  • Zombo, I'm with you. I'm looking forward to the 20 yard outs and the deep ball throws he threw so well for the Ags. It seemed like he was under constant pressure last night and didn't have time to make those throws, but without seeing the all-22, it's hard to know if he was missing open guys down field.

Two plays I liked to see were when he avoided pressure by rolling right, then threw to an open receiver a couple yards short of the first down. The second, two guys came free blitzing and he immediately recognized it and hit his hot receiver for about 6 yards.

He just didn't look so overwhelmed, like he did last year. It was a very good showing for Johnny, I thought. Baby steps, but progress.

And I love seeing the way he and McCown interact. I think that relationship, and the fact that Josh looks so good, works to take pressure off Johnny, which is perfect.

Ya, I was trying to be polite and not incite the fanbois, but I'm not seeing those big time NFL throws yet, he seems under-armed for a starting role.

.. I'm totally with ya.. I couldn't give 2 shits about the little homo fanbois... They can keep slobbering all they want.. Trust Me when I tell ya.. Manziel will be out of football in 2 years , selling pantyhose to his little fanboi friends.

I would bet all I own that Johnny is not out of football in two years.

And you're so right about everything else all of the time.

Nice, objective conclusion, Ag... now about those data points... 😉

The hot read was a high point, however, pressure that produced the first roll right was a bit phantom-ish. The subsequent throw to West was back towards the middle of the field and made me gasp, but it was completed. Dissect the play and there's no sign the size of the blitz or it's direction was recognized. The escape route was between the LG and LT doubling as a throwing lane to Bibbs curling about 2 yards past the 1st-down marker.

The 2nd roll-right producing pressure was completely phantom. I honestly think the issue then was he could not see Hartline over the line. Sprint a bit right and clear and the ball was rifled for a first... nice play, but no pressure.

The time he was flushed left and threw it away was a sign of maturity. It might have been the result of some coaching up after the earlier throw to West...

By far his most dangerous throw was the middle curl towards Housler to start our last possession. It was late. The throw appeared to be delayed once again by a lack of a sight line.

Crawl before you walk, walk before...

  • Its Preseason. At some point (1st qrt. with guaranteed ? D 1's) we have to alternate Josh & Johnny per procession with our 1's OL to see what we got now in JM. Nobody is setting their feet with our OL 2's. Coaches may already have answered that question at practice?

  • Tour, rewatching those plays.

I have to disagree on the first scramble. It wasn't phantom pressure. A late block upended a middle blitz, and 55 was about to destroy Johnny. I agree he might have been able to get it to Hartline, but he would've taken a huge hit after release.

The second was a bit phantom, but the pocket was starting to give way up the middle. I agree in general that he tends to take off too soon, but with him, that can lead to huge plays.

One thing that still looks good, though is his accuracy, even on the run. He puts it where the receiver can run with it.

The biggest mistake was when he stared down the receiver and the ball got batted down. Hopefully he starts to use his eyes better.

Such is the life of a QB, there are times when you'll have to stand tall in the face of pressure and make a throw knowing you might get hit.

It's a double edge sword with taking off early. He will get tracked down by ends and backers not trying to push up field. Defenses won't look to push the pocket so much as just putting a fence up and waiting for Johnny to come to them.

Overall what I saw last night I expected last year. So by this time next year with continued emphasis on improvement I'd expect to see a near starting caliber QB.

  • Ag,

On the first "scramble" JM ran towards #55's right edge rush... essentially out of the frying pan and towards the fire. Like I said the escape path was left. Hartline running his square was the poorer choice to the left side.

As for the batted ball... I only remember one and far from starring down his target what I saw was a QB in such a hurry to get the ball out that he half-assed his play fake... the edge rusher and soon-to-be-ball-batter not surprisingly did not bite at all.

lol... we'd better stop praising JM before we pick him to pieces...

  • Tour, watch again. He scrambled out of harm's way and 55 ended up on his ass.

2 batted balls. 1st was a screen that was doomed from the start. Second was Johnny staring down a curl route, safety broke on the ball and knocked it down. I'm referring to the second.

His best throw might have been his last, hit the receiver in the chest.

  • Thought it might be time to inject a little comic relief...

    From Bud Shaw's latest...

    • Brandon Weeden fumbled a snap in an exhibition game and then slapped at the ball instead of falling on it.

    I miss that guy.

Hard to argue with such obvious genius.
