Origins (trivia)

The Browns Board
21 6 481
  • Good job. Only 4 left unanswered....and honestly these are quite obscure...and difficult.....but lets try a second chance saloon on them:

    Original city of:

    3. Baltimore Orioles.....hint....is not St. Louis where they played as the Browns (Balt. is 3rd city team has been in)

    5. Washington Wizards.....hint...is not Baltimore where they played as the Bullets (Washington is 3rd city for this franchise)

    6. New Jersey Devils....hint...is not Colorado where they played as the Rockies (NJ is third "city" for this franchise)

    7. Atlanta Hawks....hint....in not St. Louis where they played (ATL is actually 4th city this team has played in)

    2. Kansas City Chiefs: Dallas (as the Texans)

    Check

    4. Milwaukee Brewers: not sure, but the prior Milwaukee team, the Braves, moved to Atlanta and had come from Boston??? I remember having a Warren Spahn, Milwaukee Braves baseball card...

Maybe we can do some Milwaukee trivia......see Alice Cooper in Wayne's World for more info.

    5. Washington Wizards: Baltimore (as the Bullets)? NO

    6. San Antonio Spurs: Never followed the ABA...

    7. New Jersey Devils: Denver (as the NHL Colorado Rockies)? NO

    8. Colorado Avalanche: Quebec (as the WHA Nordiques) Check

    10. St. Louis Rams: Cleveland (as the Rams) Check

    11. Minnesota Twins: Washington, DC (as the Senators)? Check

    12. Texas Rangers: want to say they were also Washington, DC and also the Senators??? Check

    15. Arizona Coyotes: Winnipeg (as the WHA Jets)? Check

    16. Winnepeg Jets: Atlanta? I know they had a team after the Flames who moved to Calgary... but I can't think of the 2nd Atlanta team's name...

    Check

    17. Chicago Bears: Decatur, IL (as the NFL Staleys... love that name) Check (named after a wrench company or something.

    18. Arizona Cardinals: Chicago (as the Cardinals) Check

    19. San Francisco Giants: NY Giants... not sure which borough... played in the Polo Grounds... Queens?

NY sufficient for check......the Polo Grounds were in Manhattan.

    20. Los Angeles Dodgers: Brooklyn, NY Check

    21. Houston Rockets: ashamed to say I do not know... few probably do.

    22. LA Clippers... want to say Buffalo (as the NBA Braves? or Bisons?) I remember Ernie D and Bob McAdoo Check

    23. Dallas Stars: Minnesota (as the NHL North Stars)... the AHL Cleveland Barons was a "farm team" for the North Stars and the Barons' "star" Goalie, Ernie Wakely, spent time with the parent team.

I am not sure that narrative is correct....but you got the question right. I thought there was a Barons NHL team that was folded into the North Stars.

The AHL Barons were a farm team....but I am not sure for who.

    24. Carolina Hurricane: New England (as the WHA Whalers) later renamed Hartford Whalers.. I saw the three Howes (Gordy, Mark and Marty) play our Crusaders in Miletti's Richfield Coliseum while visiting my folks over Christmas one year.

    Check

    25. Baltimore Ravens: Baltimore... it's a Gip-trick question...And you got it!! Check

POP Quiz: What was the only WHA team to merge into the NHL in it's original city?

    Edmonton Oilers?

The AHL Barons were a farm team....but I am not sure for who. Trust me on this one... 😉...

Edit: or not... I may have conflated two separate things.

This says Barons were a North Stars farm team only '70-'72 http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/display_affiliations_parent.php?tmi=6876

This says Wakely was a Baron on and off throughout the '60's, but does not show him playing for the North Stars http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdisplay.php?pid=5612

Apparently even vivid memories can be erroneous...

POP Quiz: What was the only WHA team to merge into the NHL in it's original city?

Edmonton Oilers? Check... still there, but long ago they lost their "King" to L.A.

Well done, Gip... especially for a short week.

As the Barons were my NHL team, I then became a North Stars fan, but when they moved to Dallas I dropped them as my favorite team. Fuck Dallas.

Still don't have a favorite NHL team, I keep an eye on the Sabres and the Lightning.

But favorite hockey team is the Florida Everblades of the ECHL.

And the Everbabes ... they love me.

That Devils franchise may be the original California Golden Seals franchise.

St. Louis Browns ... I don't know where they came from ... Boston?

Wizards/Bullets ... maybe they came form Rochester or Syracuse or something,

    Hawks ... same answer.

None of these are even close, really. I will just finish it off as those are near impossible answers.

  • The Bengals game is coming up too fast this week to do a proper trivia on that subject. Thus I will do a somewhat quick hitter that won't rely on the Browns or their game.

Here is a list of current teams in the 4 major leagues. Your task is to simply name the city in which these NFL/MLB/NBA/NHL franchises actually started their existance in:

    4. Milwaukee Brewers:

Of all the sports I have always seen the best looking women in the greatest numbers at hockey games... even in the bowels of the old Cleveland Arena. Last live game I attended was in San Diego for their Seagulls in the late 90's... was still true.
