Opportunity Cost - Effective discipline?

The Browns Board

  • What about this, someone on the team keeps the record of the opportunity cost incurred by dumb plays. At the beginning of the prep for the following weeks game the team reviews a chart where every player is ranked in terms of lost opportunity cost. In other words, Player a jumps offside, that is not just 5 yards, but it is 5+ the other team scored. Player B holds on a run back, he gets on the chart for 10 yards, + the loss of a 38 yard return, and immersing the team at their own 8 yard line instead of say, mid fiield.

Tally all the penalties and dumb mistakes, and make these boneheads eat it and own it for everyone, including the fans to see.

If Mayfield was a 104 rating last week, he really was a 15, 802 with all the stupid mistakes.

A fair idea.   I would think that even if the team did not keep that data,  certainly some media person would and make the results known.

  • I would hope they have some type of system like that while watching tape, or just flat out getting on the guys for boneheaded penalties

but some holdings are beyond players, like the screen pass in OT(bad play call) where Baker didn’t have it and held it too long. Resulting in a hold from Harrison to not let him take a hit.

You have to wonder if coaching staffs hold these "hypothetical situation" training sessions.

Examples, Ohio State...... so comitted to blocking a very.short, high percentage FG that they over bite on the block and get suckered o to a fake resulting in an eventual TD.

Or Purdue punting deep on their territory, OSUneeds the ball, and a jackoff ruins it by ru. ing into the kicker.

If you and I, we the fans know this schidt, WTF world do the players and coaches live in that they don't know these things?

But don't we have a huge MOUNTAIN of stats already?

  • It's a good idea...but it would be a lot of work and time.  And some of it would be subjective and / or not deserved.  ie, so and so held but he did it because the guy next to him was supposed to block the player but didn't, so he held to save his QB from getting pummeled. Or a DB slips and the receiver is gonna run by him and be wide open for a TD, so he grabs him.

Something needs to be done about the penalties though.  They're crippling drives.  And those special teams return penalties cost you a TON of yardage (as was mentioned).  One could argue that Myles Garret pushing the player in the back during Shobert's interception return near the end of a game actually COST us the game.

Oh we could have a new super stats department on every team and they could dream up all kinds of other things to watch.....digitize it, make copies each week for every player, coach, GM.....hey why not everyone?

Or just forget it, maybe cut out a few redundant ones already there, eh?  😉

It wouldn't take jack squat effort. You already have the penalties on film. So you have what 10, 15 penalties in a game? That would take a kid 30 minutes to review and compile a report. It would be a hell of a lot more useful than most of the other stats. These boneheads need to be stood up and held accountable for their stupidity.

  • They should get docked 2k per negative penalty right out they're pay checks,,,. That'll shape they're A$$es right up!

  • Hard to lay this all on the players when they are coached and taught to do a lot of these bonehead things.

Lineman are taught to hold.  95% of it doesn't get called, so play the percentages.

Defense is taught that tackling is wrong, that it's 'old school'.  In today's NFL they are coached to create the hardest impact and collision.  Most guys don't even try to use their arms anymore.  They're taught to hit high and hard, even if it leads to helmet first collisions.

When you stiff-arm a guy, grab his face mask and twist it off.  That never gets called.

If I'm teaching guys to skirt the rules, it's kind of hard to dock their pay when they get caught.

  • I know a lot of you have blocked him, and a lot of his posts get deleted.....but I did want to make you all aware of the promise Ghoolie made on another thread, if you did not see it already.

Ghoolie has promised that IF Hue Jackson is fired either before or during the Browns bye week that he will jump into Lake Erie  wearing pantyhose and lipstick.  And its a promise that I think we need to hold him to......and it gives us all motivation to root hard for Hue's dismissal ASAP.  Fair to say?

I have told him that we would not even require him to do so in the winter.  I suggested that he do it while attending one of Westside Steve's gigs  next summer up in Put-In-Bay.  And then (before or after)  he can join Steve in a few songs.

If Hue is not fired, then he is off the hook.

So, what say you all.    It could be a hell of a party in PIB.

  • In my town we use bulls for this kind of people.

First the NFLPA would never go for that, second it would take more than $2k to get their attention the absolute minimum wage for a rookie player is $480,000 in 2018. If a bozo made 1 per per game x 16 games (as a rookie?) that would be $32,000, kind of a parking ticket to them.

The minimum wage for one of us regular working stiffs starts about $8.50/hr or about $17,000+ a year. You would need something like $5k+ to really get  an NFL players' attention. Don't think that would ever happen, interesting idea though but big fines would cause them to sit back, no extra effort, so it might not work afterall.

Each year the NFL minimum salaries increase by $15,000, up to $480,000 for a rookie in 2018. A player’s minimum salary is determined by his years of experience (YOE), ranging from 0 to 10 or more. The chart below shows the minimum (P5) salaries a team can contract a player to based on Years of Experience (credited seasons).

    Yrs. 2017 2018 2019 2020
    0 $465,000 $480,000 $495,000 $510,000
    1 $540,000 $555,000 $570,000 $585,000
    2 $615,000 $630,000 $645,000 $660,000
    3 $690,000 $705,000 $720,000 $735,000
    4-6 $775,000 $790,000 $805,000 $820,000
    7-9 $900,000 $915,000 $930,000 $945,000
    10+ $1,000,000 $1,015,000 $1,030,000 $1,045,000

I think the NFL INC. salary structure and other super perks and other benefits are near a breaking point considering the viewership and other indicators are pointing down and have been for a few years now.

This year the guaranteed minimum rookie salary is $480,000 next year $495,000 in 2020 a nice $510,000 for a guy picked in any round or an UFA not bad for the bottom rung guys.

A rookie this year will make a guaranteed $570,000 minimum next year and $660,000 in 2020. Hard to discipline guys who make this kind of salary.

I guess we wait and see what happens to keep these guys paying attention, only getting cut seems to matter.
