Discuss. I'm for it. And to head you off at the pass I've always been for it whether a democrat or Republican is in office

It's cheaper per capita and everybody has access to healthcare. I don't get why this didn't happen decades ago.

        Hell. No. This isn't Europe.

Care to elaborate on why, exactly, youre against it? Apparently Trump himself is for it.

Just kidding. Actually I think it would be a great idea. I don't know how it will happen though. It would take huge effort to get it accomplished with the Insurance companies fighting tooth and nail, not to mention the Pharm companies, etc. Not to mention the doctors would take a huge pay cut I would imagine. I know it works well in Japan. I've heard some bad stories out of Canada like waiting times for surgeries, etc.

You're right it would take a huge effort. And it would take some serious wheeling and dealing which Trump, alone among u.s. Presidents in my life, is well suited to. If anyone can make those deals, on paper at least, it's him.

As I touched on in another thread, he's just going to be able to rely on a cult of personality like President Obama to cover his ineffectiveness. He's going to have to pull a Steve Jobs and exploit his reality distortion field and get things done or he will be crucified by the followers of the aforementioned former president. If he made the deals and got that done, even if he did nothing else, history would remember him kindly.

I will assume that people who are born into a system will know no other reality.

I've experienced the Canadian Healthcare System and if everyone in America, even those on the Dole, was forced to all of a sudden accept that as the standard they would be extremely upset.

Even if Trump is for it, we'll never get socialized healthcare with the current house and senate.

For example my health insurance is extremely expensive here but I can call the Cleveland Clinic and get an appointment today for some of the finest specialists in the world. Not only do those specialist not exist north of the Border but you wait your ass off for any little thing. I think Americans who are used to quicker service would be extremely upset about being told if there's a month or two wait for relatively minor services. My friends who work in the hospital in Cleveland say there are many Canadians but come in especially for orthopedic surgery and pay for it rather than to wait the huge amounts of time it would take in Canada. Are saxophone player fell down the steps and thought he broke his leg in Hamilton Ontario. We took him to the hospital and they said that the doctor would see him Monday when he came to work. That's right. The hospital had one Doctor and he didn't work weekends. Took a guitar player to a clinic which was a few hour ordeal and results wouldn't be available for a long long time. The doctor Shrugged his shoulders and said you're not in America now.

As I recalled at one point in time there were more MRI machines in Greater Cleveland then there were in Canada.

That being said would Americans be better off not running to a doctor every time they sneeze? Could be. And will most ailments just take care of themselves with or without medical care ? Probably. Just saying that a sudden shift in service would come as a shock to most.

This is why I said he needs to pull a Steve Jobs and just force things through. There's always going to be obstructionism in government.

You can't put five human beings in a room and get them to agree fully on anything.

Of course that no guts no glory ramming through of legislation would work with gun control as well.

Yes yes gun control. I get it. It's the difference between actually helping people and just making legislation for a political victory. The problem with gun control is that the genie is already out of the bottle. There's enough guns on the streets to arm all the criminals forever. Legislation can't make those disappear

That's the major sticking point on gun control indeed. You would need to buy back the legally owned guns, and that would be costly but fine, and then you'd need to find basically *all* of the guns...somehow.

I'm just saying that if the government decided that we'd be better off if we were like England that once the generation that lived in and of the Second Amendment moved along those born into a gun-free Society wouldn't know any difference. Same with medicine. If you are born and raised in a system that will be your reality.

Chris, you live in a place with socialized medicine. What is the good and bad? What are the wait times like? Preventative care readily accessible? How hard is it to get a specialist?

Well the obvious good is that there's no being charged out the wazoo for anything, and that's a pretty big one. In terms of medication, prescriptions are charged at a flat rate of £8.40 or something like that, whatever you have done, so if that cancer medication costs thousands, you only pay £8.

I've fortunately never had to see a specialist so I can't comment - the only time I have done so is through private (I have it at work so why not).

Wait times can be frustrating but it's largely a product of dumb people going in when they have the sniffles or a boo boo. In every 'ER' there's a triage nurse who decides how severe your case is, and if it's something vaguely serious you're seen pretty much right away. If you're take little timmy because he fell and is crying, get ready for a long wait.

Seeing a GP (same name over there? family doctor guy?) can take a while, they're pretty understaffed.

Preventative care - I guess it depends what's being prevented, but generally things get fixed early. There's a recognition that early treatment is most cost effective than a life time of 'symptom management'.

To be honest, I wouldn't swap it for paying thousands of pounds a year for private health insurance. If you're ill you get treated, if you are injured you get fixed, all in a timely fashion.

That must be it. Every single time I've been to a doctor or hospital I've been 'one of the lucky ones'.

Perhaps I should just dump a bunch of scare stories about privatised health care if you think it will change someone's mind?

I pay a couple of hundred bucks for mediare and supplemental insurance. Got my new knee,

Did pay about 140 bucks for phys therapy than ran over three sessions of an hour each.

...because having a bad knee for much of my life, had muscle adaptation work to do.. for

walking normally up stairs. I used to always walk backwards down stairs , a lot less pain, more stability.

Our health care system has flaws, but it's the best in the world. Welfare patients in surgery

get the same care as somebody with a really great medical insurance. And my care, like everybody

else's, was the best and most wonderful in the world. Not every hostipal is outstanding, The food

was really good, nurses were sweethearts but busy... had the best knee surgeon - renowned local expert,

                                          anesthesiiologits were great...

I'm sure there are good things about England's hc system, but it has very serious problems. I'm glad you

                                          haven't experienced those, Chris.
