Let's Look Seriously at WR

The Browns Board

  • I know college stats don't accurately project ahead. That said, I still have a fascination to see if I can find some things our WR Corps lacked. Let's look at the guys we drafted to play WR:

    Corey Coleman, 5'10" 194 lbs:

    2013 13 G 35 REC 527 YDS 15.1 YPC 2 TDS

    2014 10 G 64 REC 1119 YDS 17.5 YPC 11 TDS

    2015 12 G 74 REC 1363 YDS 18.4 YPC 22 TDS

Greg Pruitt had the same compact build with explosiveness and speed that could score from anywhere on the field. The reason I bring that up is he SHOULD be a lot tougher to press cover than Taylor Gabriel or even Travis Benjamin. For a team that can't score TDs with any degree of regularity from the WR position - 33 TDs in 2 years forecasts some groinal warming in Cleveland. Gary Barnidge has to like the Safety attention he'll attract.

    Rashard Higgins, 6'2" 190 lbs:

    2013 14 G 68 REC 837 YDS 12.3 YPC 6 TDS

    2014 12 G 96 REC 1750 YDS 18.2 YPC 17 TDS

    2015 12 G 75 REC 1062 YDS 14.2 YPC 8 TDS

*** Lost Head Coach Jim McElwain to Florida and QB Garrett Grayson to the NFL before the 2015 season.

    Jordan Payton, 6'1" 212 lbs:

    2013 12 G 38 REC 440 YDS 11.6 YPC 1 TD

    2014 13 G 67 REC 954 YDS 14.2 YPC 7 TDS

    2015 13 G 78 REC 1105 YDS 14.2 YPC 5 TDS

Now that we've been informed a couple black Fran Tarkentons exist - I wouldn't mind seeing a black Brian Brennan built a few inches taller and 25-30 pounds heavier than the original.

    Ricardo Lewis, 6'2" 215 lbs:

    2013 14 G 28 REC 325 YDS 11.6 YPC 2 TDS

    2014 12 G 21 REC 261 YDS 12.4 YPC 3 TDS

    2015 13 G 46 REC 716 YDS 15.6 YPC 3 TDS

Why do I get the feeling he'll be our next Johnson Bademosi on Special Teams? That wouldn't suck but we didn't even have to draft Bademosi or Josh Cribbs. Special Teams was the biggest reason Marlon Moore kept a job here last year (and something tells me he wasn't ever drafted either). I'm sure Hue will find a wrinkle or 2 in the offense that fits Ricardo's size and fitness. For example, he had a big long walk off TD reception against somebody important like LSU in the SEC.

    Seth DeValve, 6'4" 245 lbs:

    2013 9 G 49 REC 527 YDS 10.8 YPC 4 TDS

    2014 3 G 19 REC 243 YDS 12.8 YPC 1 TD

    2015 5 G 33 REC 337 YDS 10.2 YPC 1 TD

Prince Tone looks like his football ahead has really excited our Harvard alumns in the FO. He's got the size and athleticism to be helpful in the red zone where our WR Corps has been pretty non-competitive in the last 2 years.

Don't feel like reading all of this.

Best case scenario: We have Calvin Johnson (Josh Gordon), AJ Green (Terrelle Pryor), and Antonio Brown (Corey Coleman).

Worst case scenario: We have Josh Gordon, Terrelle Pryor and Corey Coleman.

Only been said about three times so far in this thread...

Don't know why we need a million other pages, then.

  • The Browns need to pull off a trade. Michael Flyod could be gotten if the Browns want to pull the trigger. He could be the #1 receiver.

What are you complaining about? You didn't read any of them in the first place.

That said, I'll try. Because Josh Gordon has only played 5 football games since 2013 regardless of how much some guys want to celebrate the endless skipping record. Tommy Chong was as useful to the Cleveland Browns in 2015 as Josh Gordon - but I promise not to forget how talented Gordon looked way back in 2013. In addition, Pryor missed most of last season due to being cut until there was only a couple weeks left where we were informed he wasn't ready for games yet. More specifically, the last regime wasted 1 full year of potential WR development for this guy so in 2016 he's starts out like a rookie WR learning a brand new offense for his new position. Does this put him ahead of the rookie WRs that have started the last 3 years at Wide Receiver? I'm not so sure.

Obviously there's more to discuss than remaining stuck on pause. This regime feels that their WR Corps is pretty important to competing in a passing era and some of us are excited to talk about it.

I like it, but who do they need at what position? There's got to be a move coming, if & when Gordon is allowed back? Nobody's trading for Gordon imo. He should be free (except from himself)

    He related to Marty McFly-od?

  • Pryor will make this roster - he's far too good of an athlete not to.

The rookies will make the roster ahead of the "veteran" guys.. no need to pay more for the same skill set. Hawkins will get traded for a draft pick to some team that has a WR pop something in camp, Hartline/Gabriel/Moore will get cut.

If Gordon isn't training hard now, he won't make the roster if/when he returns.

  • So with Hartline dearly departed here is my new projection:

I am promoting Rashard "Hollywood" Higgins to the first team due his college production, his hair, and his sunglasses.

    WR1: Coleman

    WR2: Higgins

    Slot: Hawkins

    Bench: Pryor, Louis, Payton, Moore

    Cut: Gabriel, Jennings, everybody else.

  • I don't think they keep Hawkins.. slot receiver = Higgins. Starters = Coleman, Pryor.

  • Hey, come on, how about those prison tats?

They all (tattoos) look the same to me.

Describes himself as a possession receiver ... perfect for #2 role.

They kept Chris Tabor as ST coach....and Moore is his boy.....so, though they very well should let go of Moore, I think he stays for just that reason.

Though....to be honest, to quote The Old Man from Pawn Stars...and also my Dad: He seems as useless as tits on a boar hog

  • Moore is our #1 gunner. Fans rarely consider special teams when shaping a roster, but coaches always do.

OK, you are right. I don't see it when it comes to Moore....but maybe it is there.

I see. Yeah I honestly don't see anything special about him. I think they should try Duke for kick returns. Kind of like Sproles.

  • I'm really enjoying the VASTLY different way business is being conducted, so I'm just gonna continue to sit back, enjoy the ride, & see what happens in Browns' Town!

  • Although I agree that Moore will have a chance to make special teams for a spot on the 53; I think he will have to compete for that spot as there will be many rookies trying to take it away from him. If he cannot prove that he is much better at special teams than the rookies; I think, he will be let go in favor of one of them.

  • Radio guys both said that Higgins is making plays on a consistent basis, perhaps more than any other receiver. The other guy who looks good is Terrell Pryor. Apparently Pryor is getting chippy with people and talking some smack. I actually like that. I want somebody on our team to have an edge, and why not him? He has the look of a WR, not a guy trying to PLAY WR. He looks good and feels comfortable. Still don't know if the guy can catch the ball, but I'm guessing he can if he's playing well in OTA's.

Still, I'm not sure why Hartline getting the boot make sense. Apparently he was a very hard worker and somebody that could help set an example for all of the young guys we drafted. I hate to say it, but I'm wondering if this move doesn't help pave the way for Josh Gordon. I know, I know...I shouldn't even bring up his name, but perhaps Gordon is coming back.
