  • It's weird how liberals want drugs legal "because they will get them anyways"...

Meanwhile.... newsflash to hardcore liberals - criminals don't obey gun laws.

As woody said, that's not the reason people want drugs legal.

Oh and a pox on those dastardly street gangs with their high end weapons manufacturing facilities. Cal how do you think those gangs acquire those weapons in the first place?

  • does the firearm stork drop them off in the middle of the night?

When a firearm is old enough, it can go out and kill all on its own.

    Twat.

Why are you bringing up a failed gun sting that went to the Mexican cartels? We're talking about American street gangs, that were around and procuring top shelf weaponry since Obama was a kid. They get them from people who somehow got the legally. I'm inherently skeptical to the notion that mass amounts of weapons are being smuggled into the country. Not with all the makers of said weapons residing right here in the U.S.

  • Anyone care to comment on the results of the study presented in the OP?

Several of you here were concerned with the ease in which potential criminals could "purchase guns online, or at gunshows"

I understand that traditional sampling is not used in this survey, but that's the point. "People in jail for gun crimes or crimes committed while using a gun: tell us how you obtained the gun(s)"

    ...

    "Oh."

  • Doesn't come as a huge surprise - I don't think anyone's really thinking that gang members generally obtain their guns through legal means. It's a separate stream from crazy timmy taking his gun and shooting random people on the street.

That being said, do these people have their own gun factory, or do they instead get them from some black market arms dealer? And where does that person get the guns and things from? There's a stream from manufacturer, to middle man, to gang members - taking guns off of gang members is just cutting the weed but not removing the roots.

Straw purchases and theft are likely the culprits. Both of which can't be helped.

  • And straw purchases and theft are already illegal. Go figure

    how it keeps happening.

Yeah you can't make it more illegal.

TY, somebody gets it. Street gangs aren't high tooling their own gear. And it ain't all from "theft". These dudes are getting hooked up through middle men that deal with the gun manufacturers. The how's an why's I dunno, but i'm sure it's big money. These street gangs deal in drugs so i'm sure they're more than fine with high premiums.

yes, I know. But we have to find out how they're doing it right? My guess is they launder it out through more middle men through gun shows. It's not like the movies where a dude in a boxtruck shows up with a small fortune in arms. Lord of War was a good flick though, highly highly recommend that movie.

Not through the gun manufacturers. These gangs obtain their guns from their employers.

    The cartels.

The cartels want to ensure there product makes it to market and want as much security and firepower along the way to make that happen.

It's pretty obvious how the cartels are getting armed.

I thought I could just walk into a gun show and pick up RPGs and hand grenades. That is what Bloomberg told me.

It is laughable when they say that U.S. firearms are causing the trouble in Mexico when you see these weapon caches full of full auto rifles and anti- tank rockets.

Cartels in South America (or other places outside the US)? Seems like the tougher borders for immigrants would go hand in hand with tougher borders for smugglers. I'm generally in favour of both (though there's more nuance to the immigration issue).

Cartels in the US? It's not like these are small operations, you can't make guns in a back yard, at least not on the scale that's causing the problems.

I've seen someone make a fully auto uzi from sheet metal. It's not entirely difficult if you know what you are doing. And yes I am aware that my friend committed a crime. He has since then dismantled the weapon.

One gun being made is not the issue - it's the scale of the process that's the issue. Of course, there's nothing stopping anybody from making a gun, or a bomb, or whatever from easily obtainable materials, but to supply them on the scale we're seeing requires more than a, I think the american term is 'mom and pop' organisation?
