New NFL CBA

The Browns Board
29 11 457
  • Great list of issues! I would add to the first item that set punishments be set for different infractions (like set fines for traffic offenses). That way the Patiots and Browns would be treated equally.

For item G. I'd love for the players to say stuff it with the overseas games and be willing to forgo the money.

  • The current CBA expires at the end of the 2020 season....next year.    Some issues I think will be in play:

    A.  A new disciplinary procedure needs to be instituted.  Right now, one guy,  (Troy Vincent currently)  metes out all the fines, suspensions, etc.  And while there is an appeal...that goes just to the Commissioner, Goodell.   He occasionally revises punishment...but only occasionally and not by much.   In the past this has caused a whole can of worms.   I personally think that the NFL should have a disciplinary panel....made of up  player reps   (if not current ones because they are kinda busy, but maybe recently retired guys),  management reps,  and  attorneys/magistrates...legal officials.   Any appeals should go to like a 3 judge panel  (just like regular court appeals do)...who, yes, should be like retired judges.  The commissioners office should stay out of it completely IMO.

    B. Dope.   Dope...Marijuana testing will be eliminated.  The only kind of discipline that should be applied would be if someone like got caught driving under the influence (that includes alcohol, MJ, other street drugs, or prescription drugs.    Right how, I guess, maybe, they should perhaps still test for like cocaine, meth, etc. ..more to get people help than to discipline them.

    C.  The Franchise Tag....will be an issue for discussion.  Players apparently hate it.  Not sure why when under it they become at least one of the top 5 paid players at their positions.

    D.  I know the whole  18 game season/reduced preseason issue will be on board.  I really do not like the idea of an 18 game season...but I really hate the idea of continuing with the current preseason format.

    E. Healthcare.   For current and retired players.  Always a concern.   And include side health issues...like CTE testing etc.

    F. Money.....ALWAYS money.  How do the players and owners divide up the huge revenues they receive.

Can you all think of anything else?

You mention recreational types of drug testing that I’m fine with. But what about PEDs?  How far do you think they take the testing for steroid types of drugs? Or amphetamines?  They seem to put more emphasis on drugs that would decrease performance ( pot alcohol)  rather than the ones that artificially increase it. Of course then again, watching the drunks play in the 60s and 70s was kinda fun.

What about practice? I say bring it back. Lack of hurts both parity and play.

  • G. International Games. How many games will be played internationally and what amount of Home games should count towards that number or settling on a format that allows both teams to play their away games in another country.

I have a hunch there will be a proposal to go to a 17 game season. The 17th game will be an International one, say England, Mexico City, &  Canadian cities for starters.

If agreed upon, then ALL teams have to partake, and have a BYE the following week.

I don't like it either, but commie Goodell gets his way (and the other commies like Kraft, Jones, Kroenke, and Kahn). Then in their Czar-like ways, they can force the Packers to go to London for the first time.

In return, the preseason gets reduced to 3 games. The players don't necessarily "win," because they still have 20 games. But the stars seem to be sitting in at least two anyway.

Well...I think at this point,  only MJ would be the drug involved in non testing.

Could happen.  The other thing I have heard is that the 17th game would be against a "permanent" rival in the other conference.  Like Jets v. Giants,  Ravens v. Redskins,  Tampa v. Miami,  Chargers vs. Rams. Dallas v. Houston.....Detroit vs. Cleveland?   North Carolina vs. Tennessee?   Things on that order.

This is one l would like to see addressed. If l understand correctly, any MLB player who plays in a single MLB game becomes eligible for MLB’s excellent health care coverage for life. With as rough a sport as football is, and with all the dough the NFL is rolling in, l don’t see why the NFL can’t do something comparable.

  • If they do the 17th game, and they adopt this "permanent rival" concept.....there are quite a number that  would seem fairly natural:

New York Jets vs. New York Giants.  Same stadium.

Baltimore Ravens vs. Washington Redskins ....stadium's only about 30 miles apart

Carolina vs. Tennessee.  Adjoining states which have a big "hillbilly rivalry" as it is.

Tampa Bay vs. Miami.   Cross state rivalry.

Jacksonville vs. Atlanta.   Mimic the Fla/Georgia rivalry and Just call it the World's Second Biggest Cocktail Party...or some such.

Cleveland vs. Detroit.  Once the biggest NFL rivalry.  Detroit actually closer to Cleveland than either Pitt or Cincy. Already do the GLC

    Dallas vs. Houston   Yeehaw

LA Chargers vs. LA Rams.  Will be playing on the same field.

Philadelphia vs. Pittsburgh. Another cross state rivalry.

San Francisco vs.  Oakland/Las Vegas. Rivalry could still be strong despite move of Raiders

Denver vs. Arizona.   Call it the Four Corners rivalry

    Chicago vs. Indianapolis    I-65 rivalry.

.....That accounts for 24 of the 32 NFL teams.

The other 8 teams do not seem to have a natural rival in the other conference:

    Cincinnati.....New Orleans....Green Bay....Minnesota....Seattle....Kansas City.....Buffalo.....New Engand.

Of these, the only one that could logically connect is  Kansas City vs. Minn.  And here is some weird reasoning:   at one time the Twin Cities area was considered the "territory" of the Kansas City mob.  So, why not?

How about a "Northern Corners Rivalry" between  New England, the furthest Northeast NFL City vs. Seattle the furthest northwest NFL city.

Or a Riverboat Rivalry...between  Cincinnati and New Orleans?

And a "Frozen Tundra Rivalry between Buffalo and Green Bay (and always play it in December!!)

    Sound good?

Sure it would work. Just because teams move doesn’t mean there couldn’t be a readjustment of the rivalries. All they have to do is write up a new schedule.

Yes, for the most part. Definitely hard to conjure up rivalries, as they tend to happen over time. The NFL tried to force feed a Browns-Ratbirds rivalry, for instance.

Funny you mention the Lions-Browns rivalry. My dad told me growing up that I wasn't allowed to root for the NYG, Eagles,  or Lions. Being the good boy I was, I didn't and never will.

I passed that on to my three sons, who are grown and relocated. They also know not to ever root for Balt, Pitt, Cincy, Tenn (nee Oilers), Den, and the entire NFC East.

Yeah, I only have a problem with about 27 NFL teams lol.

    GO BROWNS

  • Yeah, I only have a problem with about 27 NFL teams lol.

Can we go for  31 teams?  Maybe.

But, now that you mention it.....I am thinking about which teams I may not have a problem...per se, as long as the Browns are not playing them.  Most of these would be teams who have never won a title...or where it has been many, many years.  So here is a partial list:

The Lions.  This team is actually the team that has been in and stayed in its city the longest since their last title.

The Bills.   They have waited only 1 year less than the Browns. 1965 since their last title.

So....as far as the above....it is the Curse of Lake Erie......Buffalo on the east, Cleveland in the center and Detroit in the west of the lake....

Minnesota Vikings.  No titles since franchise began in 1960.

    A few others:

The Chargers.   I would have even more sympatico with them if they had not move to LA.  As is, they have gone since 1963.

The Cards.  This franchise has actually gone the longest.   Since 1947.  And, I mean....some team in major league sports has to exist to keep the Cleveland Indians now from being the team that has gone the longest since winning a title.  But the Cards are a carpetbagger team....going from Chicago to St. Louis to AZ

The Titans.   Similar to the Cards....no titles since 1961 as the Houston Oilers....but there move from Houston gives me a fuckem attitude toward them.

Jacksonville Jaguars.   They don't really offend me as an entity....but they are a young team....let them wait.

Jets, and Dolphins.  These two are in a similar boat......long time since last title....1968 and 1973 respectively.  They don't seem too smug.....like the Pats in their division (but, I guess if they were winning they too could act smug)

The Chiefs.  I see KC and Cleveland as similar type cities.   Chiefs have not won since 1969.

Falcons.  Not won since they have been in the league in the mid 60s.  I have no sympathy though for fucking up royally the massive lead they had in the SB vs. Pats.  What chokers.

    Panthers.  Like the Jags.

Finally....The Green Bay Packers.    Yes, they have won recently...and have won more titles than any single other franchise.  But the reason they are OK by me is that they are the only community owned franchise...not beset by the whims of a single greedy owner.   How socialistic!!😆

  • G. International Games. How many games will be played internationally and what amount of Home games should count towards that number or settling on a format that allows both teams to play their away games in another country.

Yeah- this International stuff is getting out of hand. Pretty sure every team hates it when their number comes up to play in London. OTOH, I don't have a problem with regular season games in Mexico or Canada. FYI, when the Browns got tabbed to be the home team in London, the season ticket holders didn't get charged for it- and we were offered special travel packages if we wanted to make the trip...... They were mighty pricey though, in the $4,000- $5,000 range.
