  • That's a moving story. Great luck for him. I hope he makes it to a superbowl !

  • Great story, he will value his time in the NFL more than most. That should bring out the very best in him.

  • This sounds like an Eric Wright story.

  • I had a Sporting News draft mag that had him listed as a first-second rounder. Obviously, there were things that made his stock drop immensly and those magazines are way outdated by the time of the actual draft, but for them to have him rated as the #4 overall CB says something about his ability. Possibly a steal?!?!

  • is his speed still a problem or did he improve that?

  • I've got a good feeling about our DB depth. Actually, like Shep mentioned in another post...I've got a good feeling about our depth as a whole. No we aren't stacked at every position. We're solid at just about every position. I can't recall having this feeling before...? Strange.

  • we tried the few superstars with mediocrre to bad depth......obviously here we are rebuilding...again.

i like the sound of solid depth all around.....having more contributors can be nothing but good.

"Solid at every position" sounds so much like Belicheck's Pats after he signed like a thousand "mid level" free agents to rebuild his team... and won a Super Bowl almost immediately. Their theory downplays superstars (still tough to name WRs and RBs on that first chamionship team) in favor of good, sound, smart, motivated football players.

I think if Mangini had stayed in New York, that team would have become a consistent winner. Ratliff would've been his Brady, too.

What's interesting is that every new guy is an upgrade over the old guy: Right now, Bowens is much better than McGinest (but so am I). Barton is way better than Andra Davis (but so am I). Coleman is better than the gaping hole left by Robaire Smith, and probably better than a healthy Robaire Smith, too. Abram Elam is a MASSIVE upgrade over The Guy Who Used to Be Sean Jones. In particular, Elam, Coleman, and Barton are three starters who play Mangini's defense the way Mangini wants it played. DEs occupy and turn blockers, for instance... which Coleman does extremely well, yet still makes a ton of tackles.

Veikune is an upgrade over an absent Peek and all the other garbage we tried except Alex Hall. Those two should have an excellent competition, even if Bowens plays the first two downs. Robiskie is an upgrade over Stallworth, Steptoe, and the others, none of whom qualify as a steady #2. He's an ideal prescription. Alex Mack over last year's Hank Fraley? Uh, yeah. By miles and miles.

I won't go on and on, but this team is getting better by hitting one base hit after the next, just like those Pats. We still have Quinn, Edwards, Thomas, Steinbach, Tucker, Lewis, Harrison, Jackson, Wimbley, Rogers, Williams, Wright, McDonald, Pool, and Adams, the guys who COULD play for good NFL teams.

If Ratliff could have been his Brady in NY, no reason why he can't be like that here.

    That Brady beats our Brady.

San Jose State - Coye Francies

Cleveland Browns rookie defensive back Coye Francies learned a valuable lesson in college.

Police found a gun in his car during a routine traffic stop, according to this story in The Chronicle-Telegram.

Although the gun charge was dismissed, Francies was kicked out of school, but he got a second chance at San Jose State, and he made the most of it, says Keith Burns, defensive assistant and special teams coach at SJSU.

Francies started for San Jose State for a season, recording 69 tackles, three interceptions and three pass breakups. Lindy's magazine called him arguably the most underrated cornerback in the draft.

"The Browns got a steal," said Burns. . . . "He has all the attributes and all the talent to be a really great player."
