Who's Your Guess?

The Browns Board

  • See, I already recanted my prediction since we've heard some new names.

    I'm firmly predicting Patricia now

  • Matt Patricia has an aeronautical engineering degree too - seems to be pretty well-rounded as a person.

I think because Romeo failed here isn't good reason to dismiss him. He could be good, as long as he gets more than 1-2 years. He might even keep Flip here.

Agree, but since the magical talent assembled in CLE, not all of which flourished in the NFL, have any of Bill's assistants gone on to be successful HCs? Romeo? Mangini? Weis? McDaniels?

It's just so hard to know where Bill's assistants' X's and O's end and Bill's begin. And in nearly every other aspect of being an HC, Bill is not a great role model.

Saban, Ferentz, O'Brien I'd say may be considered successful. Too early to tell for O'Brien, but he is in the playoffs right now.

McDaniels and possibly Schwartz will get another chance at HC in the not-too-distant future (though Schwartz is more like - off the Jeff Fisher tree probably)

Mangina will probably get another crack at it some day - he may have been better here with time, may be better in the future with his past experiences.

Romeo pretty big head coach failure. Weis is worthless.

I think Bill and Tom Brady can make everybody look better - but a lot of it still depends on the individual. Not sure it really matters what tree they come from if they're good.

  • Should have clarified "NFL HC" as I did in another thread...

Reduces your list to a maybe on O'Brien. Agree that Schwartz's cup of coffee in CLE does not really qualify him, but then neither does his NFL HC record.

Heard Gruden on ESPN this morning. He has no interest. He admitted that he could not get his head around the whole analytics thing and that it would not be a situation in which he would be comfortable.

I don't think it'd be such a problem for him - but I think the bigger problem would be if he went somewhere he'd probably want to be the main man making personnel decisions, which is something we probably aren't offering.

He may have considered a team like the Colts (who are keeping Pagano) - and would have demanded a gross amount of money.

The Gruden, Cowher, Dungy people have always been in fantasy land anyway.

  • doesnt look like it will be gase

Bears OC Adam Gase will have a second interview for the Eagles' head-coaching vacancy this weekend.

Appearing on the radio Wednesday morning, ESPN's Adam Schefter said, "I do believe that Philadelphia is highly interested in Gase. I think the Eagles are in a situation here where if it weren't for their past, it wouldn't surprise me if they already would have made a play to hire Gase." Schefter believes the Eagles are taking their time to feel Gase out after previously rushing into hiring Chip Kelly in 2013. As of now, the Eagles have to be the favorite for Gase.
  • What if the Browns did something truly crazy? For the sake of continuity and not completely changing schemes/players, let's say....

    Promote Flip to HC

    Keep Pettine as DC

and bring in Bernie Kosar as OC

Or keep Flip as OC and have Kosar coach, either way. It would be great to bring in someone who is passionate about the Browns and passionate about winning.

My only concern is that they bring in some real experience.......which was completely missing from the last group....

Everybody....from the FO to the Coaches was new at their perspective jobs and there were zero experienced NFL veterans at any positions....not one....

Really....we need an inside influence that has some knowledge or experience.....But, so far, we have only new guys and rookies again.....(could he repeat the same mistake???)

So....hoping the "GM" or new head coach is that guy....but, based upon the rumored interviews so far, I haven't seen or heard about anybody that would bring that NFL experience to the team....nor have I heard about anybody that wouldnt be looking at a promotion to get here(IE: stepping to the next level, instead of already having the exp)....

Fingers crossed that Jimmy mans up and hires someone who actually might know something and NOT being learning a new job on the fly.....

Well, I can only go by what he said himself: that Gruden said he could not....nor would he want to....get his head around the analytics process.

If by the he really felt "If I went that route I could lose control"....so be it. That may have been an unexpressed intention of his.

I see your point about experience, but I don't think we can realistically expect an experienced coach to come here. Maybe Marrone? I don't know, it is very difficult to completely turn around an organization in 2 years, and I don't see an experienced, successful head coach coming here to get fired. Maybe all of these numbers guys Haslam has been bringing in will take some pressure off of the learning curve for a new coach. Who knows though, knowing the Browns they will find some dark horse candidate no one has heard of and make him (or her?????) the new head coach.

An advisor would be nice, but Chud had experience in both his OCs and in the end he lost the locker room.

I'll take football IQ and communication skills even if it is inexperienced. If those skills can ripple through the staff all the way from the HC to the Asst. Position Coaches, I'd like our chances.

Makes me wonder about analytics role, if any, in the coaching searches at all levels.

Right.....they may or may not hire en experienced coach..

Honestly....Im more worried about his staff, who will be the guys actually "coaching".....ala teaching technique, tackling etc, as well as the coordinators who will be game planning and actually calling the plays.....

Thats where I think we get hurt by lack of experience......and I also think head coach gets way more discussion, but is actually the one coach who really isnt coaching much....(maybe coaching coaches, but not players)....

    So....bring me a veteran staff.....or a veteran GM.....or, ideally....BOTH

Yeah....Chud.....now I think he had the type of staff that really would be helpful for a rookie HC....those types of guys could help avoid a lot of technical, game time and strategic errors...

And, yeah, he lost the locker room.....but I just think Chud wasnt a strong leader and that was the reason.....certainly it wasnt due to him having an experienced staff.....

Analytics for a coach???....possible.....wonder what the variables would be?

  • The San Jose Mercury News reports Bengals OC Hue Jackson is the "clear front-runner" for the 49ers' head-coach job.

Jackson has yet to interview with the 49ers, but the sides are expected to meet Sunday. It sounds like he could be offered the job if everything checks out. Jackson can't accept any offers until the Bengals are eliminated from the postseason. He also has interest from the Browns and Dolphins.

  • I am surprised we have not looked at former Falcons coach Mike Smith ......
