QB for 2017

The Browns Board

  • Does it really matter hue calling plays?

  • For the time being....I choose number 1.   Stay with Kizer.   Kessler can't (or won't) throw the ball downfield at all.   I don't think Hogan is all that great and I think you said it.  He's 21 years old...he's played 2 1/2 games and there are going to be some growing pains.   Watching Mariotta yesterday reminded me of watching him play against the Browns two years ago and he looked pretty shitty in that game, Browns sacked him like 10,000 times and the Browns won with Manziel completing like 4 passes but managing to hit a couple of bombs to Benjamin.   Now watching him lead his team to a beat down of the Seahawks yesterday shows how far a player can progress in a couple years by playing and clearly he is getting better as he plays.  Hopefully, Kizer can have that same type of progression but there's only one way to find out.

As for trading for Grabsapillow....how do we really know he's all that great?   Could trade a couple of #1s to find out he's actually no better than any of the QB's on the team.

  • Too soon for Kizer, so they're rushing him......Kessler cant win a game.......Hogan isnt the answer, but is probably our best chance to win......

Sooooo.....probably none of these guys does well this season.....and we will burn yet another high pick on QB next year, which will be the 5th one in the last 7 drafts....Weeden...Manziel....Kessler.....Kizer.....and ????

You sound like a real intelligent person.

Now go continue on with your beautifully original and informationally studded post about offering half the team for Jimmy Garoppolo.

  • Nice avatar you have there Couch.  Actually, you DON'T sound like an intelligent person so I'm gonna put you on the list so I don't have to see you any more....and I suggest you do the same for me.

Nah, I find the Ghoul entertaining (to varying degrees).

So then you would roll with Hogan and have Kizer sit and 'learn'.  I'm surmising.

I'm just not sure that sitting and learning will improve Kizer's accuracy.  It's THAT that scares me most about him right now.  You see, I'm of the camp that wants to keep drafting QB's high until we find a REAL honest to God QB to build the team around.  So I'd like to see Kizer for the year.  UNLESS, the thinking turns to - Hogan can be our QB of the future - because it's determined that Kizer will not fit the bill.

I also understand the 'win now' camp.  In reality, that is what is owed to the rest of the players on the team.

  • Yeah...I get that playing Kizer has to happen to see what he has.....and I get that we aren't winning anything this year, so what the heck...

But...I absolutely HATE not doing everything you can to win....every game....hate it, hate it, hate it.....its bad for the players and its bad for the fans.....

Right now I have more problems with how our defense is not playing than I do with a rookie QB who is playing a little better than I actually expected when compared to all the other great QBs who also struggled their first year or so. If the defense could get to playing better, all these complaints would end with a few narrow victories.

  • Hue Jackson does everything he can to win.... his way... any other way is wrong even if it has a better chance of winning games.

Relying on short and play action passing with running is wrong!!! because its not his long vertical passing game....

Kizer is the best QB on the roster...because Hue Jackson WANTS him to be...

Thats just wrong our defense gave up 14 points in the first game 24 points in the second AND let us win 4 games in the preseason with a top 3 defense there. Yea sunday was rough for the first half for our defense but our offense has had a rough 7 games so far

Futhermore how the shit are you blaming defense when we are giving the ball away and average of 3.5 times a game.

Hue is reminding me of Marty back in 1988, when Marty stubbornly refused to get an offensive coordinator. I think Hue's putting too much on his plate.

Our WRs can't separate, it's that simple. So teams stack the box and dare the Browns to throw....here comes the young gunslinger, throwing picks trying to make something happen.

I say stick with Kizer, and simplify the offense. Hue, suck it up, your QB is 21 years old.

Ya know, that's what I think Hue is.  An OC.  Kinda' like Josh McDaniels, the dope that drafted Tebow in round 1.  Or Crennell.  It happens a lot.  They're best at their coordinator positions.

    -------

Let's explore the Garoppolo option.  -  How desperate could Sashi become before the trade deadline of Halloween approaches.  Say we've got zero wins in mid October.....and the wrath of Haslam is starting to appear in his eyes. (we KNOW how he is deep down)  Could a move be made by the Harvard Think Tank as a ditch effort to try and save their jobs?

  • Hue has saddled his horse, now he's gotta ride it....... The 21yr old was destined to struggle from his 1st snap and he has, but there is nowhere to go but up and now we just need to see how high Kizer's ceiling is and how fast he can get there.

  • I don't agree with starting Kizer any longer. I'm going with option B.

It was said and made a point that Kizer shouldn't be rushed into starting. There is no reason to rush him.

He's a second round pick that was selected AFTER 3 first rounders.

He should be a junior right now learning how to correctly throw a football and read a defense, not leading an NFL team.

There is NO rush for him to start. Kizer has zero to do with whether or not big dick Sashi Brown selects a new QB next year in the Draft. We are always going to draft a QB, every year until we find the guy that can hold the position for a few years.

Let the 21 year old relax, learn the game and watch how to win at this level. Right now, we are destroying any chance of him "getting it". He's clearly frustrated and shellshocked and getting happy feet. He's staring down predetermined WRs and just trying to get rid of the ball. He's not finding the open guys, and when he does his passes are hard to reel in. It's been said, poor Kizer can't trust his receivers... Ever thought that maybe his receivers don't trust Kizer? Kizer just stands there and launches ball while the WRs are running 30/40 yards downfield and not even getting looked at.

If a QB is a sure fire bet in the draft next season it won't matter if Kizer has improved or won 8 games his rookie year. Kizer was an after thought and a project, he is not going to stop the FO from trading whatever they can to land a guy if they think he's the one.

    What should happen is-

Kevin Hogan should be the starting QB- he's our best chance to win. Let Kizer learn and grow up some. Hogan is ready for this opportunity. You keep Kizer on the roster as the #3 QB if you keep 3, the #2 if you keep 2, at least for the next 2 years.

Hogan can play this season and if we take a QB #1 overall in a trade or otherwise, Hogan could start next year while the Rookie learns. And then when you promote the new QB you evaluate Hogan and Kizer and determine if Kizer is even ready to contend for the backup job. You make the new guy earn the job. Right now we are doing it backwards.

  • It seems like we're not trying to win right now.

We're using this season to see if Kizer is the QB of the future just like we used last season to see if Kessler was the QB of the future. Sashi and company didn't want to take a QB at #2 or #1 because their would be too much pressure for that pick to succeed, and if it failed, their jobs would be on the line. Taking a QB in the second round or third round doesn't provide that much pressure for them. It's all a ploy in my opinion so we can try to "build" the team and choose a quarterback in the top of the draft next year. If kessler or kizer worked out, it's a damn near steal, and if they fail, it's not big deal because they weren't first round picks. The problem with this analytics stuff is that we trade down too much to gather too many picks. We haven't hit an absolute proven stud playmaker yet, and ended up with a bunch of average players from the picks.

PoG is right, Hogan deserves a shot. Kizer is a project, and needs to sit. Aaron Rodgers and Garappolo both sat. Throwing a 21 year old kid out to the wolves is setting himself up for failure.

I kind of have an opposite vibe......the D is playing about as I expected(which is better)....an improved run D, with a weak defensive backfield......

And the O is just as terrible as expected .....with Kizer being worse than Id hoped......hell, Kessler played much better last year, and he was a rookie too....(w/o an arm).....to my eyes, the O has not changed....same lack of a run game, same poor WR corps, same 4 sacks per game, same poor QB situation(with extra turnovers)....

Our Defense played exactly the way I thought after the leader goes down with 13:46 left in 3rd in Baltimore. Jamie Collins(concussion) No Veteran Leadership walked into Indy & got ass-raped..When we hit practice today, Not only would Garrett help but damn this young Defense needs Jamie Collins Veteran Leadership Field-General..Hope for both to make it to Sunday's Line-up..We need'em..Jamar Taylor made Peppers look good after TY showed J.Taylor why you can't play a game with a hang-over(watch gassed J.Taylor on tape) Peppers now playing center field S has now screwed his field vision on Punts..Remember Pepper's fair catching any punts at UM? As for Kizer? just as seen before in Redzone this season. We line-up 1st & goal from 1 & throw TD to Njoku..It's All about evaluating Kizer at the QB position, while he is still standing. I must say that Kizer has took some NFL shots at release in pocket..He's tough as nails, but damn turn that ugly pig loose..(Hue,bring in RG today & throw footballs into surrounding backyards & move the pocket)
