Last Title by Town Summer 2016

Now that the NBA and NHL season have been played , here is the last year that each major league city won a professional sports championship, or for those markets with no titles, the year they first had a major sports franchise there. A couple of questions:
Do we all start now making fun of San Diego as a city because it had/has actually waited longer than Cleveland for a title?
Did anyone notice that Pittsburgh won a title in the NHL. I heard absolutely nothing about it on the sport programming. Maybe a short announcement?

I knew the penguins won but I could not give a shit about hockey. I just hate that Pittsburgh won something. It pales in comparison to the nba championship in my opinion, though, and the ratings back up that that is majority opinion.A couple of questions:

I think we just make fun of the Cubs whose last great shot was ruined by fan Steve Bartman's interference of what should have been a catch leading to a win in the National League Championship in 2003.

In places like Pittsburgh and Buffalo they don't give a shit about basketball.
What ratings are you looking at?

Why is Hockey more popular...even in Detroit?
From what I gather the Monsters have a tremendous following.
I bet you didn't want to see Pittsburgh get another pro championship...their teams have brought to the city 13 championships since 1964 compared to Clevelands now 1.
Congrats to the Cavs...an amazing and unprecedented comeback.
Another thing I'll bet you didn't know...Cleveland has caught up to Pittsburgh at 1 pro basketball championship each!
The Pipers baby! Woooo! LOL

That's just one of many. The finals crush the Stanley Cup consistently. I know you're a Pittsburgh homer but it's not even close

Connie Hawkins in a immortal. The biggest hands in creation. He could hold a basketball it seemed like it was a softball.
That said.....Cleveland has won both a Basketball and a Hockey Championship the same year:
http://theahl.com/2016-playoffs-p202113
A sweep no less.
And Cleveland was and could have been a good hockey town: I go back to the Barons of the AHL....and the fact is the NHL didn't give Cleveland a chance.....they moved the NHL Barons after only two years here. Not for non support but just because the ownership wanted to sell out.
-
And here is another statistic: Cleveland and Pittsburgh are tied with the number of major professional sports championships they have had:
Cleveland: 13 football championships, 2 baseball, 1 basketball 16 total titles
Pittsburgh: 6 football titles, 5 baseball, 1 basketball, 4 hockey 16 total titles.

There is another probably factor on the arena sellout situation: The NHL has 7 teams in Canada. Hockey is the #1 sport in Canada.
Hockey...at best is #4 in the USA.....and is actually probably being given a run for its money by the MLS, particularly in certain markets:
NFL avg. attendance: 68,216
MLB: 30,514
MLS: 21,574
NHL: 17, 455 (half of top ten in attendance are Canadian)
NBA: 17,407.
Take Columbus MLS avg attendance is 16,080. NHL is 15,511.
Truthfully, MLS should start getting better attendance if the sport is growing. It plays on the biggest field and could have the much bigger stadiums, rather than the arenas the NHL plays in.
The NBA is really a success driven attendance league. The Top 5 in the NBA are the Bulls, Cavs, Mavs, Knicks, and Heat (Knicks the exception). The Bottom 5 are the 76ers, Pacers, T-wolves, Nuggets and Kings.

Also Clevelands one recent championship is the greatest sports story of all time. Disney couldn't have written it any better

From what I can gatherl.....these are the facts:
The 2016 Cavaliers are the only team in NBA history to come back to win after having a 3-1 deficit in the Finals. (several other teams have come back from being 3-1 down in earlier series)
The 1942 Toronto Maple Leafs are the only NHL team to come back after being down 3-1 in the Stanley Cup Finals
But...in fact, this may be the greatest comeback in sports history as not only were they down 3-1....they were actually down 3-0...and came back to win.
Four MLB teams have come back to win the World Series after being down 3-1:
1925 Pirates over the Washington Senators
1958 Yankees over the Milwaukee Braves
1968 Tigers over the St. Louis Cardinals
1985 KC Royals over the Cardinals
A few MLB teams have come back from down 3-1 in the ALCS....including the last time in 2007 when the Red Sox beat the Indians.
Only 4 teams in major sports history have come back from 3-0 deficits to win a series:
A. Those 1942 Maple Leafs noted above overcoming the Detroit Redwings
B. The 1975 Islanders over the Penguins
C. The 2004 Red Sox over the Yankees
D. The 2010 Philadelphia Flyers over the Boston Bruins

But did they come back against the team who had the single best record in league history? Who were also defending champion and media darlings? Did any of those teams represent a town who's identity was tied to epic losses? Did any of then have a hometown superstar leave and then come back seeking redemption?

I just gave the basic facts.....you filled in the context.

Context is what makes it the best sports story of all time

Well, the saddest place to be today perhaps is the San Francisco Bay Area. Their teams lost both the NHL Finals and the NBA Finals within days of each other.
And the record that no city has won both the NBA and NHL the same year still holds....though the Bay area could have been the first.
In the past, Six times (6) (now 7) two teams from the NHL and NBA in the same city had a chance to win both summer completed titles....but it never has happened:
2003 NY/NJ: San Antonio Spurs beat the New Jersey Nets. New Jersey Devils beat the Anaheim Ducks
1994 NY: Houston Rockets beat the NY Knicks. NY Rangers beat the Vancouver Canucks
1980 Philly: LA Lakers beat the Philadelphia 76ers. NY Islanders beat Phil. Flyers
1977 Philly: Portland Trailblazers beat the 76ers. Montreal beat the Flyers.
1972 NY: Lakers beat the Knicks, Boston Bruins beat the Rangers
1957: Boston: Celtics beat the St. L. Hawks. Montreal beat the Bruins.
Now: 2016 Bay area: Cleveland Cavs beat Warriors. Pittsburgh Penguins beat Sharks.
-
Wanted to revive this for a couple of reasons.......A. Just so that we can see Cleveland on top again....and B: to comment on the fact that the Cavs have now won a title...and the Indians have the best record in the AL, and many are saying that have a very good chance to win it all.
Here are the times in history that teams from the same city won both the NBA and the MLB titles:
2002 The LA Lakers and the LA/Anaheim Angels won the NBA and the MLB
1988 The LA Lakers and the LA Dodgers won NBA and MLB titles
and that is it.
The last time a city won titles in any 2 different sports in the same year was 2004 where the Red Sox and the Patriots won MLB and NFL titles. Before that was that 2002 Laker/Angel year....and then in 2000 the New Jersey Devils and the Yankees won for the NYC area.
And Just FYI.....Cleveland area teams twice in the past won titles in the same year: 1920 the Indians won the WS and the Akron Pros won the NFL title. And in 1948 the Indians won the WS and the Browns won the AAFC title.

I go by Championships I can enjoy. I don't care who won in 1945.
So, as a Clevelander born in 1965, my teams have 1.
And I'm still celebrating!
