M-M-My G-G-Generation

  • Talk has been made on here about  Generational talent.   Well...to me that means that it has to be someone who comes along only 18-20 years, and who is the best of that era.

For this purpose, lets divide the "generational talents" into players who actually played during particular generations.

The accepted Generational Breakdown since about 1900 is this:

    The G.I. Generation.....born from about 1900 to 1924

    The Lost...or Silent Generation.....born from 1925 to 1945

    Baby Boomers...born  1946-1964

    Gen X....born 1965 to 1983

    Millenials...born 1984 to 2002.

Name TBD....born 2002 to current (would end about 2020.

So....who were the BEST  1 or 2 players that played during the era of each of those generations.   For this...I will just look at 2 spots.....QB and RB.  We may add others.  For some of these spots...I am pretty square on on who I think was THE generational talent.   For others...it is very very close....and all you all need to have your input. So here we go:

G.I. Generation...1900 to 1924 (but for this purpose we only count the first 5 years of the 20s)

QB:  Jimmy Conzelman.   Runnerup:  Fritz Pollard

RB:  Jim Thorpe.   Runnerup  Joe Guyon

Lost or Silent Generation...1925 to 1945

QB:  Sid Luckman....he played QB for Bears right at the end of this...39-45...and won 4 titles.   Runnerup:  Arnie Herber  (QB of 3 time champ Packers)

RB:  I am having trouble deciding between   Cliff Battles, Bronko Nagurski, and Red Grange.    All have credentials.

    Baby Boomers:   1946 -1964

QB:  Otto Graham.     Runnerup:   John Unitas

RB:  Jim Brown.   Runnerup:  debate between Joe Perry and Lenny Moore.  Think I will choose Moore

    Gen X: 1965 to 1983

QB:  Three way debate in my mind between Bart Starr,  Terry Bradshaw, and Roger Staubach.  Not sure why....but my mind gut tells me to choose Staubach....even though the others came away with more titles. Runnersup would be whomever doesn't take the top spot.

RB:  Also splitting hairs here between either OJ Simpson or  Walter Payton.  My gut says OJ...my mind says Walter.  Other would be runnerup.

    Millenials:  1984-2002

QB:  Joe Montana...to my mind.    Runnerup between Elway and Marino.

RB: At first I was thinking a 3 way tussle between Barry Sanders, Eric Dickerson, and Emmit Smith....but I gotta go with Sanders as #1.  The others runnersup

Current TBD generation:  2003 to present

    QB.  Brady      Runnerup:  Peyton

RB:  Tussle between LaDanian Tomlinson and   Adrian Peterson......other is runnerup.

OK. so help me decide some of these.

    (or...did I miss a candidate?)

I explained that in the original post....and it was clear from the content.   Played...not born

Kellen Winslow II is of my generation, and he's a solja who got arrested for getting high as Shmuck on synthetic weed and masturbating in a store parking lot. So, there's that....

Interesting note there:    There have been NO Presidents of the US that came out of the "Silent Generation"....1925-1945.  Reagan and Poppy Bush, and Jimmy Carter and Kennedy etc. came from the GI Generation.....and then it skipped to Clinton  W. Bush, Obama....etc.  all Baby Boomers.

  • Baby Boomers:   1946 -1964....... Old Otto?

QB:  Otto Graham. <--- born in December 1921, he's 17 days older than my dad, I never related to or saw him play   Runnerup:   John Unitas <-----  born May 1933 in Pittsburgh, same as the steelers, I can closer relate to him but still closer to the greatest or in the silent group in his character

RB:  Jim Brown <---- bon Feb. 1936, saw him as a kid.   Runnerup:  debate between Joe Perry born in 1927, old dude!..... and Lenny Moore.  Think I will choose Moore

Gen X: 1965 to 1983 .........and on it goes every bracket, just doesn't seem to fit

QB:  Joe Montana...to my mind. born in June 1956 same as my wife, BOOMER!   Runnerup between Elway and Marino.

RB: At first I was thinking a 3 way tussle between Barry Sanders, Eric Dickerson, and Emmit Smith....but I gotta go with Sanders as #1.  The others runnersup

Current TBD generation:  2003 to present........ I think you need to recalculate BUT your premise is sound on generational players......in any major sport

QB.  Brady <---- born in 1977 drafted in 2000     Runnerup:  Peyton <--- born in July 1954, a TRUE boomer!

RB:  Tussle between LaDanian Tomlinson and   Adrian Peterson......other is runnerup.

  •    Runnerup:  Peyton <--- born in July 1954, a TRUE boomer!

Where the hell do you get that Peyton Manning was born in 1954?    Maybe Archie....or maybe Walter Payton.
