Today Was a Gut Check - that Passed with an A+

  • Agree... this was a win against a pretty bad team that was hurt by injury even more than we were, but...

It was a division win in a place we had not won in forever... or nearly 8 years.

Edit: And... within the Division we are tied with Cinci at 1-0...

    Tonite! We Dance!

  • Big issue with the team is riding too much of an emotional high.

Denver is coming to town with the best defense in the NFL. It's going to be an absolute slug fest. Unless this team is prepared to impose their will and be

more physical than the Donkeys, a win like this can take the sails out of a season as well.

Celebrate the win. Capture the feeling. Don't bank on it lasting in the NFL.

Good point. Hopefully they learned after reading how good they were after the TN win that next week starts just 1 day after the win.

  • Hey any given Sunday.. We can win.. so.. I'm not in the dumps over the Donkeys comin to town... I'm sure the pundits will write us off this week.. so fucking what. It's why you play the games...

  • What I recently thought of as a major ass-kicking in the works suddenly looks like

a winnable game. Peyton's arm strength has decreased dramatically.

Well if our offense keeps clicking we have a shot, but the defense still has to figure out how to not give up 15YPC and get in Peyton's face.

  • I love Flip's offense, these guys have bought into it.

Not sure if the same is true for the defense and O'Neil.

It's one thing to make mistakes, or be fooled....

and quite another to be made a fool of - something surely is wrong

and needs tweaked with this defense.

I believe it's the lb play, and the substitutions that signal

advance warning of what the defense is going to do.

Pettine needs to have Bill Parcells in fast, to consult with.

  • It was great to finally win in Baltimore. But I'm still wondering if they're going to fix the defense. We can't let Forsett run over 100 yards! I noticed the Giants are a better run defense after drafting Landon Collins. What do the Browns need to do? If they stop the run they win games. Right now it's our defensive line that needs to come together. And hopefully before Denver comes to town. I would give my eye teeth to see them maul Peyton Manning. He's old and immobile and we should be able to beat them at home. Yes they have the #1 defense, and that's how they're winning. We win next week against a good team is all I ask for.

  • Love this win, and I feel like this is the reason pettine needs time(to those still crying to fire him). He really has respect from the team, they buy in to the "play like a brown" philosophy, and they usually come off a loss and play hard. They adjusted during this game, and the adjustments worked. However, I see two major problems. 1. It's very hard to pass to set up the run, as it seems like is our new gameplan, seems to be working for now tho, so I guess don't mess with something that ain't broke. But, 9 rushing yds in the first half doesn't cut it. A good team would have been crushing us, 14-9 was very fortunate. 2.Our D pretty much sucks. Pettine needs to take some more control there. I believe in him as far as building a strong D, O'Neil, not so much. I dunno if you fire him, but pettine needs to do more there.

  • when you have a qb struggling, and the 9 million dollar statue isn't playing....

and your receivers are little short guys....

defenses are looking to stop the run, and dare the offense to beat them passing.

So, they DID ! I look for Denver to watch the film and figure that being all in to stop the run

isn't going to work like it did earlier in the season when the offense was out of sync.

Meanwhile, the defense is still out of sync.

  • Denver is all smoke and mirrors. Browns win that game.

  • Denver is definitely beatable but McCown needs to be mistake free football (which he's shown he can do). Denever is undefeated but 3 of those wins now were literally around the defense for the Broncos getting points. This will be one of the few times I say it but play a boring game, punt and play field position and we got a shot.

At least we have an all-pro punter.

Playing a boring game isn't really possible if we can't run the ball. Money McCown will probably throw 40+ times again.

  • This was an absolutely amazing victory. We struggled in the first half, again with terrible red zone execution, but that last FG before halftime really helped our momentum. It's safe to say our team didn't quit, and to me, that's so big. Not that I expected them to, but losing a heart breaker last week and having so much negativity floating around in the media makes things very difficult. What amazes me is our ability to throw the ball. McCown was deadly accurate, and we didn't drop anything. And I love the way we said we were going to involve our RB's in the passing game, and we really stuck with it. Both Crowell and Johnson have a deadly burst of speed and change of direction after they catch the ball, and Crowell especially has a nose for the end zone when he gets close. Sure, we'd love to run the ball more in the first half of games, but if an opposing defense is putting 25 players in the box, we have to adjust. That delay handoff from the shotgun sure works well, and we have incredible creativity on 3rd and shorts. I'd be delighted to run the ball on 3rd and 1, but we seem to have a litany of different short pass plays that are just as effective. The only issue for our offense is our red zone execution. If we're ever going to string together some victories, this will HAVE to improve...especially since our defense doesn't appear to enjoy forcing FG's. Which brings me to the defense...

Oh boy. I don't want to change the tune of my post because I promise I'm ecstatic, but geez. We continue to have awful penalties, we don't force ANY turnovers, and we can't get to the QB with any regularity. We also continue to give up too many chunk plays on relatively benign plays, and it kills us. That penalty at the end on K'Waun Williams could've very easily cost us the game. I do love how our defense somehow held them to a FG at the end, and then of course the amazing 3 and out in OT. Oh, and the failed two-point conversion was MONEY as well. But in general, our defense has a great deal of shortcomings, and it's getting worse, not better. I'm a fan, and I obviously don't have the answers, but I'm hoping to heck our coaches do. I didn't see the usual number of annoying defensive holding or pass interference calls, but we still had a couple of really bad flags that a team like ours just can't live with. We need someone to make the amazing play. A diving catch on a tipped pass, a bone-jarring hit that causes a fumble, a strip sack, pick 6...SOMETHING. Big plays are sorely lacking from our defense, and we will need that more than ever in the coming weeks against stiff competition.

I really don't want to sound like a negative Nancy, as I'm happier today than I have been on a Monday in QUITE some time. We fought hard, bounced back, answered drives, and made plays when we had to have them. Our rookie kicker was baptized in a pressure cooker, and came out smelling like a rose. I love the fact that we got Coons close for an easier kick. We could have VERY easily stalled for a 50 yard game-winner...difficult for anybody, especially a rookie. Notching a divisional ROAD win against a team we haven't beaten since Nam is so big, and while I don't want to make TOO big of a deal about one victory, I do believe there are events during a season that can act as springboards to success. Our next game is obviously difficult, to put it mildly, but the Broncos also don't look invincible. Would I pick our Browns to win? No...no I wouldn't, but the Broncos aren't going 16-0, and a trip to Cleveland could easily be a trap game. We have to pray that Haden recovers quickly, as we will certainly need him against Manning and Thomas.

I sure hope our coach knows we caught a severe break this weekend. His inexcusable gaff of failing to call a timeout when the Ravens had the ball in the red zone ALMOST cost us the game. What bothers me more is he didn't even have an excuse as to WHY he didn't call a timeout. We moved the ball down the field and the clock hit zero right when Benjamin got tackled at around the 33 yard line of Baltimore. That's about a 50 yard FG attempt, difficult for anyone, but it was perfect weather, and if coach called a timeout when he should've, we could have had at least 20 more seconds to get closer. Mistakes like that COST victories in the NFL, and we see it almost every week. Had we not pulled this game out in OT, Pettine would have had a BUNCH of questions to answer about this mistake, and it would've been yet another nail in his coaching coffin. However, we survived, and let's hope it doesn't happen again. As silly as it sounds, teams must learn how to win in the NFL, and it can come down to the smallest details. We must control the things we can control, and hope this single victory can somehow spawn additional success.

Damn...this victory feels so good. I loved hearing how our players were dancing and hugging in the locker room.

Eh, I meant "boring" as they likely won't be throwing for 450+ on Denver. Just gotta take what they give you and play field position against a good defense.
