4. Clayton Thorson, Northwestern
Thorson is Brady’s exact size (6-foot-4, 225 pounds) with a quick delivery (like Garoppolo) and is smart and athletic with good mechanics, scouts told Walter Football’s Charlie Campbell.
The Illinois native (like Garoppolo, again) is coming off a triple-overtime win over then-ranked No. 16 Michigan State on ESPN, and was ranked as one of Mel Kiper’s top five underclassmen prospects before the season.
Thorson could go as late as day three, meaning the Patriots can take him later if they view him as a viable backup to Brady, giving them more opportunities at talented defensive players with their higher picks.
Although he’s the starting quarterback of a Big Ten school, Northwestern is not a big-time program. But Garoppolo came from Eastern Illinois. A quarterback like Thorson that exhibits leadership and skills is worth a look on Day two or three.
Is Northwestern becoming QB U?
Trevor Siemian and Mike Kafka have already been drafted this decade, and Clayton Thorson — the team's current signal-caller — could be next.
ESPN's noted NFL Draft guru Mel Kiper Jr. ranked Thorson as one of his top five underclassman quarterbacks ahead of the 2018 draft.

Kiper wrote those in May. And the Pats have no shot @ Rosen or Darnold without reversing how they run their drafts.
Much has changed over the season and the cream Rose(n) to the top.

Before cal is done, Rosen will be a UDFA...
... and the cream Rose(n) to the top.
No way your wife approved that butchery!

Good thing Rosen isn't a member of this board, calfox would have reported him to the moderators for that ShmuckTRUMP headband!
-
true, but the fact that the Pats could value him like they saw a real qb in Brady in the sixth round... and it's obvious to everybody that it was written in May. Just because you have the first overall pick, doesn't mean you just select Ryan Leaf, who was the cream that rose to the top. all those great stats you love.
Let's put it this way - one of the greatest NFL qb's, Johnny Unitas was picked in the ninth round. Dan Marino was picked in the first round, but he was pick #27.
Sometimes the best qb is overlooked because he didn't play on a solid team, in a bigtime conference. Sometimes the worst pick at qb is high in the first round. STats are deceiving when the qb doesn't have the mental makeup, leadership qualities, work ethic, etc...
Jake Lockhart -- some thought he'd go first overall in the draft. Christian Ponder - 12th overall Akili Smith - 3rd overall
and Matt Leinart, 1st round tenth overall, old sheply's greatest qb of all time...til he got to the NFL. and first round Brady Quinn.. Jamarcus Russell FIRST OVERALL, manziel... Tebow...
I'm not looking for the highest rated. I'm looking for the qb that has the intangibles, the serious love for the game, the ability to read/see the field like a Bernie Kosar - a leader who never quits and can make the offense click, inspires him team to fight to win.
-
Rosen will be the pick, count on it.The comparisons to leaf are ridiculous. Leaf was valued for his arm talent and size. I highly doubt he had rosens pocket intangibles.
I really dont care that some of rosens teammates hate him, the offensr obviously had zero problem playing around him. I wouldnt mind acquiring smith for a coyple years while rosen sits behind him
-
I don't hate rosen, it's just the unanswered questions leave me wanting them answered, and turning to a few
other qbs fixes that.

say, I figure he will go in the first round, but if he's a rose, his personality and lack of leadership is the thorn...

Norm Van Brocklin had a thorny personality as a QB that eventually carried over into a coaching career as well. You may not have liked him as a fellow player, but you damn sure better do your job right or he'd blister your ears right in the huddle. Rosen strikes me as a similar kind of leader, football smarter than his teammates and damn sure in charge of what he wants the team and individual players to be doing. Headstrong? You bet. Exactly what this team needs.
-
That may be the first Norm Van Brocklin reference in the history of this forum...
"When you have a shared vision it is a lot easier to make unpopular decisions." - Paul DePodesta "When you win, say nothing. When you lose, say less." - Paul Brown Complete 2017 Browns Board Mock: http://thebrownsboard.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=46196 -
It just doesn't seem right to argue a point when a guy brings up Norm Van Brocklin as a comparison....
