Six Time Finalists in a Decade
-
A comment in another thread led me to start this one. Here in the list of the teams in each sport (since 1900) that have appeared in their leagues Championship game/series at least 6 times in a single decade:
Baseball:
The ONLY time it has been done is by the 1950s Yankees. 8 times in which they were 6-2 in those series.
They had several other decades 20s/30s/40s in which they appeared 5 times, but only the 50s with 6 or more
Football:
1950s Browns 7 appearances 3-4 record.
1960s Packers 6 appearances 5-1 record.
(Only other teams with at least 5 title appearances in a decade: 1940s Bears, 1970s Cowboys)
Basketball:
1960s Celtics 9 appearances and they went 9-0
1960s Lakers 6 appearances....all losses
1980s Lakers 8 appearances 5-3 record
1990s Bulls 6 appearances 6-0 record
2000s Lakers 6 appearances 4-2 record
Hockey:
1920s Ottawa Senators 6 appearances 3-3 record
1930s Toronto Maple Leafs 7 appearances 1-6 record
1940s Toronto Maple Leafs 6 appearances 5-1 record
1950s Montreal Canadiennes 9 appearances 5-4 record
1960s Montreal Canadiennes 6 appearances 5-1 record
1970s Montreal Canadiennes 6 appearances 6-0 record.

On a related note, here are the teams that have won 4 Championships in the course of a single decade. Many of the same teams as above, but not all:
Baseball:
1910s Red Sox
1930s Yankees
1940s Yankees
1950s Yankees
(note...Yankees won 4 straight in 1996-2000, but one came in the 2000s decade, not the 1990s)
Football:
1930s Packers
1940s Bears
1940s Browns
1960s Packers
1970s Steelers
1980s 49ers
Basketball:
1950s Minneapolis Lakers
1960s Celtics
1980s LA Lakers
1990s Bulls
2000s LA Lakers
Hockey:
1940s Maple Leafs
1950s Canadiennes
1960s Maple Leafs
1960s Canadiennes
1970s Canadiennes
1980s NY Islanders
1980s Edmonton Oilers
Note: 2 teams in the 2010s have won 3 titles in their sport, and with just one more title can join the above. Those are the Chicago Blackhawks NHL and the San Francisco Giants MLB.

Here is another bit of whimsical data dump:
Franchises that have won Championships in two different cities:
Baseball:
NY/SF Giants
Brooklyn/LA Dodgers
Phil/Oakland As
Washington Senators/Minnesota Twins
Boston/Milwaukee/Atlanta Braves (one of two teams in all sports to win titles in 3 cities)
Football:
Cleveland/LA/St. Louis Rams.....the other 3 city title winner
Baltimore/Indianapolis Colts
Oakland/LA Raiders
Dallas Texans/Kansas City Chiefs
Basketball:
Minneapolis/LA Lakers
Philadelphia/Golden State Warriors
Syracuse Nationals/Philadelphia 76ers
Hockey:
Quebec Nordiques WHA/Colorado Avalanche
Now....the question is: if the Oklahoma City Thunder win the NBA title, will they join this list. In some areas I have heard that the Sonics franchise is essentially being held "in trust" until such time as a new team would go in up there.
In essence, it would be a similar arrangement as when the Hornets name went back to Charlotte from the now New Orleans Pelicans. In that deal, the records of the Hornets time played in Charlotte have been merged with those of the Bobcats franchise.

And the Pelicans franchise records now only cover their time in New Orleans even though for much of that time they were the Hornets.

However, the same has not yet been done for the Seattle/OKC team. The Thunder franshise records still reflect those of the Sonics from 1968 to 2008.

Nevertheless, if a team were revised in Seattle could those Sonics records go back to Seattle via the Pelicans/Hornets method?
Of course the first franchise to have this happen was the Browns....but unlike Pelicans/Hornets, our records were never transferred or give back....they ALWAYS stayed as the Cleveland Browns.
Now....the way to avoid the issue of whether or not the Championship that the Thunder may win is this franchises second (Seattle won the NBA title in 1979)....is for the Cavs to just go ahead and win the title. Then we wouldn't have to worry about it.

OK, now we don't have to worry about if the Sonics/Thunder will join the list of teams that have won titles in two different cities. Perhaps though they join a short list of teams that have choked away a 3-1 series lead.
Of course, part of that list included the 2007 Cleveland Indians.
