The most correct answer is we don't know.
But "stretching" is more accurate of a word than "expanding" Expanding implies adding more to it - like air to a baloon.
I think a good way to describe it is:
- You have a ruler that goes from minus infinity to infinity with a mark every 1"
- The marks are all moving further apart from each other
The ruler is not expanding into anything, the marks on the ruler are just expanding on the ruler into infinity.
