Oh, the Baltomorons- as I used to call them after Schmodell took the Baltimore| Maryland bribe- wanted to keep the "bird" thing, they do have the Orioles. They apparently didn't realize a Raven is a scavenger bird. Saw a bunch of them dining on a roadkill arctic hare up in Alaska....

Eagles, Falcons and Seahawks are already taken. I like this one though- the Baltimore Boobies....

Spoken like a true idiot...We didn't take the Ravens name because we wanted a bird, we took it because this is where Edgar Allen Poe came from and he wrote The Raven.  But you already knew that.  I WILL say this though...the name Browns does still fit your team though...the color of shit.

Well....they did both...they wanted a bird that was endemic to Baltimore...and they selected the Raven from the poem.

And FYI....the Browns name is actually for, essentially:  African-Americans, if you buy one version of how the name originated.

Yeah- and a guy who died in the gutter, IIRC....  The Ravens have enough talent to not wind up there this year- but time will tell....

Actually, it was on a park bench in Baltimore,   and it is highly possible that he was murdered, poisoned, by some accounts I have read.

I in turn will say this though...the derogatory name for your team "Rats" fits your team better than any other teams "derogatory name". Modell shoulda went with it.

I wouldn't be going out on a limb by saying Baltimore has more rats than ravens living in it.

Baltimore's a pretty big place, but here, you're talkin about Baltimore City, and yes, the rats are nasty down there.  Shit, I don't go to the city anymore.  I ain't trying to get my ass shot.  Baltimore's got a pretty bad rep, but it's so bad now, we deserve it.

  • Go in peace...

See you Week 16... at our place... 😉

  • I don’t normally drop in on opposing teams boards, but I had to today. Fucking hilarious. They go from predicting 13-3 to the sky is falling.

I went to one of the Ravens subreddits and read for awhile too. Very entertaining.

As I pointed out- essentially a Raven is a flying Rat....   And not too intelligent I gather. One of my more memorable vacations was staying a couple nights in the Sheldon Cabin on Denali in Alaska. We saw a raven flying around- I had to wonder if there were rocks around there he found tasty....

PS- that trip was as a mountaineer- after hauling a sled load of wood up to the cabin on snowshoes, I decided a climb up to the top of Denali would be too much like work- not to mention the ambient temperature up top is usually well below zero. (temperatures drop 4 degrees for every 1,000' of elevation gain) We were "'only" at the 5,000' level, and it snowed- on June 21st.   A little more mountaineering trivia- it's why people routinely die of hypothermia near the top of Mount Everest-  which is at the same latitude as Tampa Florida.  🙂

Mockingbirds are worse. In NC I had one near my bedroom window.  They’re pretty dumb and think a full moon is daytime and sing. My luck, this one does a great car alarm. Honkhonkhonkhonk at 3 am

Alright stop fn with our state bird down here. They can imitate any other songbird out there. And The Great American Novel incorporates our love for it in the south. If you've never read Harper Lee's novel I highly recommend you do so. Trivia question: Who debuted as Boo Radley in the movie?

BTW it's illegal throughout the US.

And killing the Mexican Aztec Dove in south Texas where I was hunting carries a $250 fine for each in possession.

For some reason Ravens are revered by Italians, and my hometown named the high school athletic teams the "Ravens" because of the large population of Italians in the city at the time. Let's just say, I was less than pleased to see Modell use my HS nickname for his stolen team's new identity.

When I was in high school, my school was in the same league as Ravenna HS....also The Ravens.  So that name was nothing unusual to me.

This ain’t Texas. We don’t have the accursed things here. Our state bird is red, pretty and has its own tune.

Yeah, I remember Barberton kicking the shit out of Ravenna on the regular when they were both in the old Metro League, when I went to Ravenna. I think Barberton had a QB who went to TTUN (Loeffler?) that threw for like 1000 yards one night vs the Ravens.

This is so true...This State also owns hummer birds that will take a eye out at their feeders ..Catbirds that will mess with outdoor dogs or cats...and Really the only few cool Birds we own are the Owl & Eagle.. and on the Coast a Seagull..he just parks beside your fishing boat with the "what kind of scraps ya got" look?

I didn't go to Barberton,   and Barberton was not in the "Old Metro League". (not in my day....nor do I think they were ever in it....they have been in the Suburban League.)  The old Metro league was Ravenna, Kent Roosevelt, Stow, Tallmadge, Springfield, Ellet, Coventry, Norton.

There is now a new Metro League (Portage Trail Conf. Metro Division)...and many of the same schools are now in that.
