Report: Browns release OC John DeFilippo from contract

    Jan 16 2016, 10:47 AMDan Wilkins

The Cleveland Browns are heading in a new direction on the offensive side of the ball after bringing Hue Jackson aboard as head coach.

Offensive coordinator John DeFilippo has been released from his contract after just one season in the role, according to Adam Caplan of ESPN.

Jackson should look to fill out his coaching staff in the coming days, but indicated Friday he'll maintain play-calling duties and isn't planning to hire another offensive coordinator.

Jackson also served as the offensive play-caller during his one-year stint as the Oakland Raiders' head coach in 2011, overseeing a unit that finished ninth in total yardage.

Former Indianapolis Colts offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton recently met with Jackson about a potential position, and is considering an offer to become the club's assistant head coach/offense, reports Josina Anderson of ESPN.

  • Pretty standard stuff when you hire a new OC

Also Hue doesn't want an OC

  • Yeah, saw that coming. Being an "offensive assistant" is probably considered a demotion to being an offensive coordinator.

Unless your a really offensive assistant who cracks yo mama jokes like they're going outta style.

  • Saw it coming, nonetheless I think he is impressive and will land on his feet and probably work his way up to a HC post.

True... but the other thing it is also considered is employed.

    Good luck to Flip.

  • Flip got trapped in a HC hire with higher expectations in play calling.(like his own) Good on Hue not to drag Flip any longer. Good Luck John DeFilippo!!

  • Good luck , Flip.

  • damn. was hoping Flip was retained and that he desired to stay enough to work under Hue in whatever the new capacity called for.

    good luck (in L.A.) Flip...

  • IMO more important that we retain O'Connell...

We're not. Somebody reported that a couple days ago I think.

  • Flip did some good things but Hue ran some awesome schemes this year. Flip will get a gig somewhere though, he's a good mind as well.

Here it is. It looks certain he's gone. You would think that they would keep him so there is some continuity with JFF. Oh wait.

  • I really like what Flip did.. Even with all of JFF's distractions.. He got good play from the QB's , except Austin 'powerless' Davis.

Assistant Head Coach, Offense. But NO...that's not the same as an Offensive Coordinator? Semantics. Some teams out there that have designated OCs do not have their OCs call plays. Andy Reid calls his own plays....and several others.

  • Good luck to you Flip!

I agree it is semantics if we call him Assistant HC versus OC, but we don't know for sure what the staff will look like.
