After Rams game, what I think I thunk

  • And crap always flows downhill, starting at the top

  • Our most glaring problem is our lack of ability converting in the dang red zone. We get the ball deep into the opposition's side of the field, and it seems like we ALWAYS stall. I don't know if we are the worst in the league at converting touchdowns, but I know we have to be close to it. EVERY time we get close, we ALWAYS throw the ball horizontally, instead of trying to stick it in. Yes, I realize how dangerous it is, and that it gets very congested, but whenever I watch other teams, they attack the end zone. (Hey Pettine, that's the painted grass area where you get 6, instead of 3).

How many times have we seen WR screen passes that don't work? Flare passes to Malcom Johnson? Horizontal passes to Duke Johnson? And don't get me started on running the ball in for a score...we've done that just TWICE this season, and one of those came from MCCOWN! Last year we at least punched it in with Crowell routinely, right? We have the same offensive line, so what the heck happened?

Whenever we get close to scoring, I always think we're getting 3, and it seems like I'm usually right. You can't win in the NFL doing that. Yeah, I know we lost 4 fumbles, had 11 penalties for close to 100 yards, and generally looked like a hot steaming pile of you know what, but we need to get 7 if we're going to ever start winning some of these games. If the Browns think THIS game was tough, wait until the undefeated Bengals show up, or the high powered Cardinals.

I need to stop typing now before I just go on a cursing rant. I get so excited every year, and I wish I didn't.

  • 1. The # 1 problem with the offense... is wr's. They make small db's look tall.

They must have a big, blue chip wr who can get open. Defenses are keying

on the run, and daring McCown to win a game with Barnidge and Travis.

An AJ Green would make a world of difference.

    2. The # 2 problem with the offense, is running most all the time on first down.

What the hell is up with that? Defenses are going all out to storm the los,

shutting down the run on their way to the qb. Defenses surely laugh at the

lack of bigtime wr's on the Browns offense.

    3. McCown isn't the problem - he is making a far better case for himself with a better oline.

But when teams have a good defense, they double up on Barnidge, and they have a cb

who can cover Travis most of the time - it's often over, considering the constant, stupid,

running on first down. Sure, he's made some big mistakes, but so does Peyton Manning.

If only McCown had receivers like Peyton does.

    4. Putting three wr's on one side of the line, and throwing a bubble screen is not fooling

any defense. The idea, is to show one thing, and do another, trick the defenses.

And running the ball most all the time on first down is not tricky. dammit.

    5. After today's fiasco, I can see putting JM in there - the advantage of JM's mobility

    will pay off hugely.

    6. The Browns little bitty wr's aren't big enough for smash mouth football.

    7. Duke Johnson is a star in the making, and so is what'shisname the big rb.

    8. Too much rolling shoulder tackles - reminds me of T. J. Ward.

    9. dammit. I'm so disappointed in that game, I can't get to ten.....

Agree....you gotta have a running game.....but pass the ball on 1st down as much as run it.

McCowns numbers were outstanding.....but one: TDs. 26 out of 32? 81.25% Who wouldn't take that. But the lack of points is stupid.

Blame it mainly on TOs sure. It doesn't do a lot of good for the WR to catch it if he is just going to turn around and fumble it.

    This is a repeat.

    8. Too much rolling shoulder tackles - reminds me of T. J. Ward.

I would make this entire team do the Oklahoma drills.....fuck the union rules against teaching tackling.

    9. dammit. I'm so disappointed in that game, I can't get to ten.....

  • The #1 problem facing the Browns is schemes. The players are talented enough to win more often, but they're handcuffed by having to play in schemes that don't maximize their talents.

Take the defense. It's plainly obvious that the defensive scheme for stopping the run is not working. The linebackers are supposed to guess how the d-line will react to the play in-progress and then react accordingly. The problem with that scheme is the word "guess." The linebackers too often mis-read the d-line and, as a result, get too spread out - allowing running backs too many one-on-one situations with a linebacker. Solution: revise the scheme to shore-up the gaps and bring multiple tacklers to the ball - and keep the guesswork out of the equation.

  • We need to get back to basics on defense for sure. Too many changes play to play, many times yesterday our players are talking and pointing to each other even as the ball is snapped

  • And stop the committee. Commit to a player in a position and stick with that player. This merry go round is killing the Browns.

  • why the hell would a defensive coach keep taking Danny Shelton

out of each 4 downs on passing downs? How many times does

    that happen?

That's a disgrace - that's a hell of a lot of sprints to the sidelines

for no good reason. Has to be disheartening for a #1 draft pick

that kicks ass every second he's in the game....

  • RE: #1 that was supposed to be Dwayne Blow. He should be cut. Coulda had...... pick about 5 guys knowitall Farmer passed on.

Cal, if we're a "work in progress" it ain't working.

They let Skrine, Rubin and Sheard go and signed Bowe, Williams and Starks. Williams lost us two games and Bowe doesn't play. If Farmer has a job next year I hope it's not with the Browns!

Sheard?, you mean the guy who was inactive this week for NE because he's hurt again. I bet that's why they didn't resign him, he can't stay on the field. Starks hasn't been bad at all.

  • The NFL fucked us by suspending Gordon for the year, they fucked us last year for suspending him 10 games for some bullshit too. He's our blue chip WR that can't be covered and the NFL allows these fucking refs to ref one sided and determine the outcomes of too many fucking Browns games. I can't stand these refs. They are one sided for most of the game until the other team pulls far enough away to allow them to start to call plays.

On that Johnny Manziel slide at the end the QB gave himself up and still that faggot Ram bashes in helmet first on a defenseless QB. NO Call. Same ticky tack garbage ref calls all game on Schwartz, Thomas and the DBs. Complete and utter bullshit. The Rams lead with a helmet on our QB with a late hit and no call. Dirty fucks, I hate them.

    Agree 100%.

We got our name, team and colors back, and that's it. I don't see any other team get shafted as often as the Browns.

Being inept at personnel decisions, coaching decisions is one thing. The (unjustified) penalties are too frequent, something isn't right.

They didn't resign him because he couldn't play OLB
  • What is perfectly clear to all but a few, this team is just plain bad. Each off season fans think that the team is better than they really are. There are so many problems that don't seem easily fixed. I'd love a #1 WR talent to give us a real red zone threat but, and I can't believe I am going to say this, I don't know if our offensive line, with three fucking All-Pros, can protect the QB long enough. They run the ball on first down constantly because they are so afraid to get into definite passing downs because the offensive line fucking stinks.

Josh Gordon gave you the high hard one not the NFL. Josh Gordon failed to get on the field for 3 different college programs before he repeated history a few times here. And when Gordon came back to us in 2014 - he didn't care enough to know the plays, took some off and blew off a meeting. That doesn't show me a guy prioritizing football for the employer willing to pay him. Keep in mind, we were 6-4 while he was suspended - but finished 1-5 when his actions spoke louder than his empty promises.

Josh Gordon's biggest enemy is still Josh Gordon.

  • Cleveland Browns' offensive line needs to pick up its game instead of picking up its quarterback: Tom Reed analysis

BEREA, Ohio – If the NFL wanted to punish Johnny Manziel for his recent off-field incident, it should have ordered coach Mike Pettine to put him into Sunday's game earlier and let the backup absorb the abuse Josh McCown suffered.

"I saw a couple hits today watching the film and I'm like, 'How did he get up from that one?'" left guard Joel Bitonio told reporters Monday. "It's tough to see, but he's a tough guy, man."

No,no,no...Joel Bitonio. The point here is not how tough McCown is but that he is not getting the blocking protection from our offensive line.

FWIW its not just the Browns. In last night's game there were a few calls that had Jon Gruden scratching his head. They called a hold on a TE for the Cardinals and Gruden said "I see nothing there that would have warranted that flag". And I agreed. Replays showed absolutely nothing than the fact that a blocker was engaged with a defender.

Great line by Mr. Reed... StL was easily the hardest hitting D we've faced in 2015. But it's not too late as here come AZ. Similar mold, but not quite to the Rams level.

  • Yep and IMO Josh ripped the locker room apart. We were fine without him and when he did come back and wanting to know why JM is not the starting QB the shit went south. I really think Brian Hoyer should still be our QB, but even that would not fix our D
