How to get a Championship Caliber QB. Well.....lets look how the 4 teams left in the NFL playoffs got their QBs:

Arizona: acquired Carson Palmer in FA (I believe). They went and got a mid 30s semi-proven winner to lead their team.

Denver: acquired Peyton Manning in FA (I believe). They went and got a mid 30s proven winner to lead their team.

Patriots: got lucky with a 6th round pick who became arguably the best QB in history.

Panthers: Got Cam Newton with #1 overall pick.

Now: what do the Browns learn? Anything?

    A. Find a mid 30s proven winner in FA? (OK, good a guy as he is.....Josh McCown is the opposite of a proven winner). What mid 30s proven winners are out there that the Browns can get in FA. None that I know of....unless something odd shakes out in the offseason. Like the Giants cutting Eli Manning or something.

    B. Get lucky and get a low round pick to become great. This is not impossible....but very rare. With 11 picks, maybe the the Browns do the McPick2. It wouldn't hurt or be beyond the realm of possibility.

    C. The Browns use their very high draft pick on a very worthy (Newton/Luck/etc.) candidate. But is that person out there? Most people say the guys coming out this year don't have that in them.

So, what tactic do the Browns use?

Take BOSA and never look. Buy Cousins or draft a QB with the 2nd round pick.

The Browns will use tactic C, but we've been pretty fond of tactic B lately (and it hasn't worked)

Why do we think taking a QB later is a great strategy? Or a QB that his own team presumably wouldn't think worthy of a new contract?

Its about making the best decision with what you have available. There are plenty of 2nd round QBs who have found success. If they deem Goff the guy, go get him. But you better not miss because your jobs on the line.

While many have Goff rating out talent wise as a 2d rounder.....because he is a QB.....and considered one of the 2-3 best......and because QBs are always overvalued......and because a number of teams need a QB.....I suspect that Goff will not last until round 2.....even if he should.

I don't want to look at a QB with a top 5 pick unless he's already "there". Haven't we learned enough from taking project QB's? How many fails at QB do we have to have until we realize you have to build from the inside out? Look how TN almost got Mariota killed this year. They're very lucky nothing more serious happened to him.

It is supposedly set to be the best year in foreverz for DT/DE/OLB type of players. If that's the case, you'd think we'd be safer to take one at #32 since the talent pool is so saturated.

I'm not a big fan of Kiper Jr, but I think it would be absolutely Retard for Dallas to trade their 1st and 2nd rounder for Goff.

Many of the Mock drafts (it's still too early) have four Quarterbacks going in the first round. Example: Goff/Cleve., Wenz/Dallas, Lynch/San Francisco and Connor Cook/ Rams

If this holds true than Cleveland had better take Goff.

Tony Grossing suggests the Browns do what the Redskins did in 2012 and take two QBs. Goff and Cardale Jones. I like going out and getting a free agent but doubt any good ones will be available.

Hue Jackson will be studying his options from now until draft day. After all, taking the wrong guy is a coach killer.

I think we all agree that the quarterback will be the Browns number 1 focus.

I hope Haslam realizes by now how stupid the Manziel pick was and NEVER interferes again!

DAMN THE TORPEDOES! FULL SPEED AHEAD!

yeah i'm not so sure about that. Not 100% convinced he's right for us due to two things....his attitude toward playing here and the fact we don't know yet who our DC is. But overvalued he is not. One of the most athletically gifted and highly skilled collegiate lineman to come out of college in our lifetimes. Whether he maintains his pursuit of his craft remains to be seen.

Defenses are critical to championship teams. All great ones build that before building the offense IMHO. Houston got to go to the playoffs despite not having an offense (nor a top QB). Let's do it right this time. Going after the QB before going after the quality defense has been one long running disaster for the Browns. How about we try to just do it different? It should be interesting how the analytics guys do it. I'm willing to give them a chance regardless of which path they choose as long as we are patient enough to give them a fair multiyear (read that more than 2 shot.

HA! I found this comment under the scout article fairly soon after reading it. From a guy calling himself skillit14, "Don't get me wrong, I've been wanting the next guy on the roster for two seasons.......but I don't want to go "Cleveland Browns" and start throwing high picks at every popular name at the position and never get one."

Why does everyone else in America get that? 😮

Exactly when did we last go QB first and Defense 2nd?

Houston finished 9-7 and was in the weakest division in football. Don't base your strategic plan on an outlier...

As of today, Gip- there's no way Goff is going to last until the second round. Every mock I've seen has the Browns taking Goff @ #2.

This guy will have as much influence on the draft is anybody on any of the teams probably.

Those Cowboy fans are smokin' something if they think they can jump over Browns with just their first and second to take Goff First pick is worth 3,000. Cowboys first, second AND third is only 2590. Add in the qb premium. I've been saying for a couple weeks the 'Pokes will have to offer two firsts and a second to get the Titans interested. I agree with Ag- if we do get jumped, we just sit @ #2 and take Bosa. Tennessee needs a premier LT to keep Mariotta in one piece, and if they drop to #4 they might not get Tunsil- who after reading the bio, compares favorably to Joe Thomas.

Meh 9-7 in the worst division in football, I wouldn't give Houston too much credit for making the playoffs.

But if you say "all great ones build defense first", then I'd disagree.

                                          - Patriots had a bottom 10 defense in Brady's first few years

                                          - Panthers had an awful defense when they drafted Newton

                                          - Broncos managed to get Peyton Manning and consequently invested heavily in their defense

                                          - Cardinals built up their defense and plugged in Palmer

So I guess all it says is there's more than one way to crack an egg.
