I think it's common in modern and ancient history that people like to think of themselves as independent. I guess that most groups that splinter off don't have any real pressing need to.

But historically we spent a lot of money and killed a lot of people for the right to change the name of a few million acres of land and hoist a different color flag.

what kind of show? I didn't hear this. In any case, it won't be "top gear". It has to be "top gear", it has to be on the BBC....and it has to be Jeremy, Richard and James.

Well, that's not happening. There's a clean break - jeremy, richard and james are now working for amazon, along with the old director/producer from the BBC days (the 'brains' behind the show) on an as yet unnamed show, due for release in the autumn.

Meanwhile, BBC has drafted in a raft of new presenters, but the main one will be Chris Evans (not captain america, different one), alongside Matt le Blanc, among others.

Why exit? Aside from trying to be cantankerous, is there any legitimate reason you would see for leaving?

Probably to a great extent. I don't mean to sound disloyal but I think I'm realistic enough to understand that here in the US the .01% grew weary of loading a bunch of tax money on a ship and sending it across the Atlantic so the king could battle the French.

  • Seems like a few countries (Germany and France primarily) are paying for the inferior countries like Greece, Portugal, Spain, etc. You have all mostly been historical enemies, and are now acting like a Union. I don't think it will hold for many more years.

In what way is this different to the rich states paying for the 'inferior' states over there? The north and south have been historical enemies and are now acting like a union.

England pays for the 'inferior' countries - wales, scotland, northern ireland - and have historically been enemies.

The only real difference here is the countries willingly entered the union, they weren't conquered militarily by a single entity that imposed their law over them.

  • I'd say not much difference at all. New York California Texas...

So if England drops out of the EU do Northern Ireland Wales and Scotland stay in it?

They are part of our nation, so it would not be England dropping out, it would be the UK. Then I would not be shocked if there was a subsequent referendum from any of those countries where they voted to leave the UK, in order to rejoin the EU. A big part of the scottish independence referendum a couple of years ago was that they'd also join the EU, but separately from the UK, for example.

I think there is a huge difference. The North and South were not ancient enemies. Poor states are not going bankrupt and being threatened with being kicked out of the United States for having huge debts. We don't have a history of going to war with PA or KY. England has been enemies with France for how long? How about Spain? Its a farce and won't work. And rich states don't pay for inferior states. Mississippi is still poor. CA is in debt out its ass. No one bails them out.

  • The last time Britain was at war with either france or spain was no more recent than the US civil war.

  • whoever put the monacle on the british cartoon.....just such a nice touch. So well done. I am rolling.

Wasn't me, but brilliant. On that kind of theme, satwcomic.com is a web comic that deals mainly with scandinavia, but each country/territory is anthropomorphised and you get the UK, russia, USA and a few others turning up from time to time. Like this one:
