Oline analysis: Pats game

  • My eyes told me the line did well.

Chubb was most of the time going north and south through holes.  The vaunted 0 blitz was mostly ineffective.

We had some pre snap penalties two were credited to TE and a WR.

We had a few occasions a blitzer came through and Mayfield turned his back to the pressure. He did a much better job last year of shuffling in the pocket.

pulled right, and his man simply got lower than him and caused them both to fall down, and in the process Bito’s foot

I think it was Van Noy(?) that made this play... he saw the pull coming and attacked it. It was a great read and a better reaction. There's nothing a puller can do in this case... even if he manages to get lower, the result is a logjam in the RB's path.

The flyin' foot fumble was simply a freak result.

Yeah, pretty much how l saw it and Bito did what he had to do based on the play design and circumstances that unfolded during it. The 2 guys basically took each others’ legs out and the ball getting kicked was just a freak thing.

  • As expected, McCray was the absolute worst offensive lineman on the field, and it wasn't even close.  You can use whatever metric you want to, be it PFF or the good old fashioned "eye test", but HOLE-LEEEEE shit he was bad.  Let me give you a little glimpse into his badness (courtesy of Locked on Browns Podcast).

Greg Robinson is known as a colossal bust in the NFL world, and this is no surprise.  We were very excited to get some decent service out of him last year, and the HOPE was that he’d build on that “decent season” and maybe become more consistent and reduce his penalties.  Obviously, that hasn’t happened, and he’s been in the doghouse with the coaches ever since he kicked a guy in the head week 1 and got ejected.  I’m telling you, the amount of stupid things our players do AND the amount of “wtf just happened” plays that go against us are staggering.

    Ok, back on topic.

According to PFF, Justin McCray graded out worse than ANY GAME ever played by Greg Robinson.  I would like you to read that part again.  Against the best defense in the history of the free world, we decided to play Justin McCray instead of our embattled LT.  Did it go well?  No…no it didn’t.

The ONLY reason I can even THINK we benched Greg Robinson is because he’s part of a package of players we’re trading for another LT, and we couldn’t risk him getting hurt.  That’s the only reason that could make sense.  If we wanted to just “see what happens” with an inexperienced LT instead of our starter?  Well, our coach won’t make it through the year because that’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard of, and I’ve been witness to some massive football dumbness.

Valid points for sure. I actually didn’t realize McCray graded out so badly. He looked alright for a quarter to me. The main issue l saw from him was bumping into and scraping past his own teammates, which l figure will get ironed out with reps and cohesion.

I suppose my line of thinking with Robinson is l don’t see him as the LT of the future with us, and time’s a wasting to find that guy. So if not him then who? Maybe not McCray either. It’s pretty evident there are element of a work in progress for this team, and using the remainder of 2019 to sort out those kinks isn’t a bad idea if it helps create a better future foundation.

Plenty of value to not doing that too though, foremost is the higher potential to get Baker hurt.

Check out this article that breaks down McCray's play much better than I could.  It's even worse than you think  ?

    JT  come back!!

  • Robinson held a dude for no reason to set the Browns back to 1st and 20 against Seattle(last drive of game). He also kicked a guy in the face like an idiot. Costed this team majorly on 2 separate occasions. McCray filled in and didn’t commit boneheaded penalties.

Yeah, I totally get that, and I honestly think the last penalty was the straw that broke the camel's back.  That holding call could have totally been overlooked, but Greg has the reputation for holding, so he's going to get nailed more often than not.  The bigger issue is your QB getting hurt.  So yeah, Greg will kill you with penalties that come at the WORST time, but he's also less likely to get your QB killed, so there's that too.

The hold had no impact on the play, and there was no denying he grabbed. Felt like he was throwing the game.

I'm thinking the job is Kendall Lamm's for the taking. He just got healthy this week and seems to fit the bill. He started 13 games with the Texans last year.

That's a great point about Lamm, I forgot that he's finally healthy.  That poor bastard finally gets his chance to play and gets rolled up on almost immediately.  I was scared that it was an ACL blowout because that's exactly what it looked like, so in the grand scheme of things he somehow got lucky.  Very interested to see what he can do because there's no way you can trot out McCray after that performance.  It was just too terrible.

No way you can trot out the guy who lost his job to McCray either. Its Lamm or bust at this point.
