Todd Haley
-
It wasn't so long ago that we had names like Sashi Brown, DiFilipo, Mike Pettine, and that bozo as our defensive coordinator. Now we have John Dorsey, Hue Jackson, Gregg Williams, and Todd Haley. We have a widely regarded front office and management staff. We somehow got the hottest coaching candidate 2 years ago, and while his results have been less than inspiring, I for one am growing excited at the infrastructure we're putting in place. And here's the thing: We're built for the long haul.
I know what you're thinking, and that's, "We're an 0-16 team, 1-31 over 2 years, and you're saying that WE'RE built for the long haul?!" Why yes...yes we are. Many people say it takes 3 years to get a plan to come together and 3 years to fully evaluate a draft. Well, welcome to year 3. All of our young players are going to become veterans with experience, we're a team with a ton of early round picks, and we're going to add a bunch more this season. We're also FINALLY entering the season with the same coaches and systems in place on both sides of the ball. Will Todd Haley bring his own wrinkles? Of course. Will it be exactly the same? No. But a lot of the core principles, terminology, and formations will remain intact, and that's key for the development of our young players.
People can laugh all they want, but I'm actually starting to see something here. Hue Jackson took a lot of heat for not hiring an OC for 2 years, and maybe rightfully so, but would we have gotten an OC as highly regarded as Todd Haley? Maybe there's some truth to what Hue said in that he didn't believe it was fair to give such a task to a coordinator because he knew it'd be extremely rough. Now that we're building our team the right way (in my twisted mind), we sought out a proven coordinator, and it's now time to expeditiously use our our cap space to add veteran players to our growing roster of youth.
What I think some haven't thought about is the "domino effect" we could see happening Cleveland. What do I mean? Say we figure out a way to get Alex Smith at QB. We have Smith playing under Todd Haley, hopefully Josh Gordon, Duke Johnson, and other attractive weapons. Perhaps that tells other veterans that it's time to come to Cleveland. The checkbook is open, there's real coaches in Cleveland (finally), we have our QB, and the roster is beginning to fill out with high draft picks and some quality veteran free agents. We finally have a GM who understands football, a fan base excited and begging for a good team, and an attacking defensive coordinator who is going to have some ammunition to play with.
In fully aware that we were 0-16 last year. I understand that we were historically awful, and I'm not trying to blast sunshine up everyone butt because it's the offseason and the time when Browns fans are the happiest. For the first time in basically forever I look at the structure of our franchise and I actually LIKE what I see. Do we still need a freaking QB? Lord yes. Are we guaranteed to get Alex Smith or Kirk Cousins? Nope. But I have to believe we have a shot at one of them, and even if we don't get them, we're still getting the highest rated QB on our board, AND we don't have to wait an entire round to pick again. We have to wait 2 picks. That's it. We can actually draft our QB and then still draft probably our next highest rated pick (most likely because one of picks 2 or 3 will be a QB, possibly both). There's a chance Saquon Barkley is drafted at 2 or 3, so we might miss out on him, but I have a VERY difficult time believing we'll use both of our 1st rounders on offense, so I'm still thinking we're taking Minkah Fitzpatrick at 4...something I'm rooting for.
Todd Haley could be the second-to-last piece of our puzzle, and the final piece will be our QB. It's been so long, TOO long, and I have to believe we'll get it right. Bring in Alex Smith, draft Minkah Fitzpatrick, Darrius Guice, and keep Josh Gordon clean by the grace of God, and we've got a real team....finally, hopefully, mercifully. I'm not generally a super optimistic guy, so don't think I'm positive for the sake of being positive. Even Joe Thomas feels the same way, and while he's not the "be-all, end-all" of football knowledge, it's still nice to hear similar remarks from a player who has done more than just "stick around". We've got a real chance at building a team from the ground up, and while I don't believe the turn around will be instantaneous, I do think we could have a near-historic win differential next year, if only because our insane zero wins last year. As we get closer to March, I expect the Alex Smith rumors to get crazy. Make the deal, bring him to Cleveland, and let him work with Todd Haley to deliver us the goods.

I agree that so far this off season they are making all the right staffing/FO moves and hopefully from that comes the experienced bridge QB and the right rookie QB with time to learn. As long as someone else is handling the O on game day Hue can take advantage of his best qualities in the weekly game planning with all aspects of the game while boosting the confidence of all the youngsters as they learn to be pros. Sure we all were hoping to see more success on the field, but any team missing crucial pieces both on the field and off is just going to struggle. But at least we were still in a number of those games until the weaknesses finally took us down.
-
Hue has 16 games to get it right and more likely 10 if the Browns dont get better yesterday. Haley was a HC and so was Williams. Maybe Hue was hamstrung by Sashi not getting the QB that he wanted. Sticking with Kizer was good and bad. The good part is that now you know that youve got to go out and draft a stud. Preferably, IMO land a FA Vet that can win now and school the rookie. The bad part was watching Kizer not get better. He might be ruined. He sure has a tougher row to hoe in 2018 to get back on the field.
-
We are set up for success now.
Hue is a likeable guy that relates well to players and who players will play hard for even at 0-15, which is tested and remarkable. Not putting together the offensive gameplan every week frees him up to better know his roster and give individual attention where needed.
Todd Haley is a dick. A dick whose offenses have taken three different franchises to the playoffs and one to the Super Bowl.
Gregg Williams is a dick. A dick whose defenses have taken three different franchises to the playoffs and two to the Super Bowl. A dick with a ring.
This offseason we lose the least (One starter to FA) gain the most (double draft stock of the closest team) and can spend the most (cap room out the wazoo).
AFC North is in a down cycle, Browns will win it next year. We will either sign the best FA QB (Cousins) or draft the best rookie QB (Rosen) ... I guarantee you it is one or the other.
QB Rosen/Cousins
RB Barkley, Duke
WR Gordon, draft pick, Coleman
TE Nojoku, Devalve
OL Thomas, Bito, Tretter, Zeitler, Coleman
DL Garrett, Coley, Shelton, Draft pick/free agent
LB Collins, Schobert, Kirksey
CB Fitpatrick/draft pick, McCourty
S Peppers, Free agent/ draft pick
Immensely improved depth, first class special teams with a real kicker ... We are 9-7/10-6 next year with a bullet

Unbelievable. Not only do.these axzzholes make the same stupid mistakes over and again, but fans think this is actually a rebirth.
Come on man, if we'd have hired Haley last year you'd have jizzed. They had a bad game and now he's a terrible OC? He has consistently had top tier offenses and will get the weapons to do so here.

The offense didn't even have a particularly bad game. They put up 42 on one of the league's best defenses. The defense had a bad game.

I'll have to do some research the last time a team scored 42 points in a playoff game and lost.
Our ex Brown Joe gave up a few big plays on defense, he'd still be in Cleveland if he would have taken the 66% pay cut he was willing to take to play for the Steelers.
EDIT: More recently than I would have guessed. 2013. Chiefs scored 44 on the Colts, and lost 45-44.

If you are a Browns fan why would you care about the Steelers OC, and why would you want him fired if he's bad at his job?
Seriously, why is this troll not banned yet?

Good point......if you are a Browns fans....you would want the Squibs to keep their POS OC.
But, you see....Glommie is just that...a FRAK.

So let me get this right Pimento dik.................................I should be banned because during the season I make observations about the Steelers? Now, this board is FULL of members analytical bullshidt talking about what other teams should do, about Wentz, Lynch, Goff,......in fact Poosy boy, YOU spend more time analyzing and trashing the Bengals than ANYONE INCLUDING ME........... does about the Steelers.
EDITED:
Never said Haley was a great hire- you'd rather blast me when I point out you have no "better option" than Haley you can pull out of your a$$. I'll repeat it, since you want to take the low road:
So you got any better suggestions for an Offensive coordinator oh wise one? Didn't think so. He's out there somewhere in the mysterious vapor of Ghooliedom. Crickets chirping so far. And don't give me some Zen $hit "this is the kind of guy I'm looking for". Do your homework for a change, and give me a name- you won't- because you can't.
As far as (Haley) getting fired by a good team and us getting a reject- well some of our Steeler pals think the wrong guy got fired. Your hero Art Schmodel in his wisdom fired not just one but two of the greatest coaches of all time.
PS Smart a$$, I analyzed the Bengals enough to tell you flat out you were full of $hit thinking the Bengals were going to go 11-5 in 2017.

Furthermore you know damn well why you were kicked off, and let back on.

I have never been in favor of having Glommie kicked off. I mean...you know...this board is like a buffet. If I see some prime rib on there, I am going for it. If I see a bowl of tripe.....I simply pass it by.
Sometimes, yes, with Glommie I do think I am seeing what I think is a nice casserole but then when I get it on my plate and take my seat at the table, I realized I have put some Haggis on there....so I have to leave it sit. But, on rare occasion.....he does throw out a plate of baked beans...and I consume them.....but then have to have a Blazing Saddles moment a bit later...having to dispose of the gas that I have been burdened with.
So be it.

Well, the defense got better with Williams. Lets see if the same happens with Haley. Its not possible that it can get worse. At least he will have an axe to grind vs Pittsburgh twice a year.

But what can get worse is the coach's room...
Williams and Haley in a small room with mounting losses and only Hue to mediate? What could go wrong? 🥷

Oh....please NO NO NO NO NO.....the Dude is one of my favorite characters ever...and to equate him to Glommie is just down right disgusting. I need an apology and a retraction immediately. No...I demand one!!! And I am deadly serious here.

If we sign Cousins we can draft Barkley and Fitzpatrick. If we don't, we draft Rosen/ Barkley.
