Pocket Passing

  • Ya know who I think the best pocket passer was? John Elway.

He would drop back there in the pocket and sling it.

But he wouldn't stay back there until the walls caved in around him. He had his internal clock and when it struck 'whatever' he would look around and escape while the gettin' was good.

Too much is made of 'the QB has to trust his line and stay in the pocket'. (bullshit - don't go down with the friggin' ship)

When the QB like an Elway, or an RG3, slides out of the pocket the LB'er in front of him turns into a man in no mans land. Does he attack the QB so that the receiver behind him is wide open? Or does he stay back and let the QB run?

I hate to use Manziel to make a point (cos he's a dumb ass punk) but everyone was telling him to stay in the pocket. But what I saw him do, in that one game that he played in where it wasn't a mockery, was drop back to pass....tick tick...escape through the wormhole and be drifting along the LOS making the LB'er shit his pants.

Let's take the Kosar / Elway matchups.

I love Kosar. He's every bit as good as Elway at being a QB if not better.......but Elway had that extra dimension. If nobody was open he could escape into a clear area buying time and burning the D with a completion......or he'd break your back by running for the first down.

RG3 could be an Elway type player.

He just has to drop back to pass like he's a pocket passer and be good at it...but also be allowed to find the escape route to extend the play. - When an athletic QB is out in the open, the D is under extreme pressure. Don't force it. Throw it away if it's not to be. Or run and slide. But don't sit there in the pocket and wait for it to collapse on you. my 2 cents

    Wait...what?

If Elway had an extra dimension then wouldn't that make Elway better?

RG3 could be an Elway type player.

No he cant. No more than he could turn white.

If Ghoolie read that shit he'd rub your nose in it. lol!

Terry Bradshaw was a better pocket passer and has 4 rings to Elways 2

    Fuck the squeelers.

Besides, Dan Marino was a great pocket passer and has zero SB's to show for it.

Back in the El wha days, (was that a flap jacket or bulletproof-vest) players were forced to wear every pad including thigh & knee. Not today, speed matters. R.Wilson best friend is how to use the sidelines as your friend. RG3 used it once at TB & still got Hit..RG3 less 2 yrs. of live action has got to process it in a game of inches quicker. With a OL like ours, Its going to take quick choices. RG3 has 3 choices Hand-off, Run Or Pass. 2 more our Protect it & don't Hold it in pocket..My biggest hope is RG3 seeing 16 games, but i hope it happens for the guy..

Yeah, true. Marino was great. And he was a pocket QB. But like Kosar, he couldn't be anywhere BUT the pocket.

I just don't want my athletic QB to be totally thwarted from using his athleticism. But pretty much as a last resort.

few days, and stink them out....

Dan Fouts, Gip. Need to add fouts to that list.

personally, I would add Phil Robertson, who never played

    in the NFL.

He started in college ahead of Bradshaw.... 🙂

Why the hell would we list him here, whoever he is.

He started in college ahead of Bradshaw.... 🙂

Oh, well, that makes him just great. If he was that good, then why didn't he play in the NFL?

Yea, pretty good. We could probably come up with another dozen really good ones. Warren Moon. Bert Jones.
