Camp Barkley #1 Overall
-
One was Adrian Peterson the other was Eric Dickerson.
Damn... I missed one.
Guess my two were stumpers...
They were:
- Butch Woolfolk - School: Michigan - Position: RB - Draft: 1st round, 18th overall of the 1982 NFL draft by the New York Giants... and
- Steve Slaton - School: West Virginia - Position: RB - Heisman Voting: 4th in 2006

Slowing Saquon - Barkley, who looked like the Heisman frontrunner just three weeks ago, had little room to run behind an offensive line without it's starting Left Tackle.
Ryan Bates, who was hurt Oct. 28th against Ohio State, missed his second game with an undisclosed injury. Barkley has been held to 63 rushing yards or fewer in each of the last three games.
"It's part of the game," Barkley said. "Obviously I'm aware of what teams are going to try and do and teams are going to try to take away our run game and take away our backs."
Penn State: Three games ago, Penn State was sitting at No. 2 and had a clear path to the playoff with a bona fide Heisman Trophy front-runner in Barkley leading the offense. With two losses and one shaky start later, Penn State can't get Barkley going on the ground, and his Heisman chances are becoming slimmer.
-----------------------------------------
- So there you go War, losing a LT and Defenses scheming to stop the run. That was a three game stretch at least, in which their only 2 losses of the season came as well.
*The very next game against Nebraska, on the very first offensive play Barkley took a run for 65 yards down the sideline.
*The Georgia game? His stats don't look good, 10 carries - 47 yards for a long of 33 right? Not good as you would say, "take out the long of 33 yards and Barkley only ran for 14 yards on 9 carries"! Well... there's this. You just have to try a little harder to get the information you seek. http://www.espn.com/ncf/recap/_/id/undefined
"McSorley threw a stadium-record 85-yard touchdown pass to Saquon Barkley for one of his four scoring strikes and also ran for a touchdown in No. 5 Penn State's 56-0 victory over Georgia State 56-0 on Saturday night.
"That was something that was in my mind," McSorley said. "Last week, personally, I didn't put our team in the best position through my play to win the game. Obviously, we were able to come out with a win but I felt that I didn't put our team in the best position."
That's all he did against Georgia State (0-2) and he got off to a fast start.
McSorley completed 14 of 19 passes for 258 yards in the first half to help Penn State (3-0) take a 35-0 lead in a rare prime-time game against a non-Power Five opponent.
The junior quarterback finished 18 of 23 for 309 yards and running back Saquon Barkley had 226 all-purpose yards despite being sidelined for a stretch in the second quarter with a stomach bug.
Barkley returned to the game after a brief evaluation but wasn't needed much longer. Penn State rested most of its starters after scoring on its first drive of the second half.
"I thought Trace definitely threw the ball better," Penn State coach James Franklin said. "Saquon, he's just got so many tools. You're talking about a 230-pound guy that can make you miss, can run you over and can burst down the sideline."
BARKLEY'S OMINOUS TENT VISIT
Penn State's sideline got a scare when Barkley signaled he needed a breather midway through the second quarter.
The Heisman candidate had just lowered his head on an inside run and was piled on by Panthers defenders. Although he popped up quick, Barkley walked slowly to the bench, sat down and hung his head for a bit before being shuffled into the team's nearby medical tent by the team's head athletic trainer.
Barkley emerged after a few minutes and returned to the game apparently no worse for wear. He said afterward he ate something before the game that didn't agree with him and was fine after a brief reprieve.
"It didn't really affect me in the game," Barkley said.
----
So, there's an explanation for four games that you were concerned about. In the one game the kid had 142 receiving yards and a TD.
Need I continue? Or do you got it from here, I've shared his stat log below for easy reference.

Northwestern tying down Saquon Barkley, but Penn State pitching shutout
Penn State running back Saquon Barkley arrived in Evanston as the supposed Heisman Trophy favorite. Right now he’s looking to leave town just with some positive rushing yardage. Northwestern has held Barkley to negative rushing yardage (-1) so far, but Penn State has managed to take a 10-0 lead on the Nittany Lions.
Northwestern failed to take advantage of a fourth down conversion on their offensive opportunity. After completing a 4th and 8 from the Penn State 34-yard line to the Penn State 10-yard line, the Wildcats immediately started moving the wrong way thanks to a holding penalty and a sack by Curtis Cothran to move the ball back to the Penn State 28-yard line. Two plays later, Clayton Thorson’s desperation ball was picked off by Amani Oruwariye. The Wildcats turned the ball over on a Thorson fumble on their next offensive possession, which also crossed midfield.
Barkley has carried the football eight times and has been stuffed every time. He enters halftime with -1 rushing yards and just seven all-purpose yards with one eight-yard catch. Can Northwestern manage to dial in on Barkley like this for another two quarters? If they do, then the Northwestern offense has to start finding a way to get some point son the board and avoid letting other offensive options from hurting them when Penn State has the ball. Penn State has tended to make adjustments and play well in the second half over the last year.
The only touchdown of the half came on a pass from Penn State’s starting quarterback, Trace McSorley, to Penn State’s backup quarterback, Tommy Stevens.
-----------------------------------------
This was at halftime on October 7th, the Wildcats held Barkley to -1 yards. But look what he was able to finish with, 75 yards and 2 TDs!

You're making our (or maybe just my) points for us. -1 yards in the first half. You think a run-based NFL attack can sustain that? We'd be down 17-0 and then your 76 yards in the second half will mean bubcus. Not good.

Ok, I understand now, you want an unproven back over a versatile pro bowler, CHECK.
And this unproven guy was held in check to what would amount to less than practice squad defense, as there surely aren't many or possibly any NW defenders to be drafted. CHECK.
I dont believe anyone here is saying the young man will not be good. But fact is, nobody knows, and you are using different ways to talk high about him to say he is a generational player that can't be proven anytime soon. Crowd, breaking big runs, heart, stats dont define him, etc. You notice how a lot of players break off big plays in college, not nearly as many in the NFL. Why? Because NFL is the best players from each college. CHECK MATE.
-
The fact that the defense was IN the backfield before Barkley even got the ball wasn't obvious? Blocking from the Oline plays a huge factor in a RBs #'s... also, a defense stacking the box and keying on swarming Saquon nearly every play should tell you how scared they were of him.
-
Actually, many of the plays were he takes a loss in simply the QB running an option look, looking to throw and Barkley staying back to watch his back. If the QB doesn't see what he likes and the defense is coming and there is nowhere to go, he just hands it to Barkley and hopes he can make something happen. He's done some incredible things, come on, a little credit. The guy has incredible talent with the ball in his hands. Ran a laser timed 4.33 40 and is the Strongest player at their school. Have you even seen his workout videos? No... alright give me some time and I'll drum some up. Got a meeting with a patent attorney in Cleveland in the morning, I should already be asleep lol

When you going to figure out highlight videos mean nothing without the concurrent lowlight videos Po? Teams will do the exact same thing to Barkley in the pros- without the missing ingredient- a great QB.
Jim Brown, Walter Payton, and Barry Sanders combined have less championships than Tom Brady- or Joe Montana. That's the meal ticket to the top- so wise up.
-
It’s different for those of us who don’t see Hogan as the QBOTF. Regardless of how good a running back is, unless he’s also passing the ball he can’t take presidence over the top QB in a class like this.
If the Browns want Barkley, they can wait until 4th overall. If he gets picked before that, oh well, at least the most important position is taken care of. Historically speaking, odds are good that another rookie back will have similar or better numbers than Saquon anyway.
Leonard Fournette + Christian mccaffrey = 2428 yards from scrimmage, 17 total TDs and 4 fumbles.
Alvin Kamara + Kareem Hunt = 3336 yards from scrimmage, 24 total touchdowns and 2 fumbles.
Third round RBs blowing the first round guys out of the water.

You are telling us that Penn State runs option plays where the options are:
1. Scan the defense in an attempt to pass the ball...
2. If the QB doesn't like what he sees, instead of tucking the ball and running it himself, or throwing the ball away, the QB should hand the ball off to Barkley to lose yards.
I'd pay money to see you talk to this "patent attorney in Cleveland".

GREAT point Larry! That said, you chose 2 QBs that didn't even get drafted until the end of round 3 and in round 6. How about this one? The Dallas Cowboys drafted Troy Aikman 1st overall in 1989. Later that year, they traded RB Herschel Walker to Minnesota for a bunch of picks and players they could surround Aikman with. One of them led to Dallas trading up to draft Emmitt Smith at #17 overall in 1990. Doesn't this remind us there's ALWAYS good RBs after the 1st overall and/or 4th overall pick? There's not always going to be a Troy Aikman on your door step at #4 though (especially if 2 QBs are drafted at #2 and #3 overall).
Our FO has been overthinking the crap out of the QB position. Get our #1 QB with the 1st overall pick. Once we do that to the supply for the demand, there's probably going to be a run on the QB position at #2 and #3 anyway. Guess who that puts on our door step at #4? Barkley. We can either buy the hype and draft him or Herschel Walker his asssss in a trade-down for more picks.
Me and Royce have brought up where Kamara and Hunt were drafted last year. And even though UGA was once most known for Herschel Walker - Terrell Davis was a 6th round RB that had an Hall of Fame NFL career. Once he arrived in Denver, Elway stopped losing Superbowls. THIS YEAR, UGA sends Nick Chubb and Sony Michel to the NFL draft. In split duty last year, Michel had 156 carries for 1227 yds at 7.9 ypc and 16 TDs while Nick Chubb 223 carries for 1345 yds at 6.0 ypc and 15 TDs. Both guys also went over 1000 yards rushing at least 1 more time in their SEC career. The draft NEVER runs out of studs at RB after pick #1 or pick #4.

So, there's an explanation for four games that you were concerned about. In the one game the kid had 142 receiving yards and a TD.

GOD BLESS YA! You are Wunphunmofo. Before you officially replace Cupid - we interrupt this Hallmark moment to remind you that both Sony Michel and Nick Chubb had better ypc than Barkley in 2017. Why the urgency to leapfrog QB at #1 overall? You don't want to play spin the bottle when there's too many Roseann Barrs in the circle. Get our QB first, which should trigger a run on QBs at #2 and #3, that will leave us any pick of the litter we want at other positions/BPA at #4 overall.
As I already wrote, Sony Michel had 156 carries for 1227 yds at 7.9 ypc and 16 TDs while Nick Chubb 223 carries for 1345 yds at 6.0 ypc and 15 TDs. Not bad for split duty, eh?
The thing that worries me about Barkley is he had his hibernation games against Ohio State, Rutgers and Missedagain State. Trent Richardson was built just like him so we bought the hype to the wide-spread applause of network draft analysts after trading up from #4 or #3 to pick him. In the NFL, he looked like a raccoon crossing the road at night time. He had no vision, which rendered all that speed and power useless. RB is a position that usually stocks drafts well. Over the years we've seen RD 6 gems like Denver's Terrell Davis and Atlanta's Jamal Anderson; a RD 5 kid like Chicago's Jordan Howard; last year's round 3 guys NO's Alvin Kamara and KC's Kareem Hunt; previous RD 2 guys like Buffalo's Thurman Thomas, Pitts' LeVeon Bell and Cleveland's Greg Pruitt (depicted in my avatar). Before the draft got shortened, we landed Earnest Byner in round 10.

In "John (Dorsey) I Trust", so we'll just see who he & his staff choose.
BTW folks, I keep seeing YPC...what about blocking & receiving?

Base picking Barkley strictly on talent. Barring injury, his size, speed and skills are going to dominate. He seems like a competitor without issues. The O-Line is already in place. The right rookie QB next to Barkley could turn this team around real quickly.
