Browns vs 49'ers - Who Will Get Good First

The Browns Board
8 6 446
  • Boths teams stink mainly because of the QB position.     The 49'ers have recently benched Hoyer (wherever he lands he eventually gets benched).

Last year the 9'ers were dead last in the league in defense.  We were next to last but there was a huge gap between our D and theirs.  At this point (6 games in) their up to 28th and we're inside the top 10 at #8.  (that and 25 cents will get you a jukebox song since we're both winless).  As we know, our D gives up big plays.

Last year our offenses ranked 30th (us) and 31st (them)  -  Rams were last (this season they're 8th).  Now, the 9'ers are ranked 20th and we're 26th.

Back to the Rams.  In 2016 they had the 9th ranked defense...but the last ranked offense.  They finished 4-12.  In 2017 they're 23rd in D but 8th in offense and 6 weeks into the season they already have 4 wins and lead their division.  What could it be that has transformed the Rams?  Gee.....does anybody have any ideas?

Now sure, the Rams could go completely into the sewer from here on out.  But the way it looks it's the teams that DON'T have their QB in place that will be the sewer dwellers.

Who will get good first, us or the 49'ers?   Well, it depends on the QB position. IMO     - Now, to go chainsaw some pruned branches for the chiminea.

  • The niners lost 4 of their six games by 3 points or less.

The 2017 Browns currently have a point differential of -63.

  • "Browns vs. 49ers"... but I'm going to spend most of my OP on the Rams???

    Focus... O.... focus... 😉

I think the 49ers are ahead of us right now. And need to start with now to project who arrives first at some future finish line... at least I do...

    Defensively...

    • their DL is more athletic across the board... they have invested heavily there.
    • LBs are close to a wash, but that's with Foster temporarily shelved. Burgess' surprisingly fill-in for Collins helps us.
    • Secondary? I like our pair of CBs better, but Ward gives them a real FS.
    • Overall pretty even in the starting 11.
    • Depth? Both are deepest in the DL. We may have DB edge. Not much at LB on either squad.

    Offensively...

    • OL is heavily slanted to us. From what I've heard Laken T has not played well at LG. Staley is a nice, solid, vet LT, but will never be confused with Joe. Center and right side aren't as good.
    • RB is heavy in SF's favor. Hyde has injury issues, but when healthy... Then there's his back up who is pushing Carlos for PT. Juszczyk is a Medinda bred beast at FB.
    • WR? If we have "Pipe-Dream" Gordon, Coleman and the 2016 Britt on the field... but we don't, so big check for SF with Garcon, Taylor and Goodwin.
    • TE? Clear advantage Browns. Kittle is a nice, 2-way TE, but so too has Telfer become one. And when you add in Njoku and Devalve, we have athletes at the position SF can't match.
    • Which brings us to QB... Hoyer got benched, but they want to see CJ Beathard... another Tour darkhorse. However, they are no closer to settling QB than we are... unless you believe in the Shanny-Cousins connection... and I do. Cousins arrival won't be offset by any immediately visible move we might make this side of my Alex Smith flight of fancy.

FO? Lynch got off to a great start adding Thomas, Foster, Beathard and Kittle in his first effort, but can he sustain? Not enough data to project SF. You while you know I believe in our FO, I can accept that the same "need-more-data" case can be made for us. We shall see.

Staff? So far so good for Young Shanny as HC, but it's still early and he has left a trail of ruin behind him in at least two of his last three OC jobs. Hue on the other hand... seems to be digging in on his offense... on his OC skill... and hard to see how it's benefiting him to this point. With at least RB and WR addressed in 2018? Again, we shall see...

My Bottom line... while I maintain our four, primary areas of weakness, QB, RB, WR and FS can all be addressed in one more off-season, SF's path to a QB looks much clearer to me. That's the biggest difference I see. That's why as of today, I think SF finishes ahead of us... at least in the short term.

🙂  Well, in going through the stats I couldn't help but to notice the hapless Rams in 2016...and how they left us and the 9'ers in the dust this year.

  • Why’d they bench Hoyer when they were in every game?

Because in four of his six starts he's not thrown for a touchdown while throwing for 5.5 yards an attempt or worse is my guess. His four TD passes came in his other two starts.

  • That plus they have a chance to play a Tour darkhorse... see what they got...

Wait a minute..... that last part has a familiar ring to it.... 🙂

  • 49ers.  They at least score once in a while
