Manziel could face NFL discipline for domestic incident

BEREA, Ohio (AP) — Johnny Manziel's roadside argument with his girlfriend could lead to punishment from the NFL.
Browns coach Mike Pettine said Monday that the league is investigating the high-profile backup quarterback's domestic dispute last week. Manziel was questioned by police in Avon, Ohio, after his girlfriend claimed he was physical with her when the two had a heated disagreement while driving on an Interstate highway.
Colleen Crowley can be heard telling police on a dash-cam video that Manziel was physical with her, saying he "he hit me a couple times." Manziel was not arrested and Crowley, who police said appeared intoxicated, did not press charges.
League spokesman Brian McCarthy said Manziel's situation will be reviewed.
"It is standard procedure to look into any incident that is a potential violation of our personal conduct policy," McCarthy said in an email.
Pettine did not have a timetable on the league's inquiry.
Following his rocky rookie seasaon, Manziel spent 70 days in a Pennsylvania rehab facility during the offseason for an unknown condition. It's not known if he is in the league's substance-abuse program. If he is and if he violated any conditions, Manziel could face additional fines or suspensions.
Pettine, who began his Monday news conference following an overtime loss to Denver addressing Manziel's situation, said the 22-year-old was active for Sunday's game because the team was satisfied with its investigation into the incident.
Manziel disputed the notion the team gave Manziel a free pass by having him available to play.
"We've dealt with it, it's not like we ignored it," Pettine said. "Until we had all the information from the police and when the league concludes their report we'll have a more total picture of what happened. But given the details that we had, we made our decision based on the details we had in hand."
In his second season with Cleveland, Pettine bristled at the idea that there is no accountability with his players for their actions.
"I'm not of the mind that all discipline has to be public," Pettine said. "If you think we're turning a cheek to it and ignoring it, you'd be dead wrong. I get the concern and I get the outcry and I know everything with him is magnified times a thousand.
"He's made a lot of strides and this is a process for him and I know it's something that is upsetting. It's upsetting for all of us."
Pettine would not say if the Browns have considered trading Manziel, a first-round draft pick in 2014.
On Monday, Avon Police released its dash-cam video and 9-1-1 emergency calls from the roadside incident, which happened a week ago when the Browns were off. Manziel admitted to police that he drank alcohol earlier in the day before his argument with Crowley.
On the video, Manziel explains to an officer what led to his dispute with Crowley. He said she flung his wallet out the window of his car and he and an officer can be seen looking for it along the roadside. Manziel and Crowley were allowed to leave the scene together.
Browns linebacker Karlos Dansby said Manziel has not become a distraction to the team and he sympathizes with him living in the spotlight.
"Right now he's just a prisoner of his success," Dansby said. "If you're going to be successful like you are and on level that you're on, any little thing and everything is scrutinized. You're up under a microscope, you gotta walk a different path."

I watched it as well....she's a fucking freak show...good lord, I'm guessing she can suck a tennis ball through a garden hose because otherwise she's worthless.

Manziel appeared pretty calm for a dude being questioned by police...again if it wasn't for him drinking, I would say this is a total non story. But for god's sake Johnny...dump the girl.

I dont think its a non story at all....In fact, Im thinking this may be the end of Johnny here in Cleveland.....

Just a few weeks ago, Pat McManamon was saying "his info" already had the Browns at the "fed up" level. Honestly, I think Pet wishes he'd never even heard of Johnny, let alone having to be his coach. So, he endures yet another hi pressure pressy all about his Back Up QB. What coach wants to deal with this over and over and over and over. Which is what Pet has been doing.

Manziel could face NFL discipline for domestic incident ...

    .....and/or possible alcohol consumption.....ala Josh Gordon....."if" he's in the program(and I think he is)...

As above....I think the odds say he is already in the program and it was probably the reason he entered rehab to begin with. After all his statements of "I aint changing for nobody", he suddenly decided 70 days in a clinic was needed all on his own???....(cmon)...hahaha....I think someone decided for him or it was negotiated to prevent other action....
Pettine would not say if the Browns have considered trading Manziel, a first-round draft pick in 2014.
You can bet they have considered it and are, in fact, trying to find a suitor as we speak.....
Finally...FARMER, who has not spoken since his return, should be the one answering all the Johnny Distraction questions....Pettine should be coaching, not baby sitting or spinning PR on our loose cannon back up.....

Dont care if this chick is a straight up kunt, he put hands on her he needs to be held accountable. Again she doesn't wanna press charges only cause it'll Fuck up her meal ticket. She needs to get away from him just as much as he needs to vet away from her. This is only the tip of the ice berg. Alcohol + young man with temper and ego issues+ drama kunt= DANGER

If she put her hands on him, should she be held accountable? If so, in what way?

That's a tough one. I don't see any situation where it's ok to hit or push a female. But that's me...and I know there will be other opinions on this. Weird situation all around since he was in the car and driving while she's going bat shit crazy.

  • If he really hit her a few times, I could see the NFL suspending him for a season.

  • Faded said:

Is someone alleging that "he hit her a few times"?

You can hear her saying it on the dash cam video.

  • Report states; was their any striking, punching or Hair pulling JM responses NO. No facial abrasions reported. Than where's the face window slamming in these questions? 10-12 is on a Monday. Please tell me he does not admit to drinking alcohol, than showing up for work. this was a off day?

  • Johnny Manziel: Outperformed today by Landry Jones, the opposing QB in his final college bowl game [A&M vs Oklahoma].

Jones, today for the squeelers: 8/12, 168, 2td for a near-perfect rating of 149.3 in just over 1 quarter of play.

I'm not a big manziel fan, but half of those yards came on a 10 yard slant that turned into like an 80 yd TD..

She told the officer as documented in the report Johnny hit her a couple of times in the car. I can assure you between that and the abrasions on her arm any f us would have been arrested. This is likely not over.

So letting her jump out of the car is a better alternative? Ok.

  • According to the GF, she told the cops that "he hit me a couple of times."

@KosichJohn: "She's not the right one he should be with I'll tell you that much." Paul Kruger on Johnny Manziel's girlfriend. https://t.co/vxmz0Gh98D

Monday's always day off I think, if the games on Sunday.

  • Having lost another friend to addiction just today, I can say with out a doubt it is a serious issue often with very devastating consequences. If Johnny truly is an alcoholic, I really hope he finds/gets the help he needs.

Not sure why she has any credibility here. And if there was anything to prove her bogus claim that he slammed her head into the window, we'd have seen them.

I just listened to the dash cam. Johnny is perfectly cognizant and reasonable. Colleen is cursing at the cops, crying, clearly wasted. The cop also helped Johnny look for his wallet, which Colleen, in another attempt to prove credibility of her testimony, had thrown into a field. Yeah she sounds legit....

His only mistake here is not having dumped her, as far as I can tell.

Correct. Maybe with some film review.

  • Just listened to Pett's presser.

    A. He's dumb for letting the questions drag on so long. Make a statement. Answer a couple questions. Then say "that's all I have to say on that." Repeat answer every time a Johnny question is asked. Walk out of the presser of the reporters don't move on. It's pretty simple.

    B. Given A, it's pretty easy to see why Pettine was so annoyed (and he really wasn't THAT annoyed). It looked to me like he was more annoyed by the fact that the media wouldn't shut up than him being annoyed that we're talking about Johnny again.

Yes, Pettine did say "if any other guy had done this, would we be talking about this the entire time?" (Paraphrase). That could either mean he thinks it's no big deal and is being blown out of proportion. Or that could mean that Pettine is annoyed that Johnny's "johnnyness," if you will, just ruined his press conference. You could sell me either way.

Personally, when people asked why Johnny didn't get the treatment that our OL coach received given that there were allegations Johnny hit her, it really felt to me like Pettine wanted to be like "look everyone, Colleen is a dumb idiot. The only marks she had were from Johnny trying to keep her in the car. The cops let Johnny walk. There was no issue. The girl is BSC. Stop wasting my time with the comparison." But that's just my read.

    C. Pettine was completely and unequivocally complimentary of Johnny's work in the locker room and on the field this year. Said he has been an "A+ in the building." I really don't think he goes out of the way to take up for the kid in that manner if they're planning on, or even thinking about, cutting him.
