10:34:44 am C.J. Mosley, who has a small shot at a starting DE spot with the Browns, has spent some time disrupting the running game today in the backfield.

10:18:44 am The Browns are working mostly on their running game today.

10:18:18 am Browns LB Alex Hall stayed with speedy RB Jerome Harrison on a deep sideline route in game simulation, but a pinpooint Derek Anderson pass resulted in a completion. Hall is trying to prove he can do more than rush the passer.

10:17:17 am The Browns keep working with LB Kamerion Wimbley to maximize his pass rushing potential. He made a spin move on backup OL George Foster to gain a clear path to the quiarterback in blocking drills.

10:04:22 am Browns Pro Bowl NT Shaun Rogers schooled rookie C Alex Mack in Sunday's scrimmage and continued to do so today. He shed Mack with an inside move and broke free.

10:02:17 am Browns OL Ryan Tucker, who is battling Floyd Womack and others for a starting job, sealed off the LDE in 7-on-7 drills and allowed) James Davis bolt through the hole.

10:00:45 am Free agent rookiem WR Jordan Norwood made the most spectacular catch of 1-on-1 drills, tightroping the sideline to snag one. The strong performance by WR Lance Leggett in Sunday's scrimmage didn't help Norwood's bid for a roster spot.

9:47:10 am CB Hank Poteat, who is in the mix for playing time, lost WR Mike Furrey in 1-on-1 drills for a long gain.

9:46:03 am CB Rod Hood provided blanket coverage and picked off a pass against WR Braylon Edwards in 1-1 drills. Hood is battling incumbent Brandon McDonald for a starting spot.

9:42:33 am Several Browns slipped on the turf still wet from the weekend downpour during 1-1 drills to open practice.

9:14:25 am Browns RB Charles Ali has returned to camp after missing time with an undisclosed injury. He has fallen behind in his bid for a roster spot.

9:07:42 am David Patten is on the stationery bike to open today's practice. Patten and Mike Furrey provide a veteran presence to a young Browns WR corps.

That's very good to hear. Mosley was mostly a passing downs guy in New York, forming a run/pass rotation with Kenyon Coleman. But at 26, he could be growing into an every down player: maybe not a starter this year, but a solid addition to our d-line depth.

    CBS RapidReports:

11:06:53 am Browns WR Braylon Edwards hasn't dropped anything all camp. He just made a circus catch in game simulation to close today's session. He led the NFL in drops a year ago.

10:50:45 am Browns rookie WR Mohamed Massaquoi has been fairly sure-handed, but he just dropped a catchable low ball in game simulation. He is in the mix for playing time at that position.

10:46:11 am Browns DE Kenyon Coleman might have an edge in the battle for a starting position, but he just encroached and is now running a "punishment lap."

10:36:21 am A botched reverse has resulted in Browns WRs Brian Robiskie and Mike Furrey running "punishment laps." No sweat - both should get plenty of playing time this year.

10:35:23 am Second-year WR Paul Hubbard has done a Jekyll-Hyde impression throughout Browns camp. He's been either very good or very bad in terms of holding on to the ball.

10:34:44 am C.J. Mosley, who has a small shot at a starting DE spot with the Browns, has spent some time disrupting the running game today in the backfield.

10:18:44 am The Browns are working mostly on their running game today.

Maybe, maybe not. We are talking about practice here. There are guys like Peyton and Big Gay Ben who by reports have been up and down through their camps so far.

*really, someone decided to change my post to call Big Gay Ben "Big Gay Ben", and I can't change it back... seriously....*

HOT SCOOPS: Live At Camp Wednesday Afternoon

Cleveland Browns Training Camp Report: Tuesday 8/11 8:45 AM Practice

Upon entering the Cleveland Browns Training Facility this morning there was one word that stood out instantly because it was painted on the practice field and that word was "focus."

Unfortunately, the Browns did not focus at times this morning due to many false starts on both offense and defense during 11-on-11 scrimmages.

Towards the end of practice, the false starts seemed to happen every few minutes and the coaches let those players know about it. Fans could hear the coaches screaming at the players who jumped the snap.

Players that jumped too soon and had to run laps were: DL Ahtyba Rubin, WR Braylon Edwards, RB James Davis, DL Kenyon Coleman, WR Brian Robiskie and LB Kamerion Wimbley.

First up are the 8-on-8 drills where the quarterback lined up with his receivers and a running back versus the defensive backs and linebackers. No offensive or defensive lines were present.

Quinn was 4/5 for 45 yards

Anderson was 2/5 for 58 yards and one touchdown

Drill notes: Quinn threaded the needle on a pass to tight end Steve Heiden who was between two defenders and caught the pass for 15 yards.

Anderson's first pass in the drill was a 40 yard touchdown bomb to Edwards in the endzone.

Josh Cribbs had two catches for 23 yards.

Next, the team went into a 11-on-11 scrimmage from the offenses' own 25 yard line.

Quinn was 4/5 for 47 yards

Anderson was 3/3 for 42 yards

Drill notes: Quinn avoided a heavy pass rush on one drop back and found Edwards for about 20 yards.

Anderson had a perfect lob to Jerome Harrison for about 23 yards.

Jamal Lewis, Harrison, and James Davis all got about three to four carries each, with Lewis running for 12 yards, Harrison had 10 yards running and Davis ran for 20 yards.

Anderson also had to run the ball a couple of yards on a broken play and threw a pass to Paul Hubbard that was tipped at the line, but Hubbard still came down with it for about 10 yards.

There was an attempted double reverse when Quinn was in and he handed it off to Robiskie, who then handed it to Mike Furrey, but the ball hit the ground and Robaire Smith picked up the fumble and ran it for a score. Both Robiskie and Furrey ran a lap for the bad exchange.

Halfway through this scrimmage, the music started blaring out of the speakers in the endzone and both Quinn and Anderson did not seem to be effected by it.

After a quick break, the team reassembled and began another set of 11-on-11.

Quinn was 2/3 for 12 yards

Anderson was 5/7 for 51 yards

Drill notes: Both LBs Kamerion Wimbley and Eric Barton had good pressure on two plays in a row during Quinn's series.

CB Coye Francies had solid man-to-man coverage on Cribbs for a play that came up incomplete.

Harrison ran the ball will with three carries for 29 yards.

Mohamed Massaquoi, Robert Royal, Martin Rucker and Furrey all contributed with catches.

The final 11-on-11 drill of the practice did not feature Quinn or Anderson, but backups Brett Ratliff and Richard Bartell, who were leading the offense in a two-minute drill from their own 25 yard line.

Bartell did not fair well in this drill because after an incomplete that was thrown behind the receiver, Bartell followed that up by tossing a pick right into CB Rod Hood's chest.

Ratliff did have a solid showing by leading his team down the field for a scoring touchdown drive with time still remaining on the clock. He hit passes to Cribbs for 10 yards, Edwards for 16 yards and followed that up with a toss to Edwards on a quick slant route that Edwards took to the endzone for a 45 yard score.

Very impressive showing for Ratliff, and he looks very comfortable behind center and he made good defensive reads to get the score.

A side note, both Quinn and Anderson have not been able to lead a scoring touchdown drive in the two-minute drills so far in camp.

A pretty good showing at camp this morning, with the exception of all the false starts.

Both Edwards and Cribbs were catching everything that came their way and both were able to break out of coverages an into the open field all morning.

This may very well be the opening day starting receivers especially of Cribbs keeps getting open in his route as he has been doing over the last several practices.

The comfort level of the offense does look to be growing, now that they have been playing together for over a week.

  • Thanks for the updates!! That was a really good article. Sounds like it was a decent day for both quarterbacks. Personally I'm still in shock that Anderson executed a "lob pass."

Haha I'm still in shock jamal averaged more than 2 yards per carry. That's pretty crazy about cribbs possibly starting at reciever though I would think they would pot massoquoi and furrey ahead of him

  • @shepwrite said:

Ratliff is making somebody expendable if a team comes with the right offer... which looks unlikely at this point. I think if Jackson had gone down for real it might have gotten interesting. It would take an injury to a team with only one real quarterback with some age on him, like Carolina or Seattle.

Man, the WR situation is highly competitive. Cribbs is forcing his way into the Edwards-M2-Furrey-Robiskie group and Leggett is making a big move, too. I think the team has to keep only one from Furrey and Patten because there are too many interesting young guys in camp. Even so, Leggett, Hubbard, and Norwood are fighting for that developmental spot.

Alot of WR's are getting hurt around the league, no time like the present to start stockpiling picks. QB's, WR's gotta be some value somewhere outside of Cle.

You gotta feel like were able to withstand some injuries this year, unlike the past few years were if one player goes down the team followed.

Neither QB ever woulda got shipped to the team the Browns were opening the season against, especially after training camp started.

Mangini said he was a bit disappinted with the morning practice and was looking for the team to pick it up in the afternoon. He didn't sound like a happy camper. Very sloppy, was his take.
