.

While tailoring your offense to talent is a necessity, even the best QB'a from shotgun operate under center frequently and with zero issue.

Can't be in the gun on 95% of your plays.

Manziel can play in the shotgun all he wants....

    ...in Canada.

  • I missed where every other QB in the NFL was running the zone read against a top 10 D with 4.65 speed. Can we see some citations? Surely they are a many given your cavalier attitude on the matter.

4.65 and 'speed' don't belong in the same sentence.

Also, no they're aren't many QB's like that. Probably due to health risk (See 3, RG) or being one trick ponies that are subpar from the pocket ( see, Kaepernick and Newton)

  • That was my point. He's not that fast. The zone read is for fast people.

So he isn't fast enough to run the read and not good enough to continously operate from the pocket... so what's your point on how the gun plays to his strength ?

If anything it would be a weakness because he has to take his eyes off the defense. When you don't make quick and smart decisions as is, every half second counts when you're making reads.

  • How does the shotgun make you take your eyes off the defense? Play action and 5 step drops take your eyes off the defense. Your entire post went way over my head.

You ever play football before, home boy?

Ball action can take your eyes off a defense, yes. A 5 step drop does not. Unless you're looking at your feet?

When under center you go from having your eyes on the defense at all times then into your drop (without ball fake )

When in shotgun your first priority is eyes on catching the ball from center then adjusting yourself to your first read. It's a split second, but it's a lot when speaking of being a passer.

  • Id say there are pros and cons to the shotgun......

Hey, if thats what Johnny needs to succeed, then Im all for it.....whatever it takes....BUT, if it's the only formation that you can play from, then thats an issue and seriously diminishes the offensive options(and definitely makes life easier for the D).....

Also kind of stifles the running game. If we can only pass from the shotgun, then it'll be easy for D's to anticipate the play if our QB lines up under center.........

And, yes, shotgun forces the QB to take his eyes off the D and concentrate on receiving the snap....while QB's under center can scan the D the whole time.....no need to look away......
