Rumor at NFL Combine: Chiefs could have interest in trading for QB DeShone Kizer

    35

Could the Browns quarterback be shipped off for a draft pick?

If you go back to late-January, there was a small rumor that the Cleveland Browns might end up trading second-year quarterback DeShone Kizerat some point. If the Browns do what people think — sign a veteran and draft a quarterback with one of their first-round selections — then Kizer would be no better than the No. 3 quarterback on the depth chart in 2018.

Instead of that, the Browns might just look to offload him in favor of some compensation in the draft, and that is what The Chiefs Wire is hearing this week at the NFL Combine:

That means one of the following could happen:

    • Straight up, the Browns receive anywhere between a fourth to fifth round pick in exchange for Kizer.
    • Or, the Browns swap picks to gain a little better position. For example, Cleveland has the first pick of the 5th round, but could trade that pick for one of the Chiefs’ 4th round picks.

After the Chiefs trade Alex Smith, they will be down to Pat Mahomes and Tyler Bray as the only quarterbacks on their roster. Bray has been an undrafted free agent with the Chiefs since 2013, but Kansas City might prefer the ability to develop Kizer as their backup quarterback. Kizer was actually at part of the NFL Combine in Indianapolis this week as part of the NFL Talks show on the NFL Network.

I believe that Mahomes will be a bust. Big arm but the NFL is about quick decisions and short passes.

I'm sure Kizer isn't going to be any good, but there is no denying he has talent. Kizer is alot like Allen and Allen is expected to be a top 10 pick.

Bottom line we don't have a QB so we don't need to get rid of the only one with potnetial.

This. He was a 20 year old QB on the worst team in the league with 0 WRs for half of the year. The idea we  should ship him off now for a 5th is idiotic

Sounds like the old Browns Cal. Draft high, trade low. We took Turnstile Erving in the first round, and got a 5th in return.  Though a lot of us would have traded Erving for a 5th of Jack Daniels. Now let's trade a 2nd round qb for another 5th. Nope, Kizer is on an el cheapo rookie deal- just a little over $1 million. He's a sunk cost, keep him around as second or third string if we get say McCarron and draft X quarterback high.

ABSOLUTELY correct. D'uh this team needs an established QB1, QB2 at the very least. .......so ship off Kizer? Right. 😆

From a KC point of view....yes, We'd gladly take him for a 5th round draft pick.  The original poster is incorrect about Tyler Bray being on our roster...he isn't...he is a FA.  Only Mahomes on the roster....

If you believe Mahomes will be a bust you haven't been paying attention.

Back to the issue at hand.  We are looking at having to sign a veteran type to back up....Chase Daniel will be strongly considered...but if offered, why wouldn't we in KC want this....as mention before, Kizer is CHEEP.  and he comes with NFL starting experience....he wasn't that good, but again, not many recieving options on a bad team...he isn't just a nobody..he went in round 2 for a reason..and he is absolutely worth way more to us than some lottery ticket rookie non experience QB we might draft in round 5.  It would be totally worthwhile from a KC point of view to do this....it also seems very "brownsy" of the Browns to want to do this.

Mahomes will be a bust. KC always picks the wrong QB. Len Dawson was drafted by Pittsburgh.

They have success when they take in reject or old SF 49er QBs.

I'm going to say something that we already know (my specialty).  So much of an NFL's player's success largely depends on where they go, what system they're thrust into, and what level of surrounding talent they have to work with.  I mean, what does Deshone Kizer look like on a team like the Chiefs?  How many wins does Kizer have with the Browns if he has guys around him that can run for 1400 yards in a season, consistently catch passes, or God forbid a defense that isn't bottom 3 (or the worst, I forget) in red zone efficiency?  Look at just last season, and tell me how many games Kizer really should've won.  Njoku dropped that 3rd down pass to would've virtually sealed it.  We want our QB's to make clutch plays, and Kizer had a 3rd and 4, game on the line situation...and he makes the perfect play.  At first Njoku is ruled making the catch, and then by some miracle, the camera's have the absolute most PERFECT viewing angle ever, and you see the ball barely squirt out.  How many of those plays went against us?  The ones where you kind of KNEW what happened, but the camera angles weren't available to provide "without a doubt" verification?  But don't you know when it's OUR TURN on a play like that, the camera is RIGHT on it.

How about the Indy game?  Good lord can our defense actually stop somebody from getting into the end zone and force just ONE DARN FG?  No, no they can't...especially early in the season.  Obviously Deshone didn't play "great", but did he play well enough to win?  I think so.  Did our defense force any turnovers?  Did our special teams do anything...special?  I'm too lazy to look, but I doubt it.  How about the Jets' game?  Again, Kizer didn't play "well", but did he do enough to win?

My point is, what does Kizer look like on a team that HAS terrific special teams and a solid defense?  How does he play when he's not constantly down two or three scores?  Does he relax a bit?  Does he avoid some of the "WTF was he thinking?" plays?  It's obviously impossible for anyone to KNOW how he'd turn out, but I could envision a scenario where Kizer "gets it" and becomes a starting QB.  He'd have to be mentally strong, and really work hard to put the pain and anguish of last season behind him.  That is NOT easy.  Kizer gained a BUNCH of experience last year, and while he was absolutely maddening to watch for long stretches, you still saw glimpses of, "Ahhhhh....that looks nice!".  You can't bet the farm on Kizer (duh), but you also can't trade him either.  He's the kind of guy that COULD develop.  Again, would I bet money on it?  No.  Would I trade him?  NO.  We put the work in with the kid, we suffered through all of the bumps, and I'll be danged if we're going to let anyone else potentially reap the benefits for a draft pick.  We HAVE draft picks.  What we don't have are QB's.  The odds are against Kizer, but stranger things have happened.

Yes and getting a lot of bad starting field position, an erratic FG team, strange play calling at times and a whole lot of other variables.

Just scrapping Kizer is the wrong move right now. Maybe the worst thing of all is the BROWNS developing that can't win in this decade reputation around the league, not great for recruiting good FAs to come  here.

.....edit add, a good draft would really help things!

I'm still not done with Kizer. Seems like a good kid with potential. And he doesn't cost much so far. I understand not wanting to be buried behind a veteran and a number one pick however. That deal could be good for him and the Browns depending on what we are able to get for him. Starting receiver or defensive back with plenty of gas left in the tank?

He did not have trouble moving the ball until the redzone and most of that I put on Huey as one of the poorest redzone playcallers ever.

Yes...you could say that in their history that the Chiefs have never drafted a quality QB.

except....that actually is not true:    In 1964 before the Common draft,  in the AFL draft the Chiefs, with the 122d pick of the 16th round of that draft chose Roger Staubach.  But of course he still had his military time to serve...and when he came out he decided to eschew the Chiefs...who at that time had  Dawson in the fold, in favor of the Cowboys who had drafted him in the NFL draft.

Beyond Staubach....the best likely were Livingston or Fuller....a couple of ham and eggers.

Ya know, Emmit Smith was the last big time RB to make a difference. QBs dont need RBs.

Why?  When in reality about 50% of even first round QBs turn out to be busts essentially.    Nothing surprising about a 50% probability happening.

Would be good for Kizer but bad for the Browns.  Not all the losses were on Kizer last season and he played well enough to remain the starter this coming season.  His main issue is trying to do too much, which led to him making dumb decisions.  I can't fault him for that since the Browns usually abandon the run game in the second half.  He is very young and has shown good work ethic so far, I think he will be drastically improved this coming season and would like to see him start over throwing another rookie QB in before the rookie is ready and repeating the cycle of futility.   I would love to see what Haley can do with Kizer and I'm not willing to waste Kizer's potential for a 5th round pick.
