The Browns Board

  • Steve I also recall Pettine telling Johnny he was coming there as a backup within a day or two of being drafted. And obviously he did it very publicly.

Great... but next time post an article that quotes Pet then rather than one stating "The Browns said..." or "Browns officials said...".

What I have found googling ascribes the comment to Pet and Farmer.

That whole "Johnny is our back up" thing has been taken WAY out of context, both in this thread and by the media....

It was gleaned from a statement Jimmy Haslem made, in response to a question of how the Browns were gonna deal with having a "superstar" on the team and how they would deal with the "hollywood circus that is Johnny"....

and his reply was that "this isnt Hollywood and Johnny isnt being handed anything" and that "Hoyer was the incumbent, until unseated.".... So the WHOLE statement was that Johnny is the back up until he proves otherwise......and the Browns had an OPEN competition for the job, which Johnny did not win.....

I would also add that Bortles(taken 20 picks ahead of Johnny) was told on draft day that he would NOT play until 2015 or 2016.....so, why is Johnny entitled to a starting job, when the guy taken WAY ahead of him wasnt.....and why is it bad when we do it, but not bad when other teams do it......?????

Well within what I posted click on the "Act like a backup for now"-then in that one there are quotes written by Vic Carucci, "owner Jimmy Haslam says coach Mike Pettine made clear to @JManziel2 on Fri that he is the "backup" QB & needs to act accordingly." And Mary Kay Cabot, "haslam said Manziel has been told things like "you're the backup" and "this is not Hollywood." He said "Brian Hoyer is the starter"

    That any better?

A little... guess I'm just not hip to the new, double-deep link posting thing... 😉

    Also in the link-link...

The Cleveland Browns drafted Johnny Manziel to be the … backup?

It appears Manziel’s career in Cleveland will start that way, for now, at least.

Speaking at the Pro Football Hall of Fame, team owner Jimmy Haslam said incumbent Brian Hoyer, who is coming off of a torn anterior cruciate ligament, will enter training camp as the starter.

Sounds at minimum like an endorsement from the owner...

  • Steve,

I generally enjoy posting with you, but when you, or anyone, assigns motives to my opinions, I do not.

Sitting here trying to think of Browns I like or dislike on any basis other than as a football player.

Greco... definitely like his work ethic; in grading I guarded against favoring him.

    Shelton seems likable...

    Maybe Haden...

Can't think of any I dislike personally... not even Johnny.

Maybe that's unusual. Maybe it's because I live far away and rarely see or hear players as compared to NE Ohio fans.

As for draft day experts... of which I am not one... they were very split on JM as were GMs. That should not be news to you.

I thought I was reasonable in assigning motive. I said personally or professionally, right? It must be either the off field stuff or his lack of discipline or subpar performance on the field?

I was just relating my personal memory of the situation. I didn't post a link because I didn't feel anybody would call me a liar. (not that I am accusing you of it)

I have been confused in discussions about many things but I don't just make it up unless I am being facetious.

Blake Bortles started last year. They're still losing but he throws a ton to Robinson and Hurns! Derek Carr is getting better and Cooper and Crabtree are both scoring touchdowns. No matter who starts for the Browns next year they'd better get some weapons. I'm sick of watching all the players we passed on become NFL studs. Why couldn't the Browns at least have drafted Devin Smith from Ohio State. They got Mayle and let him go!

Who hasn't seen the field this year.

But Devin Smith is low in the pecking order. I was throwing a name out. Someone that would eventually be the number 1. You have to draft someone. I said Smith cuz he's going to be good down the road as Marshall @ Decker get older.

We didn't have to take them in the 1st round but Mayle isn't even on the team and Haslam was bragging about Mayle last August!

McCown probably does give us the best chance to win, but wouldn't it also be nice to see what Manziel can do with a full week of practice as the starter AND all of our WR's healthy? How is the kid supposed to get any better from the pocket if he doesn't get game experience? And why doesn't Pettien acknowledge this? I don't get it. And get Duke Johnson the damn ball.

Pettine has said....over and over again.....its his job to win on Sunday. Period.

Why would he care to develop a guy for next year, if he's gonna get fired for losing this year?.....I dont get that....

  • jiggins7919J jiggins7919 wrote on last edited by

But Pettine has not been given any indication he WILL be fired. If Manziel plays, struggles at first, but then looks better and better to close the year...I think that gives Pettine the best chance to come back. And frankly, it's not the OFFENSE that has gotten Pettine in this mess. Pettine needs to start Johnny and fix his awful defense if he wants to come back.

At this point it's moot- Pettine clearly favors McCown so we'll see him out there for the rest of the season if healthy. I think in this whole thread both sides of the argument have valid points, but it'll come out in the wash by the end of the season how the organization feels about coaches and their decisions.

We have McCown for a couple more years anyway.

I love McCown just for the effort he's put in. He's played pretty well, lots of good, some bad - but the guy is a great leader no doubt. Sometimes it looks like he's the only one that wants to play on the field.

What's the status on Haden and Whitner? I'd expect at least Whitner to clear the concussion protocol in 2 weeks time.

Haden is a no go, and they mentioned on the radio that Whitner has "an illness."
