Me thinks ever since Johnny Manziel chose partying over football - you seem like you don't want any of our other first round draft picks to succeed either. You're already cornering yourself into hoping you're right about Henry being better than anything we got before him. It's not Corey Coleman's fault that Manziel and his best friend (Gordon) would rather party than play pro football.

Sorry but you are wrong. I've liked Henry well before JM screwed this up. And last year my favorite player I hoped we would get was Kansas State's WR Tyler Lockett who has done well for Seattle. I don't hate our picks and I do hope they do well. It's just that I thought Henry could improve our running game to control the ball like we say we want to do better than anyone we have on the roster and provide that extra blocker in the backfield that everyone was running over to get to our QB last year.

Avoiding your own context again. You said Henry was going to be better than anything we got before him. We received Corey Coleman + a 3rd round pick this year + a 2nd round pick next year from moving back to draft Coleman. It's more than 1 player.

I had nothing to do with why Henry wasn't drafted in round 1. I can only hold you to your comment that a guy sharing reps with DeMarco Murray is way better than trading back for Coleman plus the 2 players we're getting for doing so.

Flawed logic there. It has nothing to do with the picks we acquired for trading back. It only has to do with Coleman and Ogbah, our two picks taken before Henry came off the board. I had no problem with Coleman because I said even the year before we needed major help at WR, which is why I was disappointed that Seattle traded up in front of us (and others) to get my favorite, Tyler Lockett. But I definitely wanted Henry before Ogbah because it does no good to have a WR if the QB gets sacked because the RB just can't pick up the blocks and we have no real short yardage 3rd down back. I just see Henry as being a greater contributor to Tenn. than I do Coleman to us this coming year. Now if we had gotten both, they would have been complimentary to one another, making both better in our pretty bad offense from last year.

So you agree that WR was a big need this year. Okay, and we drafted one that scored 20 TDs en route to winning the Biletnekoff Award as the Nation's best WR.

As for your part in bold above - are you sure the only RB in the draft or free agency that was capable of improving our backfield pass protection was Henry? Keep in mind, Terrell Watson that Hue brought here from Cincy is a compact 6'1" 242 lb frame if he'd rather keep backs in to block rather than utilize a Gio Bernard or Duke Johnson in space. Marshall Faulk was a great blocker but what was the best way to bury a blitz with him as a blocker or a receiver space? He went over 1000 yards receiving the first year St Louis made the Superbowl.

Crow was pretty good at blitz p/u's last year and Duke was even better.

  • My point is that one very large, tough RB named Henry has all the skills of the rest of our RB wrapped up in one package. I encourage you to tape the Tenn. games this year to see how that plays out for them. Coleman will prove to be an excellent pick, but he will have limited impact on the offense in comparison to an all around horse like Henry. And certainly we could have had Henry as #2. Hopefully Ogbah will prove out to be an impact player for the D they way I expect Henry to have an impact on the Tenn. O. I'm just sorry we didn't get another Jim Brown. He has that potential IMO.

Oh well, on to the 4-3 and Myles Garrett! 😆

I'm kind of surprised he went as low as 45th overall to be honest. Maybe he'll be like Thurman Thomas who was pissed he wasn't better thought of than #34 overall, which was why he chose to wear #34. I don't have anything against him per say - I was just trying to tell you our most glaring weakness offensively was the WR Corps especially since the only WR with more than 2 TD receptions departed via free agency. We had a junior varsity WR Corps before the draft.

I thought Baltimore would take Henry especially since Forsett was injured last year while the Rats had the fewest rushing attempts in team history with 383. That said, Ozzie Newsome appeared to be more interested in getting Trent Richardson via free agency and then drafting the 5'10" 215 lb Kenneth Dixon from LSU with their last of 5 picks in round 4 as well as the 5'11" 205 lb Keenan Reynolds from Navy in round 6 temporarily listed as a RB.

TN drafted these 3 players before Henry so they were even passing him up as late as #43 (meaning they agreed with us addressing higher priorities):

    Jack Conklin OT 8th overall

    Kevin Dodd DE 33rd overall

    Austin Johnson DT 43rd overall

  • There is no doubt Tenn. needed to address their line first and I know the arguments for WR with us (I was one calling for them last year). Just sayin' watch him as the season roles along and see what he does. If I'm wrong I will admit it. But my fear is the Browns missed an opportunity once again that many will decry later on, especially if he proves to be the key in us losing to them this year. Now that would hurt.

  • On Henry... awful lot of views out there that he simply lacks the lateral movement NFL RBs need to be successful. We shall see... but at least he looks like he'll be available.

Amazing how fast BUF went from a flush stable of RBs to "who's left?"

  • A one dimensional back can be found much later. To be honest, Elliott would have made sense for the browns - an offensive star that would be effective in this offensive system, and the next in two years, and then the next two years after that, etc. but a big power back that's not so much with the breakaway speed or the catchy catchy has limited worth in the NFL.

Murray was made by the Dallas Oline. He was horrible at Philly in comparison. He is also very small in comparison to Henry who will prove to be the better pass blocker for Mariota. Henry is NOT the typical Bama back. But will Coleman be another Baylor WR for us? Sure haven't seen much of our previous one on the field. See what happens when you try to categorize a player based on past experience with a same position player you had from the same school? LOL! 😆

Speaking of 😆 - this might be a good time to inform you Gordon got thrown out of Baylor. His last college team was Utah. Gordon suited up just as many times for Cleveland in 2015 as he did for Utah. I'd rather discuss WRs that didn't put their Baylor scholarships "Up in Smoke." There's a couple doing pretty good like Kendall Wright for TN, when healthy, and Terrence Williams for Dallas. They're actually wearing an NFL uniform on Sundays.

I don't think Henry will be a bad player per say; but the context you selected was he'll be better than anything we drafted ahead of him. I'm reminding you that in moving back to select Corey Coleman the Browns also picked up a 3rd round pick in this year's draft and a second round pick in next year's draft. That's 3 guys right?

BTW, Crowell was the Freshman of the Year in the SEC when he ran the ball for GA. As I said, he averaged between 5.2 and 5.4 yards per carry in the first half of his rookie year here. With Crow and Duke, RB didn't need to be upgraded nearly as much as WR.

I live in TN and listen to their radio show daily. Their offensive line has been atrocious. Remember how bad we were at sacking QBs last year? Do you remember how many we got against TN? I've seen a lot of Henry living only 60-65 North of the Bama border. They're on tv every week and I rarely see the SEC challenging Bama to get a good enough read on if it's him being terrific or if it's just him DeMarco Murraying himself (as you put it above) behind a line that outclasses every opponent every week. When that unfolds, it can mask some imperfections of a RB - like running straight up with a sloppy pad height. We've seen it for a while now. Jax drafted Yeldon; but they don't seem satisfied. We drafted Richardson; who's on his 4th team already. Ingram has been the most successful RB from that program in recent years but his rock quarry for hands limits him and his reps some. It also took Ingram a while to emerge. No superstars.

Me thinks ever since Johnny Manziel chose partying over football - you seem like you don't want any of our other first round draft picks to succeed either. Bama's OL isn't that good. In fact, when A&M played them last year (it was the 6th or 7th game), they were near the bottom of the FBS in negative plays. Of course, that was before Henry really came on in earnest.

I am interested to see him but I agree he has pretty poor footwork (and there's a video from Titans mini camp proving that).

The National Champions rushed for 2,999 yards and here's what some of their RBs did before logic leads us to the guy that had a lot of negative plays:

    Derrick Henry 5.6 ypc

    Kenyan Drake 5.3 ypc

    Bo Scarbrough 5.8 ypc

The QB who touched the ball on every offensive play (or 98% of them):

    Jake Coker 0.9 ypc

They're not winning National Championships and consistently getting RBs drafted up in rounds 1 and 2 because they're pedestrian at run blocking over the years. They ran on Michigan State better than anyone I've seen including Ohio State last year.

You need to go back and review a few of his long distance TD's in which DB's improperly assumed exactly what you assume, no breakaway speed. For some strange reason they always found themselves trailing him to the endzone. Go figure.

    What a slow poke!

Not convinced yet? Then just watch the first two here.

  • Henry will be just fine in Tenn. it's just whos left on the branch riding pine collecting $$. The browns need Murray.

  • Henry went to the NFL team that enjoyed the 6'3" Eddie George. He also had a pretty good combine so maybe he went to the right situation at #45 overall. I still wouldn't have taken him at 15 or 32 for our situation. We had bigger needs in emptier cupboards.

Agreed.. Advantage Zeke with Dallas OL over Titians also. Zeke better cutting feet with balance. Watching Henry's straight up body attack, straight forward reminds me of my old vibrating football game table. Vibrate to sideline & never cut it up field 😮 Damn I wish that vibrating table had remote controls..These kids today are so spoiled 😛

Yep, poor lil guy was only allowed to use one arm to shed those big ole MSU DE's to help him find his way up field near the sidelines. I downright feel sorry for him. 😛

  • Ag, I think you are in love haha.

Big, upright backs tend to take such a beating that they don't last. I wish the kid the best but I just don't see anything other than a between the tackles grinder who runs upright. A recipe to get bludgeoned.

Eric Dickerson, John Riggins, Larry Csonka-rest my case.

Maybe even throw in Jim Brown for those who have forgotten how he ran over people in a long career.

  • Call us when one of those Alabama backs do well in the NFL. They have had one fairly good one in Shaun Alexander, and once upon a time Tony Nathan was a good all purpose back. By the end of his career Eddie Lacy may be about in the Alexander level.

But, to be fair, when you have produced the likes of Namath, Stabler, Starr, Newsome, John Hannah, Bob Baumhauer and Dwight Stephenson...you have done all right on the offesive side of the ball.

So we comparing Henry to Hall of Famer exceptions or the tons of other guys who washed out who were tall backs who ran through the line upright?
