My Touriffic 2017 Browns Mock Draft

The Browns Board

  • Thanks for putting that together Tour! Great read full of exciting ideas...

I LOVE the thought of OJ Howard at #12 because he can line up at any WR or TE spot for the mismatch we need. He's improved his blocking enough for a traditional TE role for the occasions that will be warranted. As much as I enjoyed Barnidge prior to his contract extension -the 31 year old version was much more pedestrian while we await the 32 year old version in 2017. He'll be okay but the 4.5 speed on the 6-6 target with an ideal catch radius showcased game changer/X-factor material in a National Championship W over Clemson 2 years ago (5 receptions for over 200 yards and 2 TDs - could even help a QB like Coker so...)

You and I swim against the current on Chad Kelly as does his Uncle Jim (who wasn't always a great kid when he first arrived in Buffalo in comparison to the community guy he turned into). Why do we do it? Look at what he did vrs Bama 2 years ago when his go-to WR isn't even good enough to start for the Vikings. He also gave Bama a good game this year until he made some errors and a bad decision late in the game that would have been well excused and alibi'd if his last name was Trubisky if ya know what I mean. All that said, I get why he has critics for his character and/or his recent injury history. You've carefully placed him in a round where it won't hurt us anywhere near as bad as taking a brat like Manziel up in round 1.

I'm glad the mods aren't merging these Mock Drafts. They know this is the time of year to talk about the draft. They probably also know the amount of time and passion it takes people to put stuff together like this. I'd rather have them merge all the Jerry Springer bullshit into a Romper Room Forum for the few adults that miss being in 2nd Grade.

  • As much as I like Howard, if Allen or Foster falls to us.................in a heartbeat.

Otherwise I'd take DT Brantley @ 33 if there. We need one more strong DL in the middle and there are tons more safeties this year for a later pickup.

Me, too... I just feel the #2-11 teams will feel the same way as well, that's why OJH is Player X for me... and he is only there if a couple 2-11 teams take QBs and//or RBs.

Yup... helluva 2015... Read a factoid that Chad is the only SEC QB to post W's vs. Bama, LSU and Auburn (IIRC) in a single season in a long time.

Granted that construct eliminates some good QBs from contention (except LSU who has been a "good QB" away from being Nat. Champs seemingly forever), but it still sounds impressive.

  • Mods... feel free to merge with the other members' mocks, if you must. Just, please, not with the "Fantasy" thread and all those sims...

This is going to look very similar to my effort for the BrownsBoard collective mock excepting there's no one else to steal a couple of my prospects a few, or in one case one, picks ahead of me. But just to be sure NFL teams don't do the same, I've adjusted a few picks...

1.01 Booker T and my MG... Myles Garrett - DE - TAMU for the purists out there...

Simply put the Best prospect in the draft. While nothing is ever 100% there's no one closer to it in this draft.

    Green Onions for everybody!

    1.12 Impact player X - Y - Z University

Whichever other "impact player" is pushed down to us by teams overdrafting QBs or RBs.... I honestly do not know who it will be, but OJH looks to be the most likely in this defense dominated draft, so I will go officially with him as my pick... O.J. Howard - TE - BAMA... and I'd be fine with him.

But I'd also be fine with Thomas or Allen or Foster or Reddick or... and do not get upset if I did not mention your top FS or SS or CB... I simply do not see them being here.

What if your fav at 12 is a QB or RB or other DT, you ask? Then yeah, get upset, because there is not one I would draft here.

2.01 Josh Jones - SS - NC St.

My favorite "aggressor" in the entire draft. Brings "attytude" to our 2ndary with some to spare. Kid will be putty in Gregg Williams' hands... hairy putty, cause he'll have Gregg pulling out some of his own for a while, but in the end we'll an SS that will, also, revive our once proud SS tradition.

Second best SS in the draft, but no way are we getting Adams, so here is your consolation prize.

I love this quote from his profile...

"This guy would just as soon hit you as look at you on the football field." - AFC defensive backs coach

    2.20 Marcus Williams - FS - Utah

I know Budda is supposed to be the FS in Round 2... that he is the popular choice, but to get him I'd have to spend 2.01 on him... and I am greedy... I want Josh Jones and Marcus. So you take the 2nd best SS before you take the number 3 or 4 FS, depending on the ranking you use.

The more I watch Marcus, the more I love him. And when I recently saw that he only turned 20 after the start of the 2016 season, that clinched it for me. Already shows good FS balance vs. run and pass. Continued maturation of both mind and body are expected... and when they do our proud FS tradition will be reborn.

For those counting... yes, that's two reborn traditions in a single draft...

    3.01 Sidney Jones - CB - Washington

I hope his achilles drops him this far. If it does, then you have to catch this falling knife. Achilles injuries are not once what they were, and even should we have to redshirt him for a season, this kid is worth the wait.

    4.01 Taywan Taylor - WR - WKU

I was able to nab TT at the top of the 5th in the Board Mock... I do not see him lasting that long in real life and the kid is a game changer. He will electrify our return games... both of them... while we figure out how to use him on Offense (here's a hint Hue... look at KC's use of Tyreek Hill). While Taylor lacks Hill's blazing speed he has elite "elusivity". Slot seems a natural place to start with delayed crosses, also stacks, but also think backfield in obvious passing situations.

Note: This is the slot where I nabbed UH's Bowser (OLB) in our mock... and I'd do that again, but no way he makes it this late. I doubt he even makes it out of the 2nd. And an ILB, Northwestern's Walker, was queued up here as well on my board, but just as he was nabbed to end the 3rd, so too will he not fall this far. And I am not sure Taywan makes it to me here, but odds are much better that he might.

    5.01 Shaquille Griffin - CB - UCF

Raw kid with all the tools to play CB in the NFL. How do I know? When the biggest knock on you is that WRs can run away from you and you post a sub 4.4 at the Combine... your problem can be corrected.

This kid is a strong, natural press corner. Beyond that he needs technical work... the stuff that can be taught and/or refined... turns, focus/eye discipline... his hips are already pretty good. What he has can't be taught... speed, leaping, size and love of contact.

Hands? Also good... at least good enough to haul six picks in over the past two seasons at UCF.

5.32 Chad Kelly - QB - Ole Miss

Waited too long in our Board Mock to tab my QB in this draft and lost him in the 5th round Compensatories. I don't want Sashi to make the same mistake after he reads this.

And when I said in our mock that I'd hire Uncle Jim as a Special Assistant, I was not kidding. Chad's Dad, too, if that is what it takes to keep Chad focused.

If the kid does focus on rehabbing his knee and finding the non-chemically enhanced joys of life, then he will be the steal of this draft. There's not a better arm or football IQ in this draft at the position than Tour's Official 2017 Darkhorse QB possesses.

    5.38 Jamaar Williams - RB - BYU

Although the issues are similar there is a whole different level of trouble here as compared to Chad. The knee is further in the past. The "team violations" are Mormon style, i.e., he had a drink and he had a girl in his room. Color me unconcerned...

What there is here is Day 2 talent pushed deep into Day 3. The kid runs with a blend of speed, moves and power that assure him of a roster spot in the NFL. Great insurance on the cheap for Crow getting signed away or playing below his customary enthusiasm level due to his contract.

6.01 Robert Davis - WR - Georgia St.

Kind of a small-school, hidden gem here. Great size at 6'3, 219 and speed for his size, 4.4 with good hands. The story is that both his HS and college teams were run-oriented so he has never been showcased. Don't see him being showcased in the NFL either, but a solid #2 is not out of the question once some of the raw is knocked off of him and polish applied.

    6.04 Justin Senior - OT/OG - Mississippi St. U.

Told cal in his mock value OL are virtually non-existent on Day 3... here is my one exception... and in truth I am not convinced he is an exception. He measured like shit at the Combine, but he was an invitee. More importantly something about his tape registered in my melon that made his poor Combine numbers surprise me. I think he has a decent chance to be a backup swingman for our OL... something we can use... and maybe develop into more with time and a little body sculpting. Meanwhile I'd expect him to be a dependably healthy sub since he'd been a durable, three-year starter at MSU missing only one game.

And this ^^lies the reasoning that Mocks our fine..BUT this is where the experts that get paid to do this such as GM's & pro scouting takes over & makes a mess out of Mock Drafts..IMHO..Howard,Thomas,Allen,Hooker,Adams,Lattimore,Foster all off board by 12. I think even the Fournette's/Cook's of the world, 1 of Mike Williams,Cory Davis may slide around 12. Reddick & Barnett & Mitch,Teez Tabor or Humprhey may even come into play..Good Luck "pinning the tail on the donkey" on this Draft..

  • Could be gum, but someone is going to reach for the top QB on their board...

Someone else is going to see Fournette as their battering ram for the next decade...

And a third team will overrate a CB not named Latimore into the top ten...

It just happens too damn often to not happen at the end of April... and that means one of the players we, as in you and I, value will be there at 12...

I'll bet you a cheesesteak sammie on it... 😉 Geno's or Pat's? Hell... make it one from each...

  • Isn't DeValve supposed to be our future TE?

wouldnt hold my breathe on that one......future role player maybe.......

#4 of the glorious four fourths....not to be mistaken with the 4 WR's.....lots of 4's......and 4ths.....

Some other famous future fourths include our future 4th WR...Ricardo Louis.....our future SS....Kindred......our future OLB Schobert....

Out of the lot, I see some talent that could stick in future back up roles.....or future ST stars......or future situational players....

  • I think that about sums it up...

Seth has real, pass-catching, mismatch-up creating potential, but not seeing him as an early down, blocking TE unless it's winged off the #1 TE in an overloaded, 2 TE set where he can either double with the other TE or release to the third level.

Now if he comes into TC with 10# of added muscle at 255? Then I might have to rethink things...

... but then again... Princeton... 🥷

Have had Tony's more than few times... folks used to live in the Concord Square complex.

But I prefer to go up "the hill" to Stancatos... their dbl sausage and mushroom will set you free.

  • Thanks man, I'll have to try them sometimes.

You be welcome, homie... great buffet, too.

One proviso on their pizza... the crust is more flakey than doughy... kinda Chicago, deep-dish flakey... so it's a bit on an acquired taste. But their sauce is great... and their sausage? Fahgeddabowdit...

  • Chad Kelly only lasted 5 minutes into the throwing portion of Ole Miss' pro day before suffering a hand injury. Will be interested to see what was up.
