I used a crate religiously when I trained my dachshund. He hated it at first and cried pathetically. Now he's both trained and just automatically goes to his crate to sleep and if you say "go to your room"

Yep the crate is the way to go. This isnt my first puppy so I know what's up but he will get his ass beat if he shits behind the couch. They know what's up.
