Tag, You're It

Per the NFL Calendar site:
Feb. 20 - First day for teams to designate Franchise or Transition players
So....who gets the Franchise Tag. I am going to make a WAG and say that no one on the Browns earns that distinction.
And....as far as I am concerned it IS a distinction. Despite what the yabos out there playing the game say. Getting the franchise tag says: We are at minimum going to pay you among the Top 5 salaries of all players at your position.
So...I don't know why people get pissed about getting tagged. Because they want a long term deal? So...go negotiate one. Because you want to test Free Agency? How much better can most get than Top 5 salary in free agency. Because they are stuck where they are? Most don't care where they are if the money is there.
If by being tagged you were being paid only the average of the Top 15...then I could understand somewhat.....but the AVERAGE of the Top 5? The actually means you will be paid as no less than the Top 2.5 players at your position are being paid.
So...to me...for someone like say Leveon Bell to be angry about it...I think it is dumb. The ONLY thing a guy like that could be worrying about is his EGO! "I don't want the best 2.5 player money, I want the #1 player money!!" OK...and how many more farthings will that get you? Really?
Are you going to go stupid like that one player (may have been basketball) who said he hated it because he could not feed his family on what he would be paid with the millions that he was getting?

Super greed and egos. This was all set up for the stability of the teams and equitable compensation for the players. Oh well.....

Sprewell may have had a couple of dozen bastard children all around the country for which he had to pay child support.

WR Jarvis Landry..Franchise Tagged in Miami ..$16 Million Bones
Its the "non-exclusive" tag:
The tag will hold Landry in place while the Dolphins try to make progress on a long-term deal. Because the team is using its non-exclusive tag, Landry is free to sign an offer sheet with another team. Should the Dolphins choose not to match an offer sheet for Landry, they would be due two first-round draft picks from Landry's new team.
Two first round picks? NO ONE will ever do that.

Especially not the Browns. It would involve the #1 overall.

Not really.
Tagged for one year then you tear your ACL and are never the same again, never get a contract.
Or you get a long term deal with guaranteed money
It isn't greed, it's smart business in a dangerous, short lived profession

In the National Football League (NFL), the franchise tag is a designation a team may apply to a player scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent. The tag binds the player to the team for one year if certain conditions are met. Each team only has one franchise tag (of either the exclusive or non-exclusive forms) and one transition tag per year. The transition tag can only be used if the team does not use a franchise tag.
Perhaps originally designed to reduce player movement to bigger markets, which is often evidenced in the other major pro sports leagues, the NFL revenue sharing and a hard salary cap have placed teams on an even playing field relative to salaries. The tag options allow NFL franchises an extended bargaining period for a player that they feel is key to their success. Usually reserved for players of great skill or of high importance to the team, a franchise tag allows a team's general manager the privilege of strategically retaining valuable free-agent players while seeking talent through the NFL draft or other acquisitions without exceeding the League's salary cap.
The designated franchise player will have his one-year salary guaranteed if he elects to play for the team that designated him with the franchise tag and if he does not negotiate a contract with another team.
