The CTE Thread...

You might find the same results if you dissected 110 non football players.

I wanna know who the one guy was that didn't have signs of CTE and if he wasn't a kicker.
-
Myles Garrett is no dummy either. $30mil for 4 years might talk very loudly for the guy who wants to own/run his own Paleontology Museum some day.

The brain is like jello. The helmet can only do so much. The sudden stop of a players head sloshes the jello against the inside of the skull. How do ya protect against that? Install air bags under the skull?
I think more and more players will be looking to get in, chash in, and get out (or cash in before they HAVE to get out).
As has been said, older vets who've taken care of their monies will have future brain health to consider when deciding whether or not to return for another season.

SI article....
Tuesday July 25th, 2017A new study by Boston University researcher Dr. Ann McKee examined the brains of 202 deceased football players and found that 110 of the 111 brains of former NFL players had chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). The results were published the Journal of the American Medical Association.
The brains were donated by families of former NFL players who showed signs of the disease. The study was not conducted on a set of random former NFL players, and Dr. McKee notes "tremendous selection bias" in the samples.
“It is no longer debatable whether or not there is a problem in football—there is a problem,” Dr. McKee said, according to the New York Times.
High school players in the study had mile cases while college and professionals had more severe cases. CTE was found in 177 of the 202 brains.
The disease can cause impaired judgment, aggression, memory loss and depression. CTE can only be diagnosed postmortem.
The study examined players as young as 23 years old and as old as 89. The brains were also from all player positions including 44 linemen, 10 linebackers, 17 defensive backs and seven quarterbacks.
Former NFL Hall of Famer Ken Stabler was among the brains after he asked that he be examined when he was battling colon cancer. McKee determined that Stabler had a "moderately severe" case of CTE.
The family of the only NFL player without CTE did not authorize for Dr. McKee to publicly identify him.

The laws of physics haven't changed. However, some of the NFL rule changes to promote more passing, more scoring and more ways to protect QBs puts more Receivers and RBs in space more frequently. A little robbing Peter to pay Paul here. Receptions in space often include a lot of acceleration from the receiver and the defenders prior to collisions. Punts and kickoffs also have a lot of accelerated motion leading up to contact.
We see a lot of guys that want to go for the ESPN/James Harrison killshots leading with their helmets; especially on defenseless targets looking the ball in over the middle (ie; Cribbs and MoMass). I remember Greg Lloyd trying to lead with his helmet on Kevin Mack. It took a bunch of smelling salts to finally get an upsydaisies so they could carry his dirty ass off the field.
Meanwhile, strength and conditioning programs continue to try to build/maintain bigger, faster, stronger athletes. There's also PEDs that the NFL drug testing is too outdated/inexpensive to detect (ie; HGH) as well as ongoing black market consultation on how to avoid getting caught while using. I read an article where Fran Tarkenton indicated despite some widespread awareness HGH is the drug of choice in the NFL - zero NFL players in the random population tested positive for it during the 1st year it was allegedly tested for. A multi-billion $ industry should be able to spend the right amount of money to detect the drugs it's testing for if it truly wants to catch more than Josh Gordon for recreational drug use (that does not give him an edge on the competition).
Some things to consider. While Rugby seems like a very violent game without helmets and shoulder pads, a lot of it's activity takes place in the scrums where players from both teams are colliding in closer proximity to one another. AND, while one is not wearing a helmet - the head is far less likely to be used as a weapon during collisions. I wonder if that sport has nearly as many head injuries/traumas as the NFL.
I also wonder if the incidence and prevalence rates of head injuries in pro football back in the leather helmet ages was higher or lower than it is today. Again, with the theory it was less tempting to be used as a weapon during contact. My guess is less head protection at least encouraged better text book tackling with defenders keeping their heads up to see who they are about to hit with their shoulder pads and wrap their arms around. That said, it could have also led to a lot more temptation to arm tackle people.

I'm wondering about the sample size. I'm also curious about CTE among the non-football playing populace and among other sports as well. As I understand it, CTE in soccer is becoming more prevalent.

... and bias as the SI article post shows. (thanks for posting)
Also was wondering about the position distribution. Some of the past study has shown it's not simply the big, KO hits we associate with WRs and DBs, but the OL and DL who can suffer undetectable mini-concussings in every game and live practice.

Rumors that Big Ben retires after this year. Hopefully Ogbah/Garrett/Peppers assist him in that decision. One or two little brain rattlers could help.

This was one of the studies the NFL FUNDED with it's $30 million donation to the NIH! The NIH still has about $16 million dollars left to spend of this "donation" but the terms expire at the end of August and they have announced they are not going to utilize that money. In a day and age where it is extremely difficult to get financial backing for projects this speaks volumes to the levels of how the NFL is trying to manipulate the data and the NIH no longer wants to do business with them. Clearly the NFL was not happy about the results of this article and tried to make a power play about dictating the terms for the next studies and the NIH declined.
Football is the new boxing. Boxing was huge in the 20's but once people realized the damaging effects it has on the brain, affluent populations began to distance themselves and their kids from the sport. This is a very broad statement I'm about to make, but there is a reason most boxers have had a tough life growing up but boxing was a way out. Football is going to be the same way. It will still be around in 50 years. It may look different than what we see today, but it's not going away all together. However, I do truly believe that it will not be found in very wealthy schools (litigation) and remote areas anymore. Maybe the hotbeds such as FL, OH, TX will still be football crazy but the trends of pee wee fb are speaking volumes. Parents are not letting their kids play tackle football

How to solve problem in football
Remove the body armor leads to less collisions
Play both ways, no more 375 beasts crushing people
Play on natural grass

I agree. I firmly believe if you put guys in equipment like was worn in the 50's, you'd see far less head injuries. Players today feel emboldened. Put a 1 or 2 bar facemask on them and you'd see way more arm tackling instead of these head shots. They also need to increase the fines. Don't just set a fine in dollars. Set it as a percentage. Make it hurt.
I like grass fields, but that isn't always possible with a dome, but you can add a padding under the turf to make the surface softer.
There is now soft helmet technology. The outer shell gives on impact,. NASCAR has been in to soft walls for a good while now. It makes sense to me. Lessen the shock before it gets to the body.

I don't know if it would be 'far' less....but they'd for sure have less teeth.
Remember, the PLAYERS are not like the players of the 50's.
There were no off-season conditioning programs back then. Or mini camps. Etc.
A lot of defensive players were just guys that weren't good enough to play offense. Now, with the glorifying of hard hits and creating 'limp offs', kids have grown up wanting to be defensive stars.
Today, the tone of a player's body is much different then the players of the 50's. Jim Brown playing today would NOT be a Man Among Boys...like he was back then.
I recently heard an expert on NPR who said that the helmet cannot do much more to help the brain. In order to make a difference the helmet would have to be HUGE...like the size of a beach ball.
They would continue to have to create more 'rules' in how to tackle. But even then, you cannot stop a player from taking a knee to the head or smacking his head on the ground.
The game of football was not part of the equation during the human body's evolutionary mutations / adaptations to nature. (the body was not made for football)

The net result of this bullshit will be the eventual demise of the NFL. It is inevitable and irreversible.
Males under 30 today are largely despicable. Most are politically correct, and if not openly homosexual, largely lantently homosexual. Today's young men don't stand for much other than saying and believing that " it's all good". Today's young men are a bunch of cunts, and if the nation had another call-to-arms, would have a hard time filling the bill to defend our nation.
Young women on the other hand, have become fucking dildo-wearing men wannabe assholes.
Anything that suggests self-determination, personal responsibility, sacrifice and hard work, is viewed by these young dumb cunts as anti American. This is how cancer like T-Ball got started. Young men are cunts, Young women (real cunts) thing they are men. As a result, you ill find increasingly less Mothers allowing their son's to play football. The pool of talent is evaporating, and so too, will the NFL.
Times are changing.
PS - This is how a faggot, tippy toe, ballet dance like Soccer grew to be a popular "sport". Faggot sport. liberals will emasculate anything that dares to threaten their idiotic view of world harmony. The NFL is just beginning it's demise.

I think you're generally right on that.

Umm....soccer is NOT all that good for the brain inside the skull either.
I would assume that heading a soccer ball is not recommended by the American Medical Association. Especially when two guys are trying to head it and they head each other.

Concussion Legacy Foundation

WHAT IS CTE?
Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) is a degenerative brain disease found in athletes, military veterans, and others with a history of repetitive brain trauma. In CTE, a protein called Tau forms clumps that slowly spread throughout the brain, killing brain cells. CTE has been seen in people as young as 17, but symptoms do not generally begin appearing until years after the onset of head impacts.
Early symptoms of CTE usually appear in a patient's late 20s or 30s, and affect a patient's mood and behavior. Some common changes seen include impulse control problems, aggression, depression, and paranoia.
As the disease progresses, some patients may experience problems with thinking and memory, including memory loss, confusion, impaired judgment, and eventually progressive dementia. Cognitive symptoms tend to appear later than mood and behavioral symptoms, and generally first appear in a patient’s 40s or 50s. Patients may exhibit one or both symptom clusters. In some cases, symptoms worsen with time (even if the patient suffers no additional head impacts). In other cases, symptoms may be stable for years before worsening......

WHAT CAUSES CTE?
The best available evidence tells us that CTE is caused by repetitive hits to the head sustained over a period of years. This doesn’t mean a handful of concussions: most people diagnosed with CTE suffered hundreds or thousands of head impacts over the course of many years playing contact sports or serving in the military. And it’s not just concussions: the best available evidence points towards sub-concussive impacts, or hits to the head that don’t cause full-blown concussions, as the biggest factor....
CTE has been found in... Source of head impacts
Boxers Punches to the head
Tackle football players Hits to the helmet
Soccer players Headers and collisions
Ice hockey players Fighting, checking
Military veterans Blast injuries, combat
Victims of domestic abuse Repeated violence

I don't doubt the studies that document the high rate of CTE. I do question whether or not they can clearly link "poor judgement, aggression and desperation" to the CTE. These are also three very common symptoms of long term steroid abuse which is prevalent in the NFL despite testing. The wild swings in hormone levels cause both short term and long term issues in these same areas.

This is almost pure damaged brain tissue as a principle cause of many, many deaths.
What's happened to Iron Mike Webster, Junior Seau, Ken Stabler and others is horrific just ask their surviving family members.
Ken Stabler missed his induction into the HOF, he was dead. It was amazing to see his family up on the stage.
