Trading The Number 1 Pick ?

The Browns Board
36 21 1.4k 1
  • Dorsey wouldn't be doing his job if he didn't ascertain the value of #1. It doesn't mean he ultimately trades it.  What if a team offers several #1's? You have to do you due dligence.

  • I just prefer we stay the curse.. Pick our guy. and move forward.. no stupid Sheet.. do it the right way....

  • it isn't that they traded down, it's that they judged talent stupidly.

Nobody would think that gilbert and coleman LOVED the game, had a great work ethic, etc.

They drafted Corey Coleman in the first round, instead of big Michael Thomas out of Ohio State.

How freaking stupid was that? Michael Thomas went midrange in the second round? went to the pro bowl?

Canton Mike and I talked about him all the time. Dorsey and co. will NOT make those stupid appraisals. They will

    be drafting ***football players***.

  • Here's what I've said all along about what Dorsey is going to do:  Having the 1 and 4 in the first round, AND three second rounders is simply too much draft capital for a GM to have, and there's just NO WAY he can help himself. Dorsey is going to prove he's the smartest person in the room, that he can get more picks AND his top rated players, and that he can do what no other Browns GM could do, and that's find the right QB even while trading down. I can just feel it. Dorsey won't be able to help it. Here's the thing....when you have the 1 and 4, you DON'T HAVE TO TRADE DOWN. You can literally take your favorite QB, and then still take your next favorite pick at 4 because qb's are very likely to be taken 2 and 3. Even if Barkley or that Guard are taken, that's fine because Dorsey doesn't take RBs in the first round, and Guard is the one position we actually don't need. So guess what? The guy we want to be available at 4, is probably going to BE THERE! So why even THINK about trading down? Because it's worked so well in the past?

I realize I sound ridiculous and I'm paranoid because of what's happened to us in the past. But I just can't stomach seeing another Julio Jones, Carson Wentz, or whoever else going on to have some terrific career, while we have to suffer through miserable seasons and watching the guys we traded down for turn into complete bozos that contribute nothing. Remember the 2014 draft? Yeah, THAT one. No, not because we drafted Manziel, but because we traded down and picked Justin Gilbert. Oh yeah...Justin freaking Gilbert. The guy that we did basically ZERO background on. The guy our scouts said they didn't want. The guy who was a complete asshat. Who didn't we draft? Khalil Mack. Yes, the guy I wanted. We fans have suffered too much because of the ARROGANCE of these freaking GMs who just HAVE to prove how smart they are. Draft the best player available at the biggest position of need and let the chips fall where they may.

    ^^^^^^^^^^ THIS!!!

Of course, I'll support whatever Dorsey & staff do, but I am 100% on board with jiggins in keeping the #1 & #4 picks. Trading back up with later picks would, IMHO, just sweeten the pot.

    GO BROWNS!!!

    Mike

  • trading the pick would be stupid as Hell

  • I dont think the Browns should trade the picks, but wasn't everyone here so upset they traded last year?

Without that trade, there is no #4 pick for the Browns this year. So the Browns improved their chances of getting top talent by trading last year. Everyone was so mad, well Malik Hooker was there...

Point is, maybe people should see how things work out before getting mad.

  • What about trading up?  Could you imagine if they called NYG and said, all three 2's and a fourth for #2...According to the draft chart that would get them all the way up to #7, but not #2. However, it is unheard of to have three 2nd round selections in the same draft, so that could hold some appeal to the Giants. They could walk away with Barkley, QB of Choice and Fitzpatrick...I think that transforms your team. I also would not be shocked to see them try to move up into the #2 hole by trading the #4, #35, and a late rounder to try and accomplish the same thing and grab QB and Barkely. I believe the Giants are not going to draft a qb. I think they are moving down and it's going to happen before the draft gets started once the Cousins sweepstakes is over. Free agency will help determine a lot of things for this browns team

works both ways, if Watson stays healthy (at a walk thru practice). than what? passing on Wentz may not be the worse.. but passing on #8 with Tenn. for T Jack Conklin may end up worse shortly. We had a RT spot. Conklin could have swung to LT in future. have we named that beaten dead horse yet?😉

Of course it works both ways, which I said in either this thread or another, the point is, there is no reason to whine and moan about it until you know how it turns out.

I'm sure a lot of teams were giddy with a pick they got to drop to them or traded for, to come to see it didn't work out, and vice versa. Same thing. Trade out at Wentz, bad. Trade out and get 4, seems good

  • Jiggins-may as well throw in "hands" Coleman in there as another dumbass trade down move.

I was going to list them all but I felt that vein in my forehead popping out and I didn't want to have an aneurysm.

That being said, I just can't believe Corey Coleman will have a freaking hand injury again, and other than a suspect hamstring, he's been durable. I'm willing to give Coleman a break (no pun intended), and in still interested to see what he can do with a decent QB and other WRs on the field.

    No.

No, no, no.  No more trying to prove we're smarter than everyone else.

We have the chance to pick TWO blue chip players!   TWO!!  Not one...but TWO of the 4 best players in the entire draft.

It's time to cash in the chips.  Quit rolling the friggin' dice!  We've been like sick gamblers that can't stop getting beat.

    AMEN! PREACH!

The only way I'm happy with a trade down is if we sign Kirk Cousins (not happening) or if we trade down from #4 to somewhere still in the top 10. No matter what, take our QB #1, then if a QB desperate team wants to give us a stupid good deal to move up from somewhere in the top 10 to 4, I'd be ok with that. But...BUT....I'd be so much happier just picking where we are! We could come out with our top QB and the top DB in the draft. How do you beat that?

The only way I'd keep the #1 pick for sure is IF the BROWNS want one and only one pick probably Darnold and would not care about  settling for Rosen or Mayfield. Otherwise I'd trade the #1 pick for other R1 and top R2 stud players

They have 8 other picks to trade away to sweeten the deal. You wouldn't take 3 of the top 4 or 5 picks plus still some top R2 picks in this year's loaded draft? NO BRAINER! But this is all make believe right now, right? 😉

Not only does nfl.com not play that link, TexasAg, but Kizer has a lot of work to do before he's "decent" ..

With some help and better play calling maybe not that much. Remember just two years in college and thrown into the fire on a bad NFL team? Better than just another rookie QB savior right now.

  • It's good that the "lines of communication" are open, and our GM is just doing his job by listening to the potential offers and different scenarios. Remember, he's back in the league now, so he's probably enjoying every phone call and every discussion. Now, none of these discussions mean anything until the free agent QB cards are dealt, and only then will the offers be substantive. I will say that it really does seem like we're going to make multiple trades. Some team will either give up the world to to take their favorite QB, or maybe a team will actually want Saquon so badly that they offer us something really stupid. As the days pass, and we start creeping further into March, I feel the familiar anger rising within me. The intense frustration, the hopelessness, and the knowledge that we're likely to trade down, and completely screw ourselves. Again. Still. And forever.

When the NFL Draft begins, I urge everyone to pop in "Draft Day" instead, and pretend that the movie is reality. We have the 1st and 4th picks, and 5 picks in the top 65. It could get REALLY stupid this year, folks. Lord, please let me be wrong.

Working title for a new movie about the trials and tribulation of Browns' Fans:   Panic City-Life on the Edge of Madness🙄😆

    Or maybe:   Superchumps-Fooled Again😛

  • If they trade the #1 pick...

they won't win more than a game this year..

STAND PAT AND TAKE A GOOD FUKKING PLAYER YOU FUKKS!

  • You guys know who the top rated draft candidate is by many analysts? I'll give you a hint, it's NOT Saquon Barkley. It's the Guard from Notre Dame, Quentin Nelson. Now, offensive linemen never go top 2, and Guards never go higher than tackles, but from what I read about Nelson, he's so far away the absolute best, surefire, can't-lose prospect of the draft, that it's not even funny. Apparently his game film is so dominant, that he's being called the best Guard prospect "that people can remember", and easily better than Zach Martin.

The issue with Nelson is his position more than his talent. It's actually similar to Saquon Barkley. Guards don't go early, much as running backs aren't valued like they used to be. That being said, I think we could see the benefit of one of these players being available to us at 4, especially Nelson. We pick our QB at 1, and one of these guys are going to be available at #4 in all likelihood, probably Nelson. Why is that important? Because it would mean the best prospect in the draft would fall right in our lap and it's a position we don't need. Even though other teams know we wouldn't draft Nelson, I can promise you a team will want to trade with us for the right to draft him. How would you guys feel about trading back, but staying in the top 10, and getting another 2nd round pick this year? Don't think someone will trade up for a Guard? You're probably right, but again, Nelson isn't a normal Guard. Like, at all. But still, maybe it's not Nelson they want, and it's a QB? I'm fine moving down from 4 as long as we have our QB at 1.

Maybe we don't trade down for picks, maybe we trade for players? Honey Badger in a trade with Arizona? Jarvis Landry in a move with Miami?

SOMETHING is coming like this, I just pray it's not with the first pick.
