Macron's popularity in France is in the cellar so he took some cheap shots at Trump probably hoping to get a boost. I don't see anything wrong with Trump pressuring our NATO allies to pay their fair share and quit stiffing the United States.

Doubtful if a popularity boost was the motivation. With Trump the motivation is always if you hit him he is going to hit back....Macron asked for it and Trump gave it back to him. Macron was probably counting on it.

If you read my post you will notice I never defended Trump. My point was that Macron wanted this fight to help him politically as he is in the dumpster in the polls. Macron got what he wanted. I think Trump attacks back too many times impulsively and that is not always good.
The other point I was making is that I am glad to see Trump pressuring our NATO allies to pay their share. Prior administrations should have been doing that as well.

I am cool with not funding any other country's defense. That doesn't just include EU countries. I am talking about Israel and anywhere else. We will stick to our policy of helping in the case of attack but we don't need to fit the bill for everything.
