POFO

The Browns need someone that the GM and coach report to, and it can't be Jimmy
Yes....the POFO. Doh!

So as long as it's a somewhat insulated layer. And the only name that has real experience and wants to get back in the game... Mike Shanahan.... And I am not advocating that...just the only real experienced name I can think of

As long as he does not bring Kyle along again, Mike may not be that bad.
Do you see what is happening to Matt Ryan with OC Kyle? He has turned into a complete mess.

Farmer traded up to get Gilbert Manziel and Terence West. Then last year he drafted Vincent Mayle.
In the meantime West and Mayle are gone, Gilbert sucks because either he can't play or they don't want him to play cornerback. We have an issue with evaluating talent and drafting. Farmer just sucks.
There are rookie running backs playing right now who are actually good! Example: Jeremy Langford, Karlos Williams, Javoris Allen and David Johnson. We got Duke Johnson.
There are wide receivers playing from the 2014 and 15 drafts we could have had. Example: Jarvis Landry, Allen Robinson, Allen Hurns, Evans, Beckham, and many many more.
Farmer passed on a plethora of talent from Kahlil Mack to Derek Carr and everyone in between. But he's a genius for finding free agents and late round talent?
The basics for a successful offense are QB, WR, RB, TE and Farmer can't seem to get that thru his head.
He has no eye for talent when you consider what we have and what he passed on.
PS Shaun Draugn another player they cut is helping all my fantasy teams go to the playoffs.

I've seen about 30 examples of that. It doesn't look like wedding bells either. The old man does know the league pretty good.As long as he does not bring Kyle along again, Mike may not be that bad.

I heard a radio sports talking head doing a comparison between the Browns and Bengals. I haven't done any fact checking, but the gist of the argument is the Bengals are better because they have continuity and fewer layers of management.
They basically have Mike Brown who is l think owner and gm, and Marvin Lewis. Granted, Bengals fans have done their fair share of bitching about Mike Brown when things weren't going so well. But they're going well now, so...

The bungles don't have a GM in the traditional role
Mike Brown is president
Senior vice president of player personnel... Pete Brown
vice president of player personnel... Paul Brown
executive vice president...Katie Blackburn
director of player personnel... Duke Tobin
They have 5 people listed as front office.
The Browns have 8 people listed as front office. And one of them is Jim Brown

Tony Grossi said it on the radio yesterday: this GM and this coach obsess about the #52 and #53 guys on the roster far more than they concern themselves with the Top Ten players on the roster.
They made Don Jones active because they wanted to be sure that their special teams coverage teams were right......but had Dwayne Bowe and Terrelle Pryor inactive instead.
A guy that might be the #11 man on the punt coverage team was more important to them than two WRs that MIGHT make some big plays. (sure....might.....because yes, its possible they could suck at what they do and not make the plays you want......but you will never find out about them having them sit on the bench.)

Duke Tobin is the key guy. He has secured good talent for that team......the others are basically just family hangers on.
The Bengals are not the model of success....even though they are currently successful.

This team needs somewhat of a management restructuring....but to do that would be pretty simple.
You have the owner: Haslam
You have a President of Business Operations: Scheiner.
Fine, let them do what they do. That is not the problem.
But the Browns have no one really in control of the Football side of things.
There is none now in this organization.
The last one we had was Mike Holmgren. Banner....who ran the money side of things tried to do both...but he was an absurd asshole for trying.
No, We neee POFO. The Holmgren model could have been right....with a better person in the job.
This POFO would be placed in charge by Haslam. (like Randy did with Holmgren). This POFO would hire (or retain) his own GM....and those two together would hire the HC.
So.....who do you want as POFO? (He would not be GM, he would not be HC)
Someone mentioned Belichick. Would he be ready to turn HC duties over to Josh McDaniels? (though if he does that then he would likely become the POFO of the Pats.....which I think he already is.)
It would be nice to have a Ron Wolf or Bill Polian....but those guys I fear are too long in the tooth.
Tom Dmitroff is GM of the Falcons. Would POFO be a "promotion" from GM. In the setup I am thinking of it would....as the GM would be the subordinate of the POFO.
What about a Bill Parcells? Too old too?
Someone mentioned Rick Spielman? I think he is POFO of the Vikes now.
What about:
Duke Tobin....director of scouting for the Bengals
Mark Konscz...director of scouting for the Panthers
Dan Morgan... same for the Seahawks
What about "has been" HCs: Gruden, soon to be Jeff Fisher.
Who else?

Gipper,
I agree with having a President of Football Operations. You are correct that the CONCEPT of Holmgren was good, but he turned out to be a DISASTROUS hire. Putting a knowledgeable, experienced, dedicated, FOOTBALL guy in that position would serve us well & we could start out the RIGHT way, by his hiring (or retaining) the GM first, then the same for the HC, then Coordinators, etc. & right down through players rather than hiring a HC, THEN the GM. I think your suggestion would ensure all are truly on the same page, working toward a common goal.
Mike
