Wishful thinking, NFL's rushing leader
-
The thing is, it seems, in this day and age, having the great running back is no assurance of having a good team. The Vikings have been mediocre in Adrian Peterson's tenure there. Not having a decent QB until perhaps Bridgewater came along hurt their playoff chances. Marshawn Lynch certainly an excellent runner....but not until Russell Wilson showed up did the Seahawks make noise in the playoffs.
The Patriots seem to win without ever having a prime time RB.
Sure, a team should have it all: great QB, great RB, good WRs...and obviously a good defense to compete for titles.
Do our QBs, RBs, WRs etc. match up to quality? Not so far.

Wrong the Cards drafted him last year. Brian Johnson kiddo.Tenn. drafted him to compliment Mariota.

Anyone know what a power sweep is?
Answer: No. Not any more.
Those days of slow defensive linemen and linebackers are long gone.
That and rules changes to protect the QB and receivers while hindering DB's have made the NFL a passing league. And it HAD to become a passing league...because it was getting too hard to move the ball on the ground.
An NFL of constant punting by both teams was not going to be enjoyable to the masses.
As has been said, the Patriots have won super bowls with worn out RB's. (and I'm not suggesting that there's no need for a good RB)
Joe Thomas has said it, 'Even if you're lucky enough to play for a good team, capable of winning, so many times it comes down to a two minute drill drive to win the game. And you're NOT going to be able to run yourself down the field.'
Even back in 1964, when we won the Championship with Jim Brown, it was 3 TD passes from Frank Ryan to Gary Collins that beat the Colts. (and a game of good Browns defense)

So Jim's 114 rushing contributed nothing? How many of the three TDs were off play action?
Where 300 yd passing games were once exceptional in the 60's, they are now the standard for a "successful" winning effort. It is without doubt the emphasis in today's NFL is on the passing game. Nonetheless the ability to run the ball effectively is important to the success of most championship teams... be it to set up PAPs or salt away games late.

Rookie David Johnson had a 4.6 per carry average and was the NFL's 35th best in total yards with 581. Not bad but.................................... Rookie Todd Gurley had 4.8 yds per carry and was 3rd NFL best with 1106 yards. Try again.

Johnson started after Chris Johnson got hurt in week 10. If David Johnson starts as much as Girlyman he gets more. Oh and btw, Johnson has a jersey in the hof already.Rookie David Johnson had a 4.6 per carry average and was the NFL's 35th best in total yards with 581.
