CLEVELAND -- Browns running back and special teams core player Jason Wright has agreed to a two-year contract with the Arizona Cardinals for about $2 million.

Wright will replace J.J. Arrington, who signed with Denver, as the Cardinals' third-down back. The Arizona coaches believe Wright will be an upgrade in pass protection and on special teams.

"It's just a great opportunity for Jason to go to a team that went to the Super Bowl last year," agent Mike McCartney said. "We feel Arizona is a good fit for him."

The Browns did make an offer to retain Wright, McCartney said.

Wright's rushing totals were down last year (23 carries, 85 yards) as the Browns gave more opportunities to Jerome Harrison and Josh Cribbs. But the blitz-pickup specialist still participated in more than 30 percent of the offensive snaps in 2008.

Wright also had 22 catches and was a regular on most of the special teams.

"Jason leaves with tremendous feelings about the Browns," McCartney said.

    Hey Dan!!! 🙂

  • 23 carries for 85 yards?!?! Not going to miss this kid... now maybe we can get a better look that that Allen Patrick kid...

  • "Blitz Pickup" is what he was known for. On the other hand, if you see him in there, you know it's going to be a pass (most of the time)...just a thought.

    GOOD LUCK JASON!

  • great...now we have no backs that can block....

  • That's no big deal. Good for him.

Can I steal your SOCAL browns fan logo? Im in San Diego where are u?

No logo stealing. 😉 I'm in Orange county.

  • Watch that video and tell me you aren't a Jason Wright fan. He was completely average, but played hard and is a genuinely good person. I remember reading somewhere that he is planning to go to medical school with the money he earns in the NFL.

    Good luck, Jason.

don't get me wrong he did pick up blitzes well... but it tipped our hand a lil when he was in there

He was a monster blitz picker-upper. . . and averaged more YPC than Lewis did, eh! Most of all I'm going to miss his leadership, dedication, work ethic, and his smarts. Easily one of the smartest players on the Browns team. . . which is why I'm surprised ManKok let him get away.

I think the video posted above is a great representation of why I wanted to keep him around.

  • I"m in no way bashing JW. He's a very good individual and seems to be genuwine. I just feel that Harrison has a better upside.. I do with Jason the best with hit future football career and good luck in med school if that's true..

  • Looks like CLE will be drafting a RB for sure now.

  • wright was too vanilla, let him go

  • BYE BYE PLOWHORSE... capable #3 at best.. brings no wiggle and no explosion to the game. Easily replaceble with any UDFA out of college.

  • No hard feelings on the guy. Just not a 'wow' player to me. He played hard, so I wish him well. Good luck Jason.

  • Darn it.....Undisclosed terms. I wanted to see how much they overpaid him.

Clayton's right: The Browns use one of their #2s on a back.

    I agree..it's a long drop to the 4th round.

  • nice link

    As they should

  • So with the picks we have right now in the 1st and 2nd, we take a lb, rb and guard would we all be happy?

  • no great loss...Can you all say Shonn Greene?
