Name That Draft Bust

The Browns Board
16 7 610
  • #1 Jay Berwanger

    #2 Billy Garrett

    #3 Ryan Leaf

  • 1. 1st ever Heisman winner, 1st ever #1 overall draft pick. Never played a down in Pro Football.

    Berwanger?

    2. #1 Overall pick in the draft. QB. Only threw 30 NFL passes. Stuttering problems caused him to be unable to call plays.

Crap... I know we drafted him, but can't think of the name...

    3. #2 overall pick. QB. Many thought he might go #1. Played 25 games. Currently in prison.

    Leaf

    4. #1 overall pick of the Rams. QB. Started one career game.

Terry Baker? Wasn't Baker also a Heisman winner?

    5. #1 overall pick. Defensive End. Injuries shortened his career. Lived up to only half of his nickname.

Not recalling nicknames so there's a couple possibilities that spring to mind, but I'll go with Steve Entman an Indy pick IIRC...

    6. #1 overall pick of an expansion team. QB. Was never given an offensive line to protect him. 23-56 career record as starter.

Feels like a trap question... step around the trap to answer: David Carr

    7. #1 overall pick of an expansion team. QB. Was never given an offensive line to protect him 22-37 career record as starter.

... only to find another trap... seems like too few games to be David, but have no other guess, so... David Carr to be sure one will be right...

    8. #1 overall pick in the draft. Running back that gained only 1144 career yards. Injuries stopped his career.

Been a few through the years... most recent is Carter (Kajana?) drafted by Cinci

    9. #1 overall pick in the draft. QB. Played 3 seasons. Got fat and lazy. 7-18 record as a starter.

    lol... JaMarkus Russell?

    10. #2 overall pick. WR. Played just 15 games. Drugs derailed him.

    Blackmon?

    11. #6 overall pick....of big city team. Defensive End. Recorded -0- career sacks.

    ???

    12. #3 overall pick. QB. Played 4 seasons but only had 5 TD passes and 1 win as starter. He was an asshole.

Except for the ass-hole part sounds Andre' Ware-ish...

    13. #7 overall pick. QB from pass happy college program (which produced another major bust at QB that is not part of this quiz). started just 6 games.

Sounds even more Andre Ware-ish... also won Heisaman and played some in Canada after departing Detroit.

    14. #6 overall pick. RB. His criminal career was more productive than his NFL career.

Friend of Lenny Dykstra? ... not really fair to Lenny...

    15. #4 overall pick. QB. Same could be said about him as said above. 91 of 202 in his career with 3 TDs.

    ???

    16. QB taken in the first round of same draft that produced 3 HOF QBs.....6 overall HOF players. He though was the runt of the litter....starting only 29 career games. From Ohio.

    Blackledge???

    17. QB taken #22 overall. 4-16 record as starter.

    ???

    18. LB taken #5 overall. Started just 7 games.

    ??? Getting awfully vague...

    19. Linebacker taken #21 overall. Started just one game.

    ???

    20. Linebacker taken #30. Recorded 1 career tackle in 3 years.

    ???

Really tailed off there... Maybe after a nap...

As an interesting side note, wasn't Ernie Davis the first black Heisman winner? and he never played a down.

    Still breaks my heart.

I believe that is correct. In fact, checking I see that from 1936 to 1970 only 3 black players won the Heisman: Davis, Mike Garrett and OJ.

The unfortunate thing is that string of Browns could easily have been a lot longer. I didn't do the Willis Adams, Steve Holdens, etc.
